This concept of sin and atonement can be seen to occur frequently in the novel ‘The Kite Runner’ by Khaled Hosseini through the course of the protagonist, Amir’s life. Hosseini portrays Amir’s quest for redemption beautifully throughout his life as an innocent teenager in the enthralling and serene city of Kabul to his life as a family man in The United States of America. Through Amir’s life, Hosseini clearly portrays the fact that all sins can be atoned however grave or futile they may be and by their atonement one can attain self-satisfaction and can be at peace. According to the Holy Bible, and the Old Testament, an act of committing a sin is that which “separates man from God himself” (Anonymous). Baba, Amir’s father believed that “there is only one sin, only one. And that is theft. Every other sin is a variation of theft.” He further explained, “When you kill a man, you steal a life, you steal his wife 's right to a husband, rob his children of a father.”(Hosseini 17) . In fact, guilt is only felt by a conscientious individual who is aware of doing wrong, and through this strange emotion, people learn what wrong is. Therefore, guilt can be an emotion of opportunity to fix wrong if responded in the right way. However guilt can also intimidate as it is a forceful emotion that haunts people when it is not dealt with.
The author provides the reader with mixed feeling about Amir. In his childhood in Kabul Amir comes off as heartless person. He is this because he has done evil stuff in his life. In the beginning of the story something bad happens to Hassan, Amir says,¨In the end, I ran.

Lastly, Amir sacrifices his life to accommodate for Sohrab, Hassan’s son, after being taken by the Taliban. Amir resembles Baba because he too takes up redemption for the awful things he did. He understands the great danger Sohrab is in. He risks his life to help Sohrab; this shows loyalty to Hassan. Even though Sohrab is not Hassan saving his son shows that Amir is loyal to him.
After Amir and his father flee Afghanistan, as a result of of the Soviet-Afghan War of 1979, they both end up residing in San Francisco, California, where Amir receives the remainder of his education. Hosseini plays with the timeline in the novel, by starting at the beginning, and then flash forwards to December of 2001, not too long after the September 11th Attacks. Amir receives a phone call from his old friend, Rahim Khan, who gives him terrible news that brings back old feelings of guilt. After the call is over, he sits and reflects on Rahim Khan’s words just before he hangs up: "There is a way to be good again." (Hosseini 2).
It helps one to redeem and forgive oneself for all the sins committed in life. This paper will prove that atonement of past sins is possible by using ‘The Kite Runner’ as the primary source and several secondary sources. Amir is one of the main characters of the novel and has committed many sins during his childhood. Unable to forgive himself he goes back to Afghanistan to make things right and become good again.
Although, Amir shows many acts of kindness and selflessness, in the end, he was not able to truly redeem himself. To begin, Amir started his journey to redemption with conviction and confession although he was not very successful. The guilt bothered Amir very often even in his adulthood when he believed he had been denied “fatherhood for the thing [he] had done.” (188) Almost immediately after Amir watched Hassan get raped he believed he had done something wrong. He believed he could not have children with Soraya because he did not help Hassan, but he does not confess until more than fifteen years later.
For the reason that Hassan was raped, Amir felt guilty and began regretting his actions. Every time Amir would do something mean towards Hassan, he felt guilty after the action. “‘Let’s see. ‘Imbecile.’
Baba lies, and Amir and Hassan are influenced by the deception, and Amir’s life is changed as a result. Deception leads to immense suffering and unintended consequences; Hosseini harnesses character’s internal conflicts to showcase the suffering and consequences the character’s had to cope with as a result of deception. Baba was very self-conscious about his image, and as a result he chose to lie to Amir and Hassan about their true fathers without thinking about the possible consequences. Baba thought he was justified in lying because he wanted to protect his Pashtun pride. In lying, Baba contradicted his beliefs; as he had told Amir “There is only one sin…..
“Please think, Amir jan. It was a shameful situation. People would talk. All that a man had back then, all that he was, was his honor, his name,...” (Hosseini 223).
In the novel, The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini tells the story of Amir, a young, Afghan boy who learns about what it means to be redeemed through the experiences he encounters in his life. The idea of redemption becomes a lesson for Amir when he is a witness to the tragic sexual assault of his childhood friend, Hassan. As a bystander in the moment, Amir determines what is more important: saving the life of his friend or running away for the safety of himself. In the end, Amir decides to flee, resulting in Amir having to live with the guilt of leaving Hassan behind to be assaulted. Hosseini shows us how Amir constantly deals with the remorse of the incident, but does not attempt to redeem himself until later in his life when Hassan has died.
In the fiction novel The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, happiness and redemption are two separate occurrences in life that are achieved in different ways. A critic of the novel writes that The Kite Runner is a “thoughtful book in which redemption and happiness are not necessarily the same thing,” The happiness and redeeming qualities of the characters in the novel are not one and the same; sometimes, one is without the other. This leads to a disconnection between these two aspects. When Amir was a young boy in Afghanistan, the one thing that brought him true happiness was when Baba was proud of him.
However, he also turned out to be someone who tried his best to confront his sins and redeem them by building orphanages, fixing Hassan's harelip, and helping others in general (Li Cunxin, Levy98's Blog). Amir’s relationship with his father is a complex one. On a hand, Amir admires his father and is proud to have as his father. On another hand, he hates his father because he feels like he is incapable of amounting to (meeting up with/ rising to/ fulfilling) his father’s expectations.
