Throughout the novel, Scout asks many people who Boo Radley is. Many have responded with horrible stories and negative words towards him. But as she and her older brother, Jem, find little trinkets in a knot hole, it shows how all he is, is a man who was imprisoned by the fear of his own father, just wanting a friend. Many look at Boo Radley as a worse person than Mr. Ewell, a man who was willing to kill two children just to get even. If it wasn’t for Boo, Jem and Scout would have died by the hands of Mr. Ewell. “Boo’s hand came up, but he let it drop to his side. ‘You can pet him Mr.Arthur, he’s asleep’.....Boo’s hand hovered over Jem’s head..his hand came down lightly on Jem’s hair.” (372). That small touch was his way of caring, showing what he’d do just to make a friend. Boo is an amazing character who symbolizes
Published in 1960, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is seen as a book embedded into the American public school education system with good reasons. To Kill a Mockingbird symbolizes innocence, classism, and racism. We look through all of these statements from an 8 year old girl nicknamed Scout as she grows up during the Great Deppression, When Scout was around 7 years old, a trial shook the little town of Maycomb when a 19 year old girl accused a black man named Tom Robinson of raping her. Being set in the 1930’s when segregation was a prominent factor in America, With little evidence and witnesses Tom Robinson was still found guilty and was sentenced to death by electrocution.
Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird brings out many emotions as you read the book. It was published in 1960 and became a total hit. To Kill a Mockingbird is set in Alabama, in a small town, Maycomb, during the 60’s. The book makes you feel as if you were the main character, Scout, a young 8 year old girl.
There was a long jagged scar that ran across his face; what teeth he had were yellow and rotten; his eyes popped, and he drooled most of the time” (Lee 13). Jem describes Boo as if he’s a blood-hungry monster. This shows that since his father has locked him away and treated him like a monster.
In the climatic scenes of To Kill A Mockingbird, Boo Radley puts himself in between Mr. Ewell and Scout. Scout thinks in that moment, “He [Bob Ewell] slowly squeezed the breath out of me. I could not move. Suddenly, he was jerked backwards and flung on the ground, almost carrying me with him… He [Boo Radley] was carrying Jem [home]”
Another characters are “Jem and Scout” while walking home from the pageant. The last one is a man name “Boo Radley” at the end of the novel. These will show how the book symbolize, that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird. A man named “Tom Robinson” is a symbol of being a sin to kill a mockingbird.
Most of the whites are racist to the blacks but there is a little racist in colored people too because one time Jem and Scout were heading to a colored church and some old grumpy mean lady came by and told them they weren’t allowed in the negro church. In my opinion I think that Tom Robinson isn’t guilty because he looks like an honest and nice looking man, I don’t go on the white side because Mayella is probably the one who is lying all this time just because he is black, and also he said “ I was scared because I didn’t want to go to jail and end up in court like I am in now”. Now the only difficulties I had for believing Tom Robinson was that when Mr Gilmer said he was given thirty days once for disorderly conduct, he might of or might of not raped the women but the expressions he was showing made me believe him because he looks like a very good and honest man. The themes of poverty is a seven year old boy named Dill who has no family and is poor, Atticus finds Dill late at night under her bed, it is really sad that back then people didn’t help the poor or even care
Many characters through the story, ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’, have faced situations to be courageous, shown through many different examples. Boo radley, Atticus, & Scout are the main characters that had to show courage continuously in the story. To be courageous means to be brave in situations that other people may not agree with but in your mind you know its right to say and/do something. Boo Radley was a very shy but, courageous character all throughout the story. He was always in his house because of the trauma in his childhood.
Lastly is when the children were attacked, Boo protected them. These are all examples of how Boo helped the kids. Towards the end of the novel, after the kids realize all the nice things Boo has been doing for them, they start to change their opinions. They realize he is not a crazy man, he is just a person. A person that has helped them.
Boo notices and enjoys watching the children play throughout the neighborhood, and he is probably aware of their curious nature. Boo simply wants to be friends with Jem and Scout, and his gifts are a token of his friendship.” (Author Unknown). The article shows that Boo just wants friends with Jem and Scout and is truly a kind person. “Jem said Boo was six and a half feet tall, ate squirrels and cats, his teeth were yellow, and he drooled most of the time.”
For instance, when Jem had been unconscious and was laying down, Boo was staring with “ An expression of timid curiosity was on his face, as though he had never seen a boy before. His mouth was slightly open, and he looked at Jem from head to foot. Boo’s hand came up, but he let it drop to his side.” (pg 372). Scout then says that Boo can pet him and “Boo’s hand hovered over Jem’s head.
Some say his hands were bloodstained as he ate squirrels and cats. He was also said to have eaten one of her mother’s fingers when he could not find any. However, Scout believes Boo is just a misunderstood friend. Her naive innocence, helps Scout have the will to give him a chance. When Boo leaves anonymous gifts for Scout and Jem, Jem gives a warning about how an item from the Radley place could kill them.
There was a long jagged scar that ran across his face; what teeth he had were yellow and rotten, his eyes popped, and he drooled most of the time.” Little do they know that Boo Radley will play a huge part in their survival at the end of the book when the crazy Bob Ewell Attacks them and Boo Radley protected them, something that Jem and scout would’ve never imagined, But something that the reader could foreshadow. Due to Boo’s acts of kindness like when he returned Jem’s pants sowed after he got them caught on the barb wire fence while he was snooping and around and also the gifts he left in the knot of the tree that helped him build a deeper sentimental relationship with Jem and Scout even if the kids did not know it. Boo had built such a relationship with them that he had done something extremely courageous and protects Jem and scout from Bob
In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee Arthur aka Boo Radley is a mockingbird because he is a kind recluded person getting harassed by everyone because he’s different but he’s really just a nice person, shy and even protected Jem and Scout from their attacker showing his courage. To begin with, Boo is nice because he gave many things to Scout and Jem through the knothole till his brother Nathan clogged it up with cement because it was “dying” as Scout and Jem thought but really isn’t much proof. “We were walking past our tree. In its knot-hole rested a ball of gray twine”(59) after a bit of talking Jem convinced Scout not to take it yet and leave it waiting to see if someone like Walter Cunningham would take it back. “We went back home.

People hurt others to make themselves seem powerful but never think about how their actions affect other people. In To Kill A Mockingbird, Lee uses two important characters, Boo Radley and Tom Robinson, to represent how it is a sin to kill a Mockingbird. To Kill A Mockingbird is about two kids, Jem Finch and Scout Finch, who has a neighbor, Boo Radley, that is stereotyped as creepy lunatic. Their father, Atticus Finch, has to defend a negro, Tom Robinson, who was accused of rape, and a man named Bob Ewell is angry that Atticus is protecting Tom Robinson because Atticus is protecting the negro who has been accused to have raped Bob’s daughter, Mayella Ewell.
