Being in an unhealthy relationship is something women nowadays are not obligated to put up with. If they ever feel that their husband is not treating them good; they have the right to ask for a divorce. Otherwise, they could end up with mental problems or death. Back in the nineteenth century, divorce was not an option for women. Females were forced to stay with their husband whether they were treated right or not. Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper” and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Birthmark” were both written back in the nineteenth century and have characteristics of the way relationships used to be back then. These elements of literature make the wall-paper come to life for both the narrator and the audience. “The front pattern does move”(55) personifies the wall-paper to be so animate and physically restraining that the woman behind it must shake it to attempt to escape. The italicization of “does” serves to further affirm that the wallpaper exhibits restrictive human-like behaviors - particularly those of dominant men in society. The narrator states that there are “a great many woman behind”(55), extending the metaphor to all Victorian women in the United States and others around the world who are oppressed.

Jane’s husband, John, is the typical man of the 19th century. He doesn’t treat her much like his wife, but instead like a joke and property. Quotes from the story such as, “John laughs at me, of course, but one expects that in marriage” and “What is it little girl?” are a only few examples. For one to expect their husband to laugh at serious feelings is not the ideal marriage today. With the way John treats her, it is easy to see that he plays a part in her depression.
