Relationships with family can be complicated just like in the story “the Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst when the main character was so embarrassed by his little brother that it killed his brother. The theme that pride can be dangerous is seen through the important statements of the story. The narrator pushes his little brother so much that he ends up dying.
“There is within me (and with great sadness I have watched it in others) a knot of cruelty borne by the stream of love, much as our blood sometimes bears the seed of our destruction,, and at times I was mean to doodle.” This Quote accurately displays the sort of imagery and tone often displayed in the short story with its’ bone chilling effect. The story at times seems like it may take a turn for the better and the mood will get lighter or happier or maybe even fluffier, but no the author brilliantly fools the reader with false hope of happiness, of life, and of content. There is many literary elements used in the scarlet ibis but the most common being bright and intricate Imagery, a foreboding amount of foreshadowing, and a brilliantly set and released mood.
For instance, when Doodle was born his parents were expecting a baby who would die soon, “Daddy had Mr.Heath, the carpenter, build a little mahogany coffin for him”(1). The way Doodles parents act toward his disabilities makes it seem like they would rather have him die then deal with him. The expectations they set for him are so low that when Brother has high expectations for Doodle, he goes beyond his capabilities to reach them. Furthermore, Brother helps Doodle succeed, but he eventually leads him to his downfall.” The knowledge that Doodle’s and my plans had come to naught was bitter, and that a streak of cruelty within me awakened”(6).

Rainsford, after waking up the next morning in Zaroff’s room in Ship-Trap Island, shortly realized he was the new Zaroff. He had to then wait until he got a visitor to hunt down and eat. In the story “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst the narrator’s pride over comes his love for his brother, Doodle. Doodle is physically disabled and is not able to do mostly anything a normal person would be able to do. Although he is disabled he is still jovial but the narrator doesn't see that side of him. From birth to death, we all face obstacles. As newborns, we attempt to identify with our surroundings, and we express our emotions to others. For example, we connect with our mothers by crying. Later on in our lives, we have to overcome obstacles such as learning to walk, speak, write, pass an exam, or find employment. We all have obstacles; we all face challenges and my challenge was with a learning disability that helped me become a better communicator.
Challenges create opportunities for one to discover their passions. My parents’ ideal for my obtaining the American dream was not as easily achieved as one would hope. I faced many obstacles on my journey which molded me into the person that I am today; a reliable, responsible and ultimately compassionate individual. Still, the journey was not traversed, without its difficulties. One such difficulty stands out as milestone in my development.
