In Shakespeare’s play The Tragedy of Macbeth, the main character, Macbeth, had many different characteristics, but the one that surpassed all others was his ambition. As the story progressed, there are many examples that can be seen where his ambition has influenced his perspective on right and wrong. His ambition consumed him to a point where he was more monster than mortal as seen when he went on a murdering spree. He then lost people of Scotland’s favor and they rebelled against him leading to his death. While ambition may not necessarily be bad, his blindness to the consequences caused it to become a pernicious trait. In the beginning of the play, Shakespeare introduces three witches who give Macbeth three prophecies about his future. Up until this point Macbeth is the town hero who killed the King’s traitor. It wasn’t until the witches said “All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter” (1.3.50) that Macbeth thought of betraying his king. This prophecy is the catalyst of Macbeth’s blind ambition. Not wanting to wait until he became King, he had thoughts of killing Duncan, the current king. However, he didn’t want to go through …show more content…
While he had Banquo killed, Fleance was able to escape death. After hearing what happened, Macbeth started hallucinating and seeing Banquo’s ghost. Upon arrival he was shown an apparition that told him to beware Macduff (4.1.71-72). Seeing as how Macduff was a threat to his reign, he sent murderers to have him killed. Macduff went to England to find Malcolm, King Duncan’s son, who fled Scotland so he would not be killed like his father. Macbeth no longer considers Macduff loyal to him and becomes apprehensive. Macbeth consorts with the murderers again to kill Macduff’s family, “give to the edge o’ the sword his wife, babes, and all unfortunate souls that trace him in his line” (Act 4, Scene 1). When a messenger comes to deliver the news to Macduff, he becomes sad but Malcolm tells him “… Let grief convert to anger…” (Act 4, Scene 3).
but she's afraid he won't do it. This proves how Macbeth tried to control the future because he was convinced by Lady Macbeth to kill Duncan so he could be the new king. Macbeth did some unspeakable things all at the hands of his wife so he could become
At the start of the play, Macbeth is well respected among King Duncan’s army. He encounters three witches who give him a prophecy that he will become king. At first, Macbeth believes that fate and the natural order will lead him to become king, and he doesn’t have to do anything. Macbeth’s wife convinces him to kill King Duncan, which he eventually proceeds to do. Macbeth continues to commit murders to maintain his power, and he thinks there is no going back.

As proved by Macbeth’s success to become the Thane of Cawdor, the prophecies are Macbeth’s fate; they will be the outcomes of his life, but how they will come to be is dependent on Macbeth’s own choices. When Macbeth shares the prophesies with his wife, Lady Macbeth, she helps him murder King Duncan in order to gain the throne. The witches had predicted that Macbeth would be king but they hadn’t said when or how. It is Macbeth’s own choice to murder Duncan because of his deep desire to become king. Macbeth wants to protect his power and eliminate all enemies that may come in the way.
Once the word gets out that the king has been killed, the suspicion falls onto Malcolm and Donalbain, King Duncan’s sons. Malcolm and Donalbain were smart enough to realize one of their close friends must have murdered their father and they immediately flee. Because of this, the suspicion falls onto the princes. Outside the household, Ross discusses with Macduff his thoughts on Malcolm and Donalbain, “Gainst nature still! Thriftless ambition, that will ravin up Thine own lives’ means” (2.4.27-29).

Is it not weird how ambition for power corrupts one corrupt and leads them to their destiny? Ambition for power is lust which tempts one to be corruptive to acquire and protect it. However, in William Shakespeare’s play Macbeth, it is evident that ambition for power ultimately leads to corruption when Macbeth’s ambition for power causes the assassination of King Duncan, when Macbeth’s ambition for power compels him to execute those who obstruct his inheritance to the Scottish Throne, and finally, when Lady Macbeth persuades Macbeth to assassinate the people who impede his Kingship of Scotland out of lust for power. Macbeth’s ambition for power is the root cause to King Duncan’s assassination.

Macbeth doesn’t act on his thoughts until he tells his wife, Lady Macbeth, that he could become king. Together, they come up with a plan to murder King Duncan, so that Macbeth can become king like the witches foretold.
Ambition is a candle; a leading light with a willpower that guides one to the next light. Yet a wind appears in the opposite direction; making its way to the candle. The strength of the flame will not remain as the wind reflects the malicious change. Poet, William Shakespeare, in his play, “Macbeth”, portrays an intrepid man who loses his humanity and rushes his fate of becoming king; turning into the most hated man in his kingdom. Shakespeare’s purpose is to expand the consequences of leading with an egocentric mentality and depicting the limits of one’s ambition.
What drives apparently good men to become ruthless, ambitious, jealous and greedy? We see an example of this in the play “Macbeth” performed at Pop Up Globe, directed by Tom Mallaburn, was written originally by the well-known author, William Shakespeare. Macbeth is based upon a big tragedy, where the two main characters, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, inevitably were forced to do evil things due to their ambition; taste the sweetness of victory and then downfall again. Although the play was written by an English author, Shakespeare smartly sets his story based upon the idea of ambition, a concept that relates to all of us, no matter where we are from. We have to admit that in our minds, the concept of power and ambition is linked to men.
