Response to Viewing a KKK Uniform At The Civil Rights Institute Ashley M. Jones is an excellent poet, her book Magic City Gospel is full of imagery and feeling. Most of the poems throughout give the audience a good impression of the pride she feels about Alabama and some of its culture. However, she also feels another type of way to some of the bad culture and history riddled and woven into Alabama’s core. One can feel her emotion as she speaks about a certain object inside of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. In Ms. Jones’s poem, “Viewing a KKK Uniform At The Civil Rights Institute”, she voices the haunting ghost of a feeling the uniform gives her. The title of her poem is ironic, Jones is visiting a civil rights museum but there is a KKK uniform there, set on display with its empty and dirty holes for eyes. One would think that while yes, the uniform is part of civil rights history, it would be one of the last things people would put on display at a civil rights museum. …show more content…
Through her word choices the audience can feel the sheer emotion filling into her as she stood in front of this old monster. In the poem Jones says, “Behind the glass, it seems frozen, waiting for summer night to melt it into action, for the clean white flame of God to awaken its limbs. In front of it, you are dwarfed” (lines 11-17). She speaks of this old white hood and sheet like it is a monster, sleeping, waiting for the opportune time to come alive and relive its sins. Alfred M. Green Speech Analysis In the 1860’s, Alfred M. Green gave a speech in Philadelphia regarding the Civil War. Green speaks about how African Americans are treated in a poor manner not only in the Southern region, but in the Northern region too. This speech that he delivered was chiefly intended to recruit fellow African Americans to join Union forces and fight for their freedom, even though African Americans were not allowed to join the Union army at this time. In this speech, Alfred M. Green uses a variety of appeals, schemes, and tropes to encourage his audience to participate and fight in the battle.
This paper will examine the interview of General Washington Dukes, or his nickname Wash Dukes. This interview took place in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. This paper will also describe his as a slave and the difficulties he faced. His story will explain the hardships slaves endured before and after the Civil war. This paper argues that slaves were not free before and after the civil war as a result they could not make their own decisions and vote during the early 1900’s.
Warriors Don’t Cry by Melba Pattilo Beals is a memoir about Beals experiences and her journey while integrating Little Rocks Central High School. She wanted to share her story about what it was like to grow up in the middle of the civil rights movement and what it was like to be one of the nine students who were the first African Americans to integrate a public all white school. During and after reading the book a few thoughts went through my head. First, was my reaction at the horrific things that were done to Melba by integrationist in Central High. For example, while in the bathroom stall a group of girls locked her in and began dumping paper that was light on fire onto her.
Jim Crow was not a person, it was a series of laws that imposed legal segregation between white Americans and African Americans in the American South. It promoting the status “Separate but Equal”, but for the African American community that was not the case. African Americans were continuously ridiculed, and were treated as inferiors. Although slavery was abolished in 1865, the legal segregation of white Americans and African Americans was still a continuing controversial subject and was extended for almost a hundred years (abolished in 1964). Turning Points are often when something unexpected or something you can’t control happens in your life. The texts that concluded this idea was the Autobiography “ Warriors Don’t Cry’’ by Melba Pattillo Beals, the poem The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost, and the Drama excerpt “Dragonwings”by Lawrence Yep. Melba Pattillo Beals, The Main Character of The Road Not Taken, and Moonshadow all faced life changing experiences, that changed a big part of their lives. “Warriors Don’t Cry’’ by Melba Pattillo Beals is an Autobiography about how Melba Pattillo Beals was being escorted to go to school by fifty uniformed soldiers because of the color of her skin. The Turning Point that Melba faced, was when she was walking up the steps into Central High school were angry segregationist mobs had forbidden her and other students to go.
Such personification mirrors Dunbar’s use of figurative language, which relates the poems in more ways than one. Dunbar touches on human features such as cheeks and eyes in his poem but also uses a spiritual element to advance his point of view. Furthermore, “We Wear the Mask” was written in 1896; a period in American history that was post-slavery but still had widespread discrimination. The spiritual connotation within Dunbar’s poem can allude to African American churches and/or the hymns slaves sung on plantations. Alfred M. Green: Rhetorical Analysis In April of 1861, the first month of the Civil War, an African American man named Alfred M. Green delivered a speech in favor of African American men joining the Union army. During this time period, African American men were still not able to enlist in the army. However, Green believed that it was still essential towards the Union army’s victory, and towards their freedom and rights as African American individuals. By using the rhetorical strategies logos, ethos, and pathos, he notifies the audience of what they can accomplish, creates trust and unity, and inspires them by describing the possibility of change for the future.
Alfred M. Green delivered his speech in Philadelphia in April of 1861, the first month of the Civil War. The Union and Confederate were fighting, North against South, to abolish slavery. Green wanted his fellow African Americans to join the fight, even though they weren’t allowed to. He was a very religious and educated man who was able to turn words into grand speeches. The audience are African American males who don’t have the right to vote, but are now free men.
After watching her father fight hard for a case he was bound to loose, hearing all the mean names her family and Tom was called and hearing the news of Tom’s death she began to understand the reality of racism. “Just what I said. Grandma says it's bad enough he lets you all run wild, but now he's turned out a nigger-lover we'll never be able to walk the streets of Maycomb agin. He's ruinin' the family, that's what he's doin'.” (Lee, 110)
“Incident” by Natasha Tretheway brings to life the horrors African Americans faced during the time the Ku Klux Klan was rampant in the United States. Fear and secretiveness was an everyday part of African American lives. They were unable to live like white Americans were due to the racism they faced. This poem, however, symbolizes the idea that life continues through the fear of it crumbling. The narrator is still alive to tell his or her story; therefore, this is evidence that life continues.
Visiting museums is always fun for many people, especially when you are a little kid. You get to see all kinds of different historical works done by the people from the past and present. I recently haven’t been to any museums since I was little, until I got to visit one for this course. For this Action Research Project Paper, I visited Dallas Freedman’s Memorial located in Dallas, Texas. Dallas Freedman’s Memorial is one of the most beautiful museums and quite depressing at the same time.
Capitalization and Pronouns Gwendolyn Brooks employs the use of capitalization and pronouns in her poem “A Bronzeville Mother Loiters in Mississippi. Meanwhile a Mississippi Mother Burns Bacon” as a way to demonstrate the tensions between white femininity and black masculinity in the south during the era directly preceding the Civil Rights Movement. During this time, the white man was afforded the ability to dominate over the word of white women and black men. Throughout this poem, Brooks portrays the complex dimensions that race and gender played in the murder of Emmett Till.
In order to change history, people must learn from their mistakes. Segregation in North America has been a big issue in North America that unfortunately still happens in the world today, however, it is not as bad as it once was. In the poem “History Lesson” by Natasha Trethewey, the author uses mood, symbolism and imagery to describe the racial segregation coloured people faced in the past compared to more recent times, where equality is improved and celebrated. The author uses language and setting to influence the mood and meaning of the poem.
When we auricularly discern a piece of music for my last research paper I mentally conceived long and arduous about what topic I authentically want to take. With that in mind, I have come to the end that the issue that I would relish to cull underneath the section of history. In our American history, we possess a bunch to play with. As an African American male I cerebrate culling the civil rights kineticism definitely is something that is proximate and dear to my affection. The civil rights kineticism was not just any marginally adrift.
The poem I chose to analyze is We Wear the Mask, written by Paul Lawrence Dunbar in 1896. Its theme is about hiding our true feelings and emotions, and lying about who we are. When looking at Dunbar’s life history, and the political context at the time, we understand that he efficiently uses this theme in order to talk about how black people have to hide how they feel about their social status and the treatment they receive from white people. He conveys the theme to the audience thanks to a clever word choice. Indeed, he talks about “grin” and “smile”, using facial expressions as a description of the mask (Dunbar, lines 1 & 4).
