Many battles, wars, and competitions, such as athletic events, have an underdog and a favored side. The underdog is typically known for losing, but that is not always the outcome. In the Revolutionary War, America were the underdogs against a well-trained, British army with more soldiers and equipment. Although they were the underdogs, they never backed down, and ended up earning our country’s independence. Another great example of the underdogs coming out on top is during sports, or athletic competitions. The polls, rankings of colleges, are constantly changing, because the top ranked teams are defeated by the unexpected victors. This scenario is demonstrated in all sports, whether they are professional or amateur, just like James Baldwin …show more content…
They fought until they were all dead, because if they survived and were not triumphant, they would not have anything left anyway. At first they were overcome with fear of their opponents, but throughout the story they gained confidence, and decided to fight for their home or die trying. The significance of the soldiers deciding to fight without fear, but with purpose and determination made the outcome of the war a lot closer. Just a little hope can make a big difference in a competition, like James Baldwin wrote in his true inspiring short story, “The Brave Three Hundred.” James Baldwin told the story of a small Spartan army led by Leonidas, who stood up against a much larger Persian army to defend its territory and nearly were victorious (Baldwin). If the Spartans would have continued to fear the large, highly trained Persian army, they would have been demolished, and not even have stood a chance at defending …show more content…
The team coming back to win at the last second or minute never gives up, which is why they are successful. A great example of someone pursuing a dream that may have seemed impossible at one time was the story of Michael Jordan, a famous basketball player. He did not play very much when he was younger, but he always practiced and never gave up. Through his effort and determination, like the effort and determination James Baldwin described of the Spartan, he achieved his dream, and become one of the best basketball players in history. Obviously, if everyone played and fought like the Spartans, than not all of them would win. However, it would make certain games a lot closer, and give every team a chance at
Sparta was once one of the most important Greek city-states throughout Greece, famous for their military lifestyle. When you think of a Spartan warrior, you vision a man with huge muscles, red cloaks, long hair, and sharp swords. Spartan warriors were the best and feared fighters in Greece, they spend their whole lives learning new fighting techniques and serving their home, Sparta. At around six or seven years old, young boys would be taken from their homes to be trained as Spartan warriors.
In the documentary “Undefeated” by T.J. Martin and Daniel Lindsay, an underprivileged black high school football team tries to break the streak of never having won a playoff game as long as the school has been around. Through all of the struggles that these kids face, they learn to come together with the help of their football coach. While the film was nominated for an Oscar, there are two completely different views on whether the film was about overcoming difficulties, considering the situation or about made up miracles that are only seen in fictional movies. In both reviews of the documentary, the authors talk about both the characters and the directors and how well they delivered their message.
We showed our strength, the only reason we lost the battle was because we were outnumbered one to twenty five
General Andrew Jackson and his army emerged victorious in this battle in astronomical numbers. “The British lost 700 men, and 2,000 more were wounded or taken prisoner; just 13 Americans died, and only 58 suffered wounds” (Chapter 7, pp. 230). This was a victory in the simplest of terms if I ever saw one. General Jackson re-ignited America’s pride that was depressed due to economic, political, and
Because the CFP advancement selections are not solely determined by computers, choosing teams to advance by only looking at the teams’ performance statistics is impossible. Therefore, schools with a “big-name” had much more leeway and easier entry into the playoffs because of their popularity and pedigree, which led to the CFP making excuses as to why other teams did not advance to the playoffs. This also occurred because large companies that supported “big-name” colleges put more pressure on the CFP to present these teams on a higher stage. In summary, “big-name” schools were treated better than schools with less pedigree by the College Football Playoff committee because of their status and public support, which gave bigger schools a better chance of advancing to the CFPs. As stated in the literature review, many large corporations and organizations support “big-name” schools and the CFP committee, paving an even smoother pathway for these schools to go to the playoffs.
It would give teams from every conference the opportunity to become a champion. It would allow a team to recover f coaches have time to watch all of the games while also preparing their teams each week. A playoff system, used by most other sports, would eliminate the controversy.last con is that The BCS rewards undefeated BCS teams, so schools sometimes try to schedule games against weaker opponents to protect their records. A rom a slow start, come together over the course of the season and make a run for the championship. It would build great national excitement over the

This could increase both the excitement for the fans as well as the income associated with the playoffs. Additionally, it would remove the misconception that only Power 5 teams deserve to participate in the playoffs for a chance to bring home the title. The power 5 teams include all
In the novel The Things They Carried, Tim O’Brien expresses to the reader why the men went to the war and continued to fight it. In the first chapter, “The Things They Carried,” O’Brien states “It was not courage, exactly; the object was not valor. Rather they were too frightened to be cowards.” The soldiers went to war not because they were courageous and ready to fight, but because they felt the need to go. They were afraid and coped with their lack of courage by telling stories (to themselves or aloud) and applied humor to the situations they encountered.
“I, George Washington, the general of the Continental army, is here to tell you to fight on, evan when things seem bad, it’s at the worst times when things brighten up.” This is George Washington talking inspiration into his soldiers to keep fighting the good fight because he says, “Give up a cause to lose”. In December 25, 1776, George Washington sent some troops and himself to go capture Fort Trenton, but the trick is, it was christmas and everyone at Trenton was asleep. In the end of the “Battle” Washington won without loss. Now because the battle of Trenton was such an amazing win for the Americans it also made people “try harder”.
Also, the soldiers were miserable but, they had “Spirit of Alacrity” which is cheerful willingness (Doc. C). Of course there were tough time, it’s winter! The soldiers had to suffer with not a lot of supplies but the soldiers knew that soon enough, it was all going to be over. After winter come spring and summer where there are good conditions. So if I stay positive just like the others, then I know not to quit and continue fighting for
In Ancient Greece, Sparta, had laws that when you were born you were to be examined for any defects. If you had any you were to be thrown down in a valley to die, and if you were the first born male of your family you were put in a military camp to be trained for further uses. This took away their human rights on living free if you are a man, and if you are a woman you were to stay in the town and be a “house-wife.” The Spartan government wanted to make the city a stronger unit by taking away job choices. The Spartan government was a great government because, they trained young boys to be warriors, their population couldn’t have any flaws, and the people didn’t have a choice in job.
Webb’s “Depth of Knowledge” Levels Homework #18: DOK Level 1 – Question: Who were the Spartans? The Spartans were basically the soldiers of the Ancient Greek city-state, Sparta. The Spartans devoted all their time to the military, partaking in military training, hunting and war battles. They lived a frugal lifestyle and without any luxuries. They were taught to be brave and courageous at a very young age, soon evolving into soldiers for the military.
Racism is a part of American history that can never be forgotten; a dark past that shows the constant mistreatment of African-Americans. Although African-Americans were freed from slavery in the 1860’s, discrimination continues to be seen today. Racism is defined as prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one 's own race is superior. The white supremacy woven into mainstream American culture led to the continued widespread exclusion of African-Americans.
