The Witches By: Roald Dahl Introduction The Witches, is a children fantasy horror novel written by the British writer Roald Dahl. It was published in 1983 by Jonathan Cape in London, with illustrations by Quentin Blake. This Roald Dahl classic tells the scary, funny, imaginative tale of a seven- year- old boy that has run with real life witches. Summary A seven- year- old British boy moves in with his Norwegian grandmother after his parents are killed in a car accident. The boy and his grandmother are great friends. The boy’s grandmother is a good story teller. She tells him stories about witches, which she says are awful creatures that chase and kill human children. And tells him how to recognize them so, he will be safe from them. Aside from the distinguishing characteristics which are they have bald heads, which they hide with wigs, clawed hands, that they usually hide with gloves, blue spit, large nostrils, toe – less feet, and mask of human faces to cover their ugly faces. Witches look and act like human women but actually devils in human shape. The grandmother tells him also about the Grand High Witch which is the most evil and most feared among all the witches. When they go on a holiday in Bournemouth hotel in English coast, the boy encounters the members of the Royalty Society for Prevention of Cruelty of Children while he was playing with his mice.
