CHAPTER ONE 1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY The concept of women empowerment seems to have been used in the 1980s by third world feminists ‘to address the issue of gender differences that exist in the control and distribution of resources’ (Datta & Kornberg, 2002). There is however lack of consensus on its major characteristics. According to Datta and Kornberg (2002), women empowerment refers to ‘strategies that women use to increase their control of resources and generate decision making capacity’. Other authors like Batliwala (1994) however have a wider definition. Research on gender pay gap by UNDP (2009) observes that between 1985 and 2008, inequality in Nigeria worsened from 0.43 to 0.49, placing the country among those with the highest inequality levels in the world. The poverty problem in the country is partly a feature of high inequality which manifests in highly unequal income distribution and differential access to basic infrastructure, education, training and job opportunities. Gender inequality in education is extreme. Girls are less likely to access school, to remain in school or to achieve in education. Despite almost 30 years of the Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), and 20 years of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), today girls make up around 56 per cent of the 77 million children not in school, and women make up two thirds of the adults who are illiterate. Even girls who do enroll in school may have irregular attendance due to other demands on them, and the fact that their education may not be prioritized. Girls are more likely to repeat years, to drop out early and to fail key subjects, and in most countries girls are less likely to complete the transition to secondary schooling. The state or plight of women would be analyzed through the help of three films, ‘Dry’, ‘B for Boy’, and ‘Wives on Strike’. An analysis of these movies would be done to reflect on the plight of women in the Nigerian society. Due to lack of time and insufficient funds this research would be limited in its research methodology. An experiment to test the outcome of this survey would have been ideal, but the researcher was limited by funds and time. This research would utilize education of women as the bedrock to women empowerment. The researcher would not delve into economic empowerment of the woman, but restrict this work to empowering a woman in such a way that she would be able to make certain decisions that affect her life and that of her family. 1.7 RESEARCH
The Every Women Matters Program was a program that was put in place to for women to get early cervical and breast cancer screening testing done. This program was for low-income women in the state of Nebraska. Seven different private practices participated in this program. This paper will discuss the reason the program was put into place as well as the reasons it failed.
The overall percentage of the boys in the academic classes are decreasing as the female success rates are increasing. Teachers and others in higher positions are slowly forgetting about the existence of boys
Women’s Suffrage I chose to write my research paper about how women obtained their rights. Women lived hard, boring lives for years and just let it happen because it was tradition but, they soon realized that they were treated unfairly. They joined together and began rallies in order to spread the word and convince the world that women deserve equal rights. The people listened to these mothers, wives, daughters--these women and they soon gained their rights. The women’s suffrage movement began with unhappy women looking to protest and fight for what they believed in and ended with them succeeding.
The world is full of problems, but an issue that I have chosen to shed some light on is the education in Burkina Faso or rather the lack of education for females in Burkina Faso. Burkina Faso is a country with very low literacy rates and just does not have a very good education system. The education system is charging large amounts of money to the very poor families who barely have enough money to keep all of their family living. In the article, “It’s Not Just About the Boys. Get Girls into School,” written by Jonathan Alter and published on Newsweek he focuses on spreading awareness about all the reasons in which certain children in Burkina Faso are not getting the proper education if they are getting any education at all.
Before the Reformation, women not seen or viewed as equals to men in any way. Men believed that a woman's role is to bear children and be something like a housewife, taking care of the children and the house. They were not to hold any major responsibilities because society believed that it is not a women’s place and that they would not be able to handle it since they thought that women have limits. During the Reformation in the sixteenth and seventeenth century, society’s attitude toward women changed. The society started to view women as equals in religion and education, but apart of society still believed in the subordination of women, which caused some things not to change.
With the rise of civilization also came the rise of patriarchy-based societies and the slow decline of the importance of women in society. For the longest time the history of the world has been written by men who have been the head of the patriarchy and have forgotten the role of women in history. It is important to realize that women do in fact have a place at the table with men when it comes to importance in history, and are not just the ones cooking and serving the meal. It is women who tasked with raising the next generation. By looking at women of the past, people of the future can learn and evolve to fight oppression and gain their own power.
Although empowerment theory is intended to alleviate the oppression of marginalized groups, there are no specific guidelines or procedures for doing so (Gutierrez et al., 1995). As a result, this theory may prove to be too abstract for some practitioners, as there are no specific processes for implementing empowerment in an individual, group, or community and it is a more open-ended
Thesis Proposal Title The impact women’s right to vote had on economic growth in the U.S, as women in integrated into the labour force from the 1920’s to the 1990’s. Background Prior to the 1920s, before women got their right to vote in America. They took up in the more subservient role in society, they were not seen as equal to the men.
The Progressive Era of the early 1900s was a period of economic growth in the United States. Millions flocked to the cities like New York in pursuit of wealth, freedom, and a chance at making a better life for themselves and their families. As a prime focus during the Progressive Era, women challenged social and political barriers, which led to their empowerment and a new female political agenda. Women began to become more prominent in the workplace and by 1920, nearly 25 percent of employed women had office jobs or worked as a telephone operator (Eric Foner, Give Me Liberty! An American History Volume 2, 700).

Empowerment through participation; this means the delegation of decision-making from management arena, for example, the use of autonomous working groups.
The fact also arises that women not only suffer from lack of recognition for the work they do in households but also for their work in their jobs. Women work as much as men, if not more. When both paid and unpaid work such as household chores and caring for children are taken into consideration, women work longer hours than men—an average of 30 minutes a day longer in developed countries and 50 minutes in developing countries. This is known as second shift, where women not only work at their jobs but also come back home and complete their household chores. However their contribution remains minimum due to unequal wage pay and lack of consideration given to household chores.
Empowered men and women are in a better position for contributing towards productivity of the entire family, they also support in improving prospects specifically for the future generation. In third world countries, girls are fighting their families, communities, and countries in order to go to school. Governments need to support these young women and fulfill their dreams. Not only will it empower women, but it will positively impact each family, community, and country. Firstly, the only way to decrease the educational gap between males and females is to implement policies that decrease or completely remove school fees for girls and prohibit families from removing their daughters from school before the age of 18. As a result, these nations will achieve gender equality as both females and males will be equally qualified for jobs.
Analysis Issue Nowadays, there are still women not allowed to be educated in some countries. This issue is drawing more and more attention. Many countries are starting to make a big step towards the goal of gender equality in education but there are still 62 million women in the world who are not allowed to attend education. Gender equity faces obstacles like the lack of education for both boys and girls, and the challenges of deviating from societal stereotypes and norms. Nevertheless, if actors from the private and public sector come together, public policy can be created to strengthen women’s lives and rights. Why Gender Equality is Important A Social Justice Issue Women cannot escape poverty, be adroit, nor become autonomous, if they do not have a good-paying job. This is difficult to attain without higher education, in a society who dismisses their employment applications and that teaches women they are submissive and physically, cognitively, and psychologically inferior to men.
