The symbol of the night here represents the events of the Holocaust, which are so terrifying that they don’t seem real. The use of the word nightmare highlights the immense feelings that Elie goes through. Nightmares are usually times when one experiences strong fear that may not always have a logical explanation. Here, Elie is not only afraid for his life, but for his whole existence and identity.
The night is a time when God is not looking upon his people – the time of the Devil. The symbol of the long night represents the abandonment of God from Elie. By turning Elie’s life into a single long night, the camps make him disregard his religion to focus on his survival, turning him from a human into an animal. The horrors of the camps change Elie’s

For Stein, the relative from Antwerp, family is everything. His only reason for trying to survive is the false hope that one day he may meet his family once again. This passage tells us about the importance of the loved ones in the rough conditions of the camps. Stein’s only purpose are his wife and children.
The camp changes Elie, it breaks the link he used to have to his father. Even though they seem inseparable, they are alone when it comes to survival and endurance. Elie’s only wish upon seeing the beating is to get away in case the supervisor attacks him. This moment demonstrates that in the camp survival comes before anything else, even one’s family.
The image of the pipel is key to the father-son relationships in the book, as it shows a fate Elie is desperately trying to evade. The pipel show the worst side of the camps, which not only kill the Jews, but also turn them against each other. The traditional family ideals are turned around - instead of helping their elders, the youth use them as slaves.

One of the most compelling themes in night is Identity. Identity is such an issue for Wiesel because the events of Night coincided with Wiesel’s adolescence. Elie is seemingly firm in his identity and self awareness at the beginning of the Novel. He prioritizes his faith and he conceptualizes his place in society in relation to others. Once Elie is forced to spend an impressionable part of his adolescence in the Concentration Camp, his sense of perception is warped.
In the book Night, we the readers witness the hardships and struggles in Elie’s life during the traumatic holocaust. The events that take place in this story are unbearable and are thought to be demented in modern times. In the beginning Elie is shown as a normal teenage Jewish boy, but the events are so drastic that we the readers forget how he was like in the beginning. Changes were made to Elie during the book, whether they were minor or major. The changes generated from himself, the journey, and other people.
The message conveyed in Night is something that still happens today. The message in Night is that it is easy to dehumanize people when higher officials approve it. Throughout the book Elie is being dehumanized. At a certain point in the concentration camps, the Jews are given tattoos.
In this book Elie speaks of his hardships and how he survived the concentration camps. Elie quickly changed into a sorrowful person, but despite that he was determined to stay alive no matter the cost. For instance, during the death
In Night. People in concentration camps tried to protect each other but struggled very hard to do so. Sometimes, they barely had a chance to begin with. For example, Elie witnessed someone kill himself because they already committed all he had left to taking care of a family member and was stuck. “A terrible thought crossed my mind: What if he had wanted to be rid of his father?
What can we learn about human nature from the book Night? Human nature is the general psychological characteristics, feelings, and qualities of humankind which determines human behavior and motivation. We can learn that there is a lot of examples of human nature in the book Night like losing hope during desperate times, doing anything for food and going to the extreme for pleasure and sex. Night shows us that human nature will lose hope during desperate times, that they will just give up when they're in pain. For example in Night on page 105 second paragraph, it states “I can't anymore . . .
In the beginning of Elie’s experience, he gets the choice to abandon the ghetto and go with the family’s former maid to a safe shelter. He chose to stay because Elie would have been separated from his parents and little sister. This choice had a negative impact, but also a positive one. The negative side is that Elie’s family stayed in the ghettos, and then the concentration camps. At the time, no one could believe the rumors about the Nazis.
“Yes, you can lose somebody overnight, yes, your whole life can be turned upside down. Life is short. It can come and go like a feather in the wind. ”- Shania Twain.
This is just one example of the internal conflict going on endlessly within himself. When thinking of family, there are good times and bad times. When experiencing the moments that are extremely difficult for Elie and his father, he often thinks how great life would be if he could just get rid of his father’s dead weight. One evening when Elie’s father is very ill, the had of the block approaches Elie and tells him, “‘Don’t forget your in a concentration camp. Here, every man has to fight for himself and not think of anyone else.
As a result, Elie’s father dies, but Elie doesn’t cry he has to stay strong,s o that he can get out of the camps. To summarize, Elie tried his best to keep his dad alive, and he has to stay strong. In conclusion, the book “NIght” is showing us that jews didn’t have it easy and all they had was insanity. Insanity is a major theme because the book tells us about the life of torture the jews were going
Why is the book called “Night”? “Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, that turned my life into one long night seven times sealed. ”(p. 34) Never shall I forget that smoke.(p. 34) That night, the soup tasted of corpses.
As Elie writes about his brutal experiences in Auschwitz, he recalls stories that demonstrate how sometimes the most difficult struggle that he had, was the preservation of his own humanity, while the world around him was in complete chaos and disorder. Humanity is the most appropriate word to describe Night, because of Elie’s experiences of both humanity and inhumanity as he writes about his experience in Auschwitz. One of these experiences he recalls is
Once liberated from these concentration camps, Elie has done much to make people around the world more aware of the indescribable events that occurred during his time in these camps, and make sure that people will speak out against these events instead of staying silent, so that these events may be prevented in the future. He wrote many pieces and delivered many speeches in attempt to lift the world out of indifference. I believe that Elie’s novel Night communicates his message more effectively than his speech, Perils of Indifference. Not only does it convey his message of that we all must speak out against
Elie was held captive in concentration camps from 1944-1945. During his time in the concentration camps, he became grateful for what he had, overcame countless obstacles, and more importantly kept fighting until he was free. [The Holocaust is very important to learn about because it can teach you some important life lessons.] You should always be grateful for what you have, no matter what the circumstances are. This lesson can be learned when Elie says, “After my father’s death, nothing could touch me any more”(109).
But then he experiences the hardships of the Holocaust and it abruptly changed him. In the book Night, the main theme is religious belief, shown when Elie talks about the his strong religion and belief as a boy, his disconnection from religion, and the inhumane actions the Nazis caused. Having a strong belief in something so important to who we are and then being confronted with horrors which cause us to cease to believe, is a significant life changing event. During this time, many people questioned where God truly was. Even Elie was questioning where God was.
