Introduction Chapter three will provide the reader with research methods and procedures that were used to conduct this thesis. The research methods and procedure section will be described in details how the student researcher obtained the data. Research Methods and Procedures The significant aspect of the research process consists of various peer reviewed research journals, published books and web based news articles. All of the sources gathered to compose this thesis were within the last five years, on what prior researchers have done regarding recruiting Asian-American police applicants. The initial phase of this thesis was shaped by research objectives and questions regarding the underrepresentation of Asian-Americans in U.S. law enforcement; challenges of recruiting Asian-Americans; and methods to dispel common barriers among the Asian community. The recommended methods proposed in this thesis are approaches to attract and identify prospective Asian-American police applicants. Relevant findings within the literature indicate the importance of police-community interactions, which could build trusting relationships and emphasize the honorable and exciting aspects of law enforcement. Law enforcement agencies across the U.S. have utilized the philosophy of community policing not only to solve crimes, but also to promote racial diversity in police agencies. Police should be recruiting military veterans and adopting the army 's sensitivity training so officers are more understanding when it comes to the people they swore to protect. Sensitivity training teaches officers how to deal with people from different religions and cultures. Perkins continues on saying that there is a divide between the local law enforcement and their communities. Part A In the field of public safety it is important to understand and acknowledge other cultures within our society. By understanding differences among individuals, officers can increase their ability to serve and protect our community through the idea of community policing. However, not everyone is entitled to the same opinion that I have in regard to culture. For my one-on-one interview I decided to interview someone who I did not know in order to obtain an unbiased perspective on this topic.
Pattern of Discrimination in Police Agencies Discrimination in police agencies is a big problem in this country. This discrimination comes in different forms and names. The three mains types are Institutionalized discrimination, Contextual discrimination, and Individual acts of discrimination. These patterns of discrimination can occur because that’s the way it has always has been done or because of the situation. Despite that, one way this chapter can help increase knowledge on criminal justice issues is the fact that it suggests we should conscious of bias; especially, when sample is not fully representative of the larger population from which it was selected. For example, many law enforcement agencies believe that black and minorities made up a large percentage of criminals in this country, and they are more like to be up to no good. But if looked at it in the other way, maybe the law enforcement bias toward black and minority is the issue not the fact that minorities are more likely to be criminal because according to multiple research black and minority are 2 to 3 times more likely to be stopped by the police for minor violation than white in the United States (The Stanford Open Policing Project, 2017). Meanwhile, in U.K. they are “Now more than eight times more likely to be stopped by police than white people” (Cockburn, 2017). In those cases, since they are more likely to be stopped by the police that leads them to be more likely to be opened for search and more likely to be arrested.
Minorities in the community have been subjected to violence by law enforcement in the United States for some time. This violence is called police brutality and it is unacceptable. The job of a police officer is to maintain public order, prevent, and detect crime. They are a part of a dangerous and stressful career that can involve risky situations that must be controlled. Sometimes police are put in situations that excessive force is needed.
Thesis: Women role and workplace experiences have changed significantly from the time that they were first employed as police matrons in the late 1800s-early 1900s. Policing has traditionally been a male dominated profession in the United States. Nevertheless , there are more women employed by police agencies today than ever before. There are many stereotypes that women in the law enforcement field struggle with not only as they obtain a title in the field, but as they work to obtain it. Dealing with the so called "male-oriented profession" the law enforcement field opened the doors to many women not only in the United States, but around the world.
