Keaton Troyer Ms. Wolter Period #5 3/20/23 Walter Dean Mayers once said, “Courage is the ability to do the right thing, all the time, no matter how painful or uncomfortable it might be" Through the exploration of this unit, many characters have shown courage. More specifically, ¨The Treasure of Lemon Brown¨, ¨The Friday Everything Changed¨ written by Anne Hart, and Martin Luther King best exemplify the quote by Tony Dungy. The story ¨The Treasure of Lemon Brown¨ helps understand and connect to the quote because to protect your treasure you must be always ready. In the story the author states ¨but not before Greg saw him hurl his body down the stairs at the men who had come to take his treasure. ¨ This helps understand the quote …show more content…
All the girls conjoined to fight back as it states ¨Instead of just standing back and watching Alma get beaten up, as we usually did when the boys were after someone, the girls rushed right in to try and help her. ¨ This makes sense because the boys always got what they wanted, they got to be the only people to hit during the games and they were the only ones to be able to carry the water buckets. So, that is why it was important when the girls stood up for themselves. The teacher says to all the students ¨ “Next week,” said Miss Ralston, closing the school register, tidying her books, “next week Alma Niles and Joyce Shipley will go for the water.” This was important because after the girls stood up for themselves to make a change, they finally got the results they wanted, which is what the quote says. This means that they quote and this story line up because when you want something, and you keep working for it then you can achieve …show more content…
He was an activist that made a significant impact on the world and especially America because he fought for his cause when segregation was an important thing in the US. A big time that he stood up for his and a lot of colored people's rights was at the Selma to Montgomery march in 1965 and this was an important protest because it was a bunch of people fighting for the right to vote. Also, Martin Luther King got shot on April 4, 1968, in a hotel at 6:05 when he was standing outside on the balcony of his hotel room. James Earl Ray was the guy that shot him, and he did it because he thought that the colored should not have any rights and he did not like that he was making change in the US. Martin Luther King supports this quote because he fought for years and years and he finally got what he was working for. Even though he got killed he still left an enormous impact on the world and change millions of people's
Therefore, sending the girls away was an offer the parents could not pass up. However, most of the girls seem to do very well at this school while others seem to not do so well. The story is being told through Claudette who the middle aged sister. Claudette watches her sisters’ struggle
People that show courage in hard times know what could happen to them yet they act upon it to win a battle. In To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, many characters show true courage when they are under pressure or should not as they know something bad will happen to them. Mrs. Dubose, Atticus Finch, and Jem Finch all show courage and perseverance even though they know that something bad will happen to
To Kill a Mockingbird demonstrates that courage means standing up for what is right, no matter the cost. One of the most significant characters who demonstrates this is when Atticus tries so hard to help Tom Robinson even though he knows that they won’t win. A quote that best shows this is, “Atticus, are we going to win it”
Martin Luther King was an activist who fought for the rights of black people by leading nonviolent protests. Martin helped the black community deeply by being responsible for acts like the Civil Rights Act of 1964, The Voting Rights Act, and the Fair Housing Act of 1968. In addition, he also led the civil rights movement with his vision of change and leadership, which made the world a better place for all colored people. In “Letter from Birmingham Jail” Martin says “Nonviolent direct action seeks to create tension so a community will move toward negotiation”. Martin Luther King firmly believed nonviolent direct action was a very effective tactic so the community will slowly begin to understand the racism they were facing.
First, the girls faced an individual vs individual conflict. On page 72, Mother said, “Try and touch her.” This quote shows an individual vs individual conflict. Mother pointed a sword at a stranger who was yelling at Yoko to “Make room” in
Courage. Courage is a signal for standing up for yourself or trying new things. A quote by Tony Dungy is, “ Courage is the ability to do the right thing, all the time, no matter how painful or uncomfortable it might be”. Different texts like “The Terror” and “The Friday Everything Changed” are a great example of Tony ’s quote.
During the 1930’s this quote very much relates to life, having to keep going and never stop no matter what, which takes a lot of courage and perseverance to do. The novel, “Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry,” the Logan family lives in Mississippi 1934. During this time, the Logans, who were a southern black family, had to constantly fight for their land because they were black. They also had to persevere and show enormous amounts of courage through these
Napoleon Bonaparte, a former emperor, once said, “Courage is not having the strength to go on; it is going on when you don't have the strength.” Similarly, courage is a central theme shown through the characters in the historical fiction novel To Kill A Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee. The novel tells a story about a young girl, Scout, living in the 1930s, in Maycomb, Alabama. She tells the story of how her father, Atticus Finch, defends a wrongly accused black man, Tom Robinson. Atticus is courageous for defending his client during the Jim Crow South.
Martin Luther King was a Civil Rights activist. He spoke on behalf of millions of African-Americans around the nation in search of a complete freedom. He spoke on behalf of African-Americans who wanted to sit in the same place as their white peers, speak without getting that glare only a white supremacist could give when in the presence of a minority, have laws that protected them like the laws that protected the majority did. In his marches, and public papers and letters, King spoke of theses injustices. In his Letter from Birmingham Jail, King describes just and unjust laws.
Courage has gone through many changes. It has been altered throughout races, cultures, religions, sex, and time. However, the core values of courage has always remained parallel. It is difficult to explain in words the meaning of courage, like describing a color, but everyone knows what courage is, how it feels, and how to perform it. In Harper Lee’s
In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Scout, Calpurnia, and Atticus stand out when courage comes to mind. These characters show courage in many unique ways with different situations. In the early 1930s, in the deep south, racial discrimination was a huge conflict, for example, the Jim Crows Laws were in play, and it legalized segregation between blacks and whites. Courage isn’t always shown in situations, but simply throughout growing up.
Greg wet his lips, put his hands to his mouth and tried to make a sound. Nothing came out. He swallowed hard, wet his lips once more and howled as evenly as he could. “What’s that?”"(71-73 Dean Myers) we can see just how scared Greg is, yet he decides to be courageous and overcome his fear to help lemon brown. This relates to Nelson Mandela's quote because he says that a brave man is afraid but is courageous enough to overcome his fear which is exactly what Greg had to do to save Lemon Brown.
Martin Luther King Jr. helped us realize that segregation and poverty are wrong. He also helped us realize that we should treat people the same. No matter race, color, or gender. He has impacted our everyday lives with the Civil Rights Act and his “I Have a Dream…” speech. He is an important man with an important history.
He grew up with a deeply rooted determination to obtain equal rights for all American citizens. He led many protests and gave extremely motivating speeches that eventually made him the most known Civil Rights leader. “Martin Luther King Jr. emerged as the head of a movement for justice and equality that branched out from Montgomery and swept through the south” (ramsees7). This established the success in his accomplishments within the marches
People should not never have fear when something happens but not let fear get in the way when something happens. In the treasure of lemon brown It states “Don't try nothing’ ‘cause i got a razor sharp enough to cut a week into nine days” demonstrating how greg has enough courage to say something when he is hearing noises or possibly a person and attack someone if they are there. Another piece of evidence is “as greg howled , the light moved away from lemon brown, but not before greg saw lemon hurl his body down the stairs at the men who had came to take his treasure” proving greg is not afraid to get the attention on him and possibly get hurt, needing courage. Also reinforcing lemon brown is not afraid to go head on with the men, a who are trying to get his treasure, also needing courage.
