Love in the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, is demonstrated through esteem and fairness which is connected by family and friends. The author, Harper Lee, indicates this love through Atticus, who reveals his love by they way he treats Mr. Cunningham and Tom Robinson. As well as, the unbreakable bond between Dill, Scout, and Jem is a lifelong friendship, and Atticus's fatherly love towards Scout and Jem. Throughout the novel love is shown in numerous ways. One example of the way Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird is considered a love story is through the way Atticus treats Mr. Cunningham and Tom Robinson. As Atticus said," I certainly am. I do my best to love everybody... I'm hard put sometimes- baby, it's never an insult to be called what somebody thinks is a bad name. It just shows you how poor that person is, it doesn't hurt you."(Lee,144-145). Atticus explains this to Scout after she asks if he is a n***** lover. One example of this is," As they passed under the streetlight, Atticus reached out and massaged Jem's hair, his one gesture of affection."(Lee,207). This event happened right after Jem and Scout save Atticus from getting hurt by the mob, who were going to the jail to attempt to hurt or kill Tom Robinson. This quote shows how Atticus loves and acknowledges how Jem saved him and Tom by telling Atticus he was staying at the jail. In chapter three, Atticus shows Scout how to love everyone by confessing to her," If you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... until you climb into his skin and walk around in it."(Lee,39). This shows Atticus's care and love for Scout as throughout the book he teaches her life lessons and how Scout and Jem should love
