Career and College Research Paper A veterinary career isn’t a goal easily met, nor quickly met; but I know few people can say they love what they do, and the hurdles I’ll have to face are worth getting to be one of those people. Veterinarians come into work everyday, whether that be a clinic, farm, or lab, treating and diagnosing medical conditions in animals. Depending on the type of veterinarian, this can range from household pets to exotic or endangered species. This is something I’ve imagined working towards since I was able to comprehend what a career was, and I’ve only gotten more determined. Working with frightened pets and nervous owners requires compassion and patience. And they can’t expect everyone to meet their positive attitude with one of their own. This is where dedication to the job is important. Without a true desire to want to help animals, no matter what the difficulties, it will a hard life to love. Preparing for these things doesn’t have to happen all at once, or after graduation. Volunteering and working in clinics in highschool, as well as interning in college helps tremendously with knowing what to expect when finally joining the workforce. A career in veterinary medicine isn’t achieved in a short amount of time, and finding a good college to spend a minimum of 8 years isn’t a decision to be taken lightly. Oklahoma State University (OSU.) is a 4 year university and veterinary college in Stillwater, Oklahoma. In-state tuition is $8,321 and cost of attendance is around $21,921. For some this can be difficult to meet, however it’s not an impossible hurdle to face, 89% of students at OSU receive financial aid, 82% receive grant aid; and 42% take out student loans. Of these, a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) and maintaining a spot within the top 33% of their high school class is simplest to achieve. Another qualification for assured admission is to not only have a 3.0 GPA but score at least a 21 on the ACT. Students who do not have a grade point average or a class rank can also qualify by making at least a 24 on the ACT. In order to to progress education to veterinary school students will have to maintain at least a 2.8 GPA, a minimum grade of a C in all core classes, as well as 60 credited hours from an accredited university. However, when entering the dental program, students are required to have a GPA of 2.75 at least to even enroll in the program. But, on top of that all applications are required to be turned in by January 31 of that year. From there the application will be looked over by the Selection Committee for Dental Hygiene. After the Selection Committee approves the application a criminal record check is then ran. A student must then take a physical and dental examination and must have an acceptable health status.

Like most careers; however, you will need to graduate college and complete your test for your license. To start, you will need to find a college or university near you that offers an associates program in Veterinary Technology, complete the steps of enrollment, and begin your classes. Typical programs last as long as two years including your externship. You will be taking classes such as anatomy and physiology, microbiology, small and large animal husbandry, animal life science, veterinary medical terminology, etc. You will also be taking the basic college courses offered such as college math, ethics, oral and written communication, and more.
There are over 200 programs that are accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Core veterinary courses include animal behavior, health, disease and pharmacology. Basic classes are offered in clinical practices, ethical guidelines and veterinary clinic management. Most programs require that students complete 15 to 20 hours of observation and hands-on training at a local veterinary clinic or facility. Animals have been an important part of my life and hold a special place in my heart. Being a veterinary technician has many roles, perks, and responsibilities. Being a veterinary technician requires schooling/training and it also comes with good benefits and well pay. I love working and being around animals.
The typical work environment is a private clinic, animal hospital, laboratories, rescue leagues, boarding kennels, animal shelters, and zoos. Some of a veterinary technician’s jobs might be emotionally and physically challenging
I interviewed holly who is a small animal veterinarian that works in Mankato, Minnesota. The clinic is a medium sized with two full time vets and two, soon to be 3, part time vets. Most of the vets have lots of field experience in a clinic with them graduating from 2010 to 1997. Holly is the most recently added Veterinarian and has been working there for two and a half years. Her schooling first started with an AA degree at a community college and then went to a 4 year with another four years in vet school.
A zoologist, wildlife rehabilitator, and veterinary technician are professions similar to being veterinarian. All of these careers aid animal and would require a scientific background. Zoologist analyze the behavior habitats of wildlife. Wildlife rehabilitators nurse severely injured animals back to a health stay or take care endanger animals. A Veterinary technician
21 years later, I am proud to be the first member of my family to attend college. The experiences I have gained along my transition from a curious youth in Stockton, California to an undergraduate preparing for graduate school have afforded me a unique outlook on life. My hopes are to contribute my perspective to the diversifying researcher community. Looking back, my motivation to pursue research truly began in Stockton while volunteering with demented elderly individuals at a nursing home.

I intend on being more than a dog and cat veterinarian; I desire to help those animals, along with others, such as those found on farms, in zoos, or even in wildlife sanctuaries. I also want to do more than just serve animals; I want to change the veterinary medicine field by creating new and more effective medicines and curing diseases and disorders that are uncured in today’s world. Once I become very successful and financially stable, I would like to help up and coming veterinarians like myself. I want to create my own non-profit organization dedicating to helping those ambitious and creative kids support their dreams financially, and obtain mentors and job shadowing opportunities to encourage them and properly prepare them for their future careers.
