Animal Farm by George Orwell depicts a world where animals are promised freedom from oppression, a society without class division, and equality for all. However, these promises are broken when Napoleon, the dictator, rises to power through fear and manipulation. In order to maintain his power, Napoleon utilizes the power of propaganda and censorship to control what the animals see and believe. This essay will explore how the use of fear and manipulation allowed Napoleon to rise to power, and how propaganda and censorship allowed him to maintain his rule. The fear of Jones returning allows Napoleon to manipulate the animals into thinking that he is their hero and protector. All the animals do not want Jones back, and would go to many heights in order to not …show more content…
Squealer reads out lists of figures to the animals on Sunday mornings, proving that the production of every class of foodstuff had increased, which the animals see no reason to disbelieve “On Sunday mornings Squealer, holding down a long strip of paper with his trotter, would read out to them lists of figures proving that the production of every class of foodstuff had increased by two hundred percent, three hundred percent, or five hundred percent, as the case might be” (Orwell 81). If they knew that their living conditions were worse than before the rebellion, ideas of rebellion would soon rise, meaning Napoleon would not be able to maintain his power without propaganda. Additionally, when the animals sing “Beast of England” to express their mourning after the executions, Squealer announces that the song has been abolished, “Beast of England had been abolished. From now onwards, it was forbidden to sing” (Orwell 78). Pulling the song prevents the animals from communicating their rebellion, allowing Napoleon to keep what they see and hear in check as a preventive
Surely comrades, you do not want Jones back?”(56). Squealer convinces the animals to stop holding debates in order to keep Jones away, and they do this willingly, giving Napoleon a large advantage over maintaining his status as leader. Squealer’s convincing speeches in support of Napoleon strike a chord with Boxer. Boxer is a loyal and hardworking animal on the farm that the other animals look up to. Boxer comes up with the motto “Napoleon is always right”.
In the novel written by George Orwell, the presence of narcissism amongst the pigs results in unjust control of the animals, as well as deprivation of their freedom and the ability to interact with the natural world. The use of propaganda within Animal Farm shows a great example of how media controls citizens in a dystopia. In order for the pigs to maintain total control of the farm’s society, they manipulate the other animals. The author presents, “he announced that, by a special decree of Comrade Napoleon, Beasts of England had been abolished” (Orwell 88).
Squealer used logos to convince the animals that Napoleon is a hero and Snowball is the enemy. As the animals were gathered together listening to Squealer, Squealer said “It has all been proved by documents which he left behind him and which we have just discovered” (56). These documents are presented as proof of Snowball’s working with Farmer Jones to undermine Animal Farm. The animals believe Squealer because most of them are unable to read and since the pigs can read, the animals believe the pigs must be correct in saying that Snowball is working with Jones. Squealer used the rhetorical strategy of rewriting history to convince the animals that Napoleon is a hero
How Hypocrisy and Lies Play a Major Role in the Leadership of the Pigs Lies and hypocrisy can play a major role in a person or group’s leadership. In the book Animal Farm by George Orwell, animals on a farm are unhappy with their life, so they rebel and take over their farm for themselves.. In the beginning of the book the white boar on the farm which everyone calls Old Major has had a dream where man has gone from the Earth and all is peaceful. He also sings a song called Beast of England. It talks of a time when man will be overthrown from the Earth and animals will rein the Earth and there will be no more hunger and no more cruel punishment for any animals.
What with the dictatorship of the pigs as well as a the mistreatment of the other animals, it is clear that Animal Farm is something much more than a story about livestock. “Napoleon becomes better and better at satisfying his own goals and needs and in duping the other animals into believing that he is doing it all for them. Each new project that takes all their energy keeps them from questioning whether their lives are truly improved. Napoleon is a master of propaganda, as was Stalin.” As a result of not only lying to the animals and distracting them with new projects that drain them emotionally and physically, but feeding them endless propaganda lead the animals to follow Napoleon and not acknowledge the absence of liberty that they are experiencing.
A world where they are free from their oppressors, a world without classes that tear societies apart, a world where everyone is equal. Those were the promises of Animalism in the novel, Animal Farm, by George Orwell. A story of lies, false promises, and the rise of the dictator, Napoleon who inevitably becomes the oppressor that the animals had started a rebellion. Napoleon's rise to power and maintenance of it makes the rebellion seem like it had never happened. The methods that dictators use to be able to rise to power are the use of fear and manipulation and they are able to maintain their power over society with propaganda and censorship.
In chapter five of George Orwell’s Animal Farm, fear becomes a primary component in silencing the animals. Snowball uses his intelligence to design a windmill, speaking above Napoleon. With Snowballs ingenious ideas, comes controversy. Napoleon disagrees with the windmill idea so his followers speak against it, forming a divide in the animals. When finishing his speech about why the windmill should the build, Snowball gets attacked and chased out of the farm by Napoleon’s trained dogs.
He makes them believe everything he and the pigs are doing is for the greater good of the whole farm despite the fact that it is not. Squealer controls them in many ways but the strongest or most apparent are telling the other animals Mr. Jones their neglective abusive owner will come back, lying about Boxer the horse’s death, and finally changing the unalterable commandments into one that reads “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others”. One of the very first and most used techniques Squealer uses is instilling fear in the animals. He does this by threatening Jones’s return.
Sometimes it is necessary to take chances, just like the animals did in the book "Animal Farm". The animals in the book "Animal Farm" were tired of the farmers treating them like slaves. The farmers worked them to the point of cruelty, giving them the minimum amount of food to keep them alive. The animals were tired and hungry and finally had enough, so the decided to overthrow the farmers. I think that the chance the animals were taking was necessary in order to keep themselves alive.
Benjamin is an obscure character but is the wisest animal of them all. He does not talk very much alternately he observes his surroundings with great detail. By spending so much time observing others & their actions he obtains more information then any other animal has. In the end of chapter 8 Animal Farm a strange event occurs which leaves all the animals perplexed and baffled.
Rationale Animal Farm is a political allegory that represents the Russian Revolution but instead of people the author, George Orwell, decided to use animals. Also the book emphasizes the communist system at that time but in the story the animals called Animalism. In this written assignment I will create a new character called Tornado who tries to save Boxer after Napoleon lied to the animals and called the Horse Slaughterer to kill Boxer instead of the hospital because he was sick, but Tornado can’t save him so he started to feel bad about what happened. This character will represents bravery, friendship, solidarity and other qualities that the other animals don’t have, especially Napoleon, because he only thinks in himself but in the other
The last chapter in “Animal Farm,” starts years later. Many animals have died but many have replaced them. Two new animals were brought from Pilkington’s farm, the two horses are very stupid. The windmill was finally rebuilt and is now being used for milling corn. There is still very little food on the farm.
Animal Farm by George Orwell is somewhat of a cautionary tale outlining the dangers that accompany having one leader with superior knowledge and absolute power. The story begins with the secret meeting among the farm animals of Manor Farm, a farm run by the drunk and irresponsible Mr. Jones. Speaking at this meeting is the venerable Old Major, an old boar with great sagacity and who is revered among his peers. Old Major tells the animals of a dream that he has had, in which animals live long and happy lives, emancipated from human tyranny. Old Major continues to encourage his fellow animals to overthrow their human rulers, and live in camaraderie with each other, all as equals.
In Animal Farm, the philosophy opens the public to the truth of which our whole system, is based on fear itself. The fear of living in chaos and with no rights, lead the human race to make the “government”. The fear of not getting something in return, made equivalent exchange; money system. The fear of being “different” and “yourself”, created the figure of society.
I can’t believe that I have been expelled from the farm but I am lucky that I have survived the attack of the dogs. I was born in Animal Farm and grew up and became the leader of the rebellion there but now I am all alone. I was the one who was in the most harmony with Old Major ideas.. I treated all animals equally and almost all of them had respect for me. I always was a caring leader.
