Micro Level Analysis Target & Dimensions As aforementioned, Lia Lee’s father, Nao Kao Lee, and his perception of Lia’s primary doctor, Dr. Neil Ernst, will be analyzed using the social constructionist perspective. Specifically, individuals and couples are the targets for analysis. Looking at these interactions through a micro lens includes examining how and why the interactions between Nao Kao and Neil happened. Adding in the social constructionist perspective to the micro level, social workers utilizing this perspective would investigate how Nao Kao constructed his individual perception of reality based on his experiences with Neil. Furthermore, social workers would question the roles played by context and culture in each situation. …show more content…
According to social constructionist theories, their exchanges shaped both their individual realities and their future interactions; specifically, Nao Kao eventually mistrusted and potentially resented Neil as well as the whole American medical system. This mistrust began developing when Nao Kao’s daughter Lia started seizing at a very early age. Nao Kao spent many nights in the hospital with Lia while doctors, including pediatrician Neil Ernst, treated her, sometimes even restraining her to properly administer her medication. Nao Kao thought the doctors and nurses restraining Lia were sadistic, with his suspicions further intensified when he arrived at the hospital one morning to find Lia physically injured as a result of falling out of her crib (Fadiman, 1997, p. 43). This mark on his daughter was an obvious sign of neglect to Nao Kao, while Neil and his nurses saw it as an accident. Although Nao Kao was not directly interacting with Neil in these first few nights, Nao Kao’s perceptions commenced about the American medical system, which Neil would later come to represent. Soon after Lia’s first few hospitalizations, Dr. Neil Ernst prescribed Lia medication to control her seizures, but Nao Kao refused to provide his daughter with the whole dosage, claiming to Neil that it made her sicker (Fadiman, 1997, p. 50). When noncompliance eventually became an issue of child safety, Nao Kao blamed Neil for Lia’s prolonged stay in foster care, going so far as to threaten suicide if he did not get his daughter back (Fadiman, 1997, pp. 83, 89). This disagreement between Neil and Nao Kao echoed throughout Fadiman’s book and presented one of the strongest indicators of constructed reality built by an individual’s perceptions; Neil viewed Nao Kao’s medical noncompliance as harmful to Lia, but Nao Kao credited Lia’s sickness and distress to Neil’s medical procedures
Unpolished Gem is a thought provoking tale that explores the journey of Alice Pung from girl to woman. The memoir fluidly transitions between a series of themes and ideas, but through these a constant concept is explored; the cultural divide. Alice’s culture and background are the foundation of every decision she makes and thus, throughout the entire autobiography, the reader observes the implications of this, and often, the divide this creates. The reader perceives the social division Alice’s culture generates and the impact this has on relationships in and out of the home, and also in Alice’s ability to assimilate. Cultural divide is also apparent to the reader when comparing the expectations of Alice’s family to those of her classmates.

The novel, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, written by Jamie Ford, displays how a boy lived when he was younger in 1942 and when he was older in 1986. The character goes back and forth from past to present showing the struggles he overcame when he was a boy to the present time. The hardships this character went through in his younger years often led him to reflect on the past and try not to make similar mistakes that he or others around him made. Within Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, the author presents Henry with hardships with his dad, his son, and his friend showing how these challenges shaped him to be the person he grew up to be.
Leading with Soul is both an inspiring book and a guide for becoming a better leader. The book alternates between telling the story of a leader who is striving to find meaning in his work, and regular interludes, which include summaries, reflective questions, and information regarding various spiritual philosophies. I was exposed to dimensions of leadership I had never previously considered. This paper will reflect upon how Leading with Soul helped me understand the spiritual nature of leadership, identify strategies for nurturing the spiritual side of my own leadership, expand my capacity for assisting others during challenging times, and increase my compassion while working with difficult others.
In the novel A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J Gaines, Grant is a main character that has a lot of influence over the people in his community. Some might even consider him a hero. I believe that Grant is a hero because he helps Jefferson become a man, changes himself for the better, and wants to continue changing the community. Over the course of the novel, Grant helps Jefferson become the man that he needs to be in order to walk to his death with honor. When Grant first begrudgingly went to visit Jefferson in prison Jefferson was in a really low state.
Because of the diligence of fellow blogger and interviewer Francesca, I was made aware of another budding actor who joined the When Calls the Heart cast this season--Camden Filtness. She interviewed and featured him first, and then I decided to jump in and ask for an interview as well. Thankfully, Camden made some time, and he was quite forthcoming about his origins within the business, his early works, his Hallmark work, and even a look at what may be down the road for him. RH: Why did you decide to become an actor? What kind of training have you had?.

Merit is the idea of earning or “being worthy” of something that someone has done for the greater good for themselves. With merit this initials the responsibility, leadership, and possibly even the hardship that comes along with it. We, as a class, have just recently finished reading the novel “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe. Achebe takes us through the lives of the Igbo people, but most importantly the life of Okonkwo; the protagonist of the novel who we really come to understand and feel for. We are currently reading “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Mistakes are inevitable, but the lessons that can be learned from them are far more outstanding than anything else. As the Roman poet Horace once said, “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant”, in which he implies that even the worst hardships faced in life can lead to growth in an individual. Ann Patchett heavily emphasises this idea in her novel, State Of Wonder, as the main character Marina Singh retreats and avoids her adversity until she is thrown into an opposite, unfamiliar environment that exposes and forces her to face high-stress situations and potential failure in return for mental growth. Marina wasn’t always the black and white, restricted character she depicts herself to be in the beginning of the book-she was actually a very passionate student that aspired for success. As a student under Dr
In Katherine Boo’s Beyond the Beautiful Forevers, the main character Asha is an aspiring slumlord. Hoping to ride the corrupt system that surrounds her out of poverty, Asha spends most of her days taking bribes to solve the problems of her local Annawadi villagers. While Asha may not have many resources at her disposal, her cunning and abject ruthlessness in achieving her objective allows her to continuously climb up the social hierarchy of the undercity. If Asha read The Attack by Yasmina Khadra, she would likely sympathize with The Sheikh as he shares Asha’s same ruthless desire to see her dreams made into reality. Life isn’t easy for anyone who lives in the squalor and filth of Annawadi, a slum located outside of the Mumbai international
