The Progressive Era was a period of major causes and various movements, where reformers and different advocates from different backgrounds and with very different agendas mind sets followed their goals for a better America. The Progressive Movement came about on a local and state level around the 1890’s. The Progressive movement became a force on the local level around the 1890’s because of movements like The Social Settlement Movement. The City Governments caused some of the first successes for Progressive reformers. They Exposed city officials, and replaced some of their leaders. Some people who became involved with all of this are Upton Sinclair, Frank Lloyd Wright, Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. They were known as Muckrakers.
The Progressive Era was a period of immense change during the turn of the nineteenth century. Progressives were a diverse group of politicians and citizens who desired a change in the economic, social, and political atmosphere of the time. Their activism and reform come under question from historians because of their lack of unity, and thus the validity and effectiveness of the movement is challenged. However, the Progressives were successful to a certain extent- they were successful in influencing legislation for general improvements, despite their lack of homogeneity.

Many groups were an important part of the process that helped this transformation occur. New concepts of government and changes were made based on those notions. They believed that the worlds problems that society faced "(poverty, violence, greed, racism, class warfare)" could be prevented by having safe environments to live in, having a great education, and an efficient place to work. The "Progressives" usually lived in the big cities.
The Progressive Age was a period of social activism and political innovation during which compelling public issues forced profound changes in the role of government and presidential leadership. Progressives shared the assumption that government must take a more active role in addressing the problems created by rapid urban and industrial growth. They thought that the government could be a tool for change. Progressives established the principle that governments had a responsibility to ensure that Americans were protected from abuse by powerful businesses and corrupt politicians.
The Progressive Era The Progressive Era was a time when America had begun a thirst for change in its government as well as its people. Politicians wanted a more modern government that searched to answer the social problems that were arising with the many new and old immigrants that no resided in the U.S. On the other hand, workers demanded more rights in the workplace and better-working conditions. Women wanted to look for new activities outside the home because a life inside a home was becoming dull to them. Progressives during this era were striving for progress in their government and were very diverse in how they obtained this change.

The progressive movement encompassed a variety of different ideas and activities of reformist pressure groups, that called for political reforms attacking bribery and corruption. Progressive reformers were sought to eliminate social reform issues which during that time was poor working conditions, female suffrage, and child labor. It is because of the progressive era that the state government reforms have helped the public have more direct control over government. In order for the public to have more direct democracy they addressed the social problem and inequality through secret ballots, initiative and referendum power, recall, and direct primary. Stemming from some of the Populist party’s ideas and following the turbulent times of the Reconstruction Era and Gilded Age, the Progressive movement arose in the 1890s in the United States as a means of utilizing the federal government to achieve national development. This was a huge step forward for the common man, as the industrialization of the nation and rise of big businesses, which exploded around the 1860s, left him robbed and mistreated. The Progressive Era was a period of economic, political, and social reform in the United States. The era began in the 1890 's, after the severe depression of the Panic of 1893 was coming to a close, and ended when the United States entered World War I in 1917. The main objectives of the movement were eliminating problems caused by urbanization, immigration, industrialization, and corruption in government. At the end of the Progressive Era in 1917, the movement had successfully taken strides in expanding democracy and regulating the economy. The Progressive Era impacted the development of politics by requiring the government to step in and make changes, ultimately resulting in a stronger and more powerful direct democracy.
From 1896 to 1924, America went through a period known as progressivism in which people of all walks of life banded together to oppose conservatism and reform society. Progressives generally believed that government is necessary for change, however; it had to more significantly embody the ideals of democracy. Some of the specific changes that progressives wanted were regulating railroads, a direct election of senators, graduated income tax, limited immigration and eight-hour workdays. By supporting these changes, the progressives hoped to promote and expand democracy and thus give the people more power.

The early 1900s were a time of widespread social and political change in America. During this time, many Americans adopted new, more modern ideas about labor, cultural diversity and city life. Some of these Progressive ideas were brought about by the need for reform in the workplace due to the grown of large companies and rapid industrialization. Not everyone supported the ideas of the Progressive Movement, however. Anti-Progressives, especially in the South, preferred traditional, rural lifestyles, and a slower, simpler way of living.
