SCI411 Academic and personal development
Portfolio: Part 1
From not being in education for a few years, being able to recognise my own academic skills, strengths and weaknesses was quite difficult. However, over these first couple of weeks in lectures my learning strengths and weaknesses have made themselves apparent. Whilst filling out the questionnaire Skills Self-Assessment Audit (Theeducators, 2013) it took a lot of understanding of the questions to be able to answer honestly, and my lowest scores reflected this in the personal effectiveness category.
Skill strengths
My strongest attribute is being able to work well in a team and taking lead if needs be. I am very confident in speaking, presenting and asking/answering questions in lectures.

When getting home and reading through my notes this was apparent, as I didn’t fully understand everything I had written and had to do some additional research so I could fully understand everything from the lecture. From attending a year at university previously, I know that planning and writing coursework is difficult for me. I am able to do the research and understand the coursework set, but struggle to write down what I am trying to say. I think this is because I lack the confidence of being able to do a task where I think I may be …show more content…
This will also become useful when coming to write coursework plans as I will already have a lot of the information at hand and won’t be having to try and remember information from lectures, instead I will have it all written down in a way that I understand and is useful to me. This is also useful as anything that I have taken away from a lecture I can read into more in-depth at home or research anything that I didn’t understand and re-write in a way that I will understand for future reference. This also backs up my read/write learning style.
I can use diagrams and pictures where applicable to demonstrate/understand information, not study or read for long periods of time, use study material that uses all my sense i.e. videos, diagrams, field visits, lab work, speaking to lecturers about coursework with my first draft and seeing all feedback as being positive. This will help me to learn by not just sitting and reading in lots of information, it is a much more practical way of learning which links back into my kinesthetic learning preference and backs up the learning style theory of a kinesthetic learner (VARK, 2015).
With having a couple of preferable learning styles I will be able to apply them in different situations when needed
M3 Task: Explain how an awareness of learning styles can aid your development In this task I will be explaining how an awareness of learning styles can aid your development in being an effective learner. There are different types of learning styles that different people have and I’ll be explaining how these aid the learner to progress. For example there are 3 main learning styles these are Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic.
I love to read and learn, I love to read self-improvement books, and books about science. I am drawn to lists that have suggestions, tips, exercises, and suggestions on whatever topic I am interested in at the moment or need to learn about. This strength can help me succeed at GCU because I tend to enjoy talking to my classmates and professors about ideas, theories, and concepts to gather the latest thinking. I love to gather information, I will often delve more deeply into subjects that intrigue me the most people. This could be a positive when I have big projects or research papers.
I am good at problem-solving, staying positive during stressful situations, leading people through difficult times, and being straightforward when I handle unfortunate problems. This reason is one of my best qualities I am open-minded. I am willing to consider new ideas and opinions without being biased. I will acknowledge all these thoughts and go through them while being unprejudiced.
My greatest academic strengths include critical thinking, critical reading, creativity, listening skills, and perseverance. I’ve gained these strengths by challenging myself academically. My greatest academic weaknesses include a short attention span, cramming, and not being a good test
I have great responsibility skills, doing what I need to do when I need to do it. Whether that be a chore, or helping someone out when I owe it. I am fair, treating others fairly like they deserve. Caring is a very important trait I have, as I make sure to be there for people when others are
No one person is the same as another, we all interact, behave, think and feel differently, and I think this is what amazes me the most. One strength that is substantive to my career that I believe I have, is empathy. I have always had such an efficacious sense of empathy with the people around me.
To begin with, my top strength is positivity. According to Rath, “ You are generous with praise, quick to smile, and always on the lookout for the positive in the situation” (Rath p141). I believe it is always important to be positive regardless of how bad a situation is. My job is to motivate others when they become pessimistic of a certain task. This strength is essential in both school and a career as neither a classmate or a co-worker wants to surround him or herself with negativity that makes for a long day.
What are your two strengths and what is your weakness? My two greatest strengths are my communication and problem solving skills. I excel at understanding customer needs and motivations, and using this insight to tailor selling points, to understand potential obstacles, and to devise effective solutions. My greatest weakness has been the difficult I have in declining additional work assignments.
Tyne’s article starts out broad and then narrows in on each learning style. Tyne gives examples of the strengths and weaknesses of people with each of the three learning styles and encourages parents to identify their child’s learning style. LSSU is half as long as Tyne’s article. “Kinaesthetic, Auditory, and Visual Learning Styles for Children” is written in a more persuasive manner. Opposed to “What Learning Style Does Your Student Use?” which is more expository article.
That’s why as a teacher, simulations, guidance, and practice are important for this kind of students – especially in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education. Why are simulations, guidance, and practice important for kinesthetic learners? One reason, in particular, involves their thinking ability. To put it a different way, using simulations and practices in class increases students critical thinking ability which is the main goal of helping student transition into active learners according to Concordia
Good listener: The ability to listen when others are talking is another strength that I
Study Skills D NO: L0033AHAAHA0817 FULL NAME: ELMEHDI SDIRA 19/10/2017 There are a lot of skills needed to achieve good grades and to have an excellent academic level. In order to be successful, students need good study skills.
The Seven Learning Styles. Visual (spatial):You prefer using pictures, images, and spatial understanding. Aural (auditory-musical): You prefer using sound and music. Verbal (linguistic): You prefer using words, both in speech and writing. Physical (kinesthetic): You prefer using your body, hands and sense of touch.
Strengths: As a student one of my strengths is organization. I can say I can keep my school materials and notebooks organized in a way that I and others can comprehend. The reason I can say I am organized is because, I have hardly ever had in the past or present any issues with trying to find homework or assignments because I always kept my materials for each class organized and in a place I could easily find. Another strength I have is social skills. I can believe that I communicate with others well in a group.
