The War of 1812 was the first war officially declared by Congress. This was the war that inspired Francis Scott Key to write the Star-Spangled Banner. Because of the War of 1812, the U.S.A. was able to secure its independence and have its national anthem written, even though it did not become the national anthem for a few more years. The War of 1812 was a very influential war to American history. According to Andrew Wright, “2500 American troops and 800 British soldiers fought a classic battle in linear formation.” Fighting in a linear formation is one of the fastest ways to end a battle, but not the most efficient. Because the USA had more people, they risked a linear battle and the British were gentleman-like and proper, so they fought like that a lot. But it would have been more effective if the US soldiers ambushed because then they would have most likely lost less lives. One type of battle strategy of the US was a “bend but do not break” strategy. This strategy was to force the British ships into kill zones in the area around Fort McHenry. One type of battle strategy of Britain was to surround North Point on land and sea so they could not escape (The Campaign for the National Museum of the United States Army). won the War of 1812 won because they were able to take control of the Great Lakes with their navy and beat back the British because their boats were more maneuverable than the ships of the British. This made sure the British had to find a new way to get control of the U.S. The U.S. was also able to win because they held out against the British during the Battle of Baltimore, and in doing so, inspired Francis Scott Key to publish the Star-Spangled Banner. The final battle to secure independence was when the U.S. beat the British at the Battle of Plattsburg at Lake Champlain (History.com). The U.S and Britain held peace negotiations in Belgium and officially ended the war on December 24, 1814 by signing the Treaty of
The British soldiers outnumbered The American soldiers by a lot. The british had a ton of ammunition to fight. The americans had little ammunitions so that's how they new their chances of winning was very slim because the british had more supplies than they did. The Before the battle started The americans were warned that they were coming so they started preparing weeks in advance.
Battle of Yorktown Dates and Conflict In the fall of 1781, on September 26th, General George Washington and his army of 7,800 Frenchmen, 3,100 militiamen and 8,000 Continentals amassed on the northern end of the Chesapeake Bay along with a large supply of artillery and siege weaponry. Two days later on the 28th, Washington and his army descended out of Williamsburg and began to surround Yorktown. The bulk of the American troops positioned themselves along the right hand side of the battle with the majority of the French troops emplacing themselves on the left. General Cornwallis commanded his troops emplaced in a networks of redoubts and batteries that were linked by earthworks by Gloucester Point (The Battle of Yorktown).
In the later months of the Revolutionary War, Cornwallis marched the British forces through the backcountry of North Carolina to intercept General Nathaniel Greene and the patriot troops. Soon the Battle of Cowan’s Ford started But General Greene didn’t want a full scale battle so he tricked the british troops with his “fight-and-retreat” tactic. (The fight and retreat tactic is where In the heat and muddle of a battle, the army would pretend to be defeated, exhausted and confused, and would suddenly retreat from the battlefield. This was used partly as a defeat in detail tactic to allow the troops to defeat larger armies by breaking them into smaller groups.)
All these strategies, advantages, and disadvantages are just some of the reasons why the British were successful in their attack. As a result, the British were able to burn the Capitol, the White House, the Library of Congress, the War Office, and the Navy Yard in their attack. However, after the British were victorious the British made efforts to be respectful with their treatment of the locals. Admiral Cockburn and General Ross followed strict rules of engagement and did not destroy any private property; they said: “Their war was with the government
While John Adams was president he was faced with a problem, American ships were getting taken and the sailors were not safe. Earlier the Americans had a problem where the British would not leave the Ohio River Valley, because of this problem the American’s chief justice was sent to Britain to propose a peace treaty, the Jay treaty. This treaty proved successful and in this treaty Britain pulled their troops from the Ohio Valley. The French considered this to be an act of betrayal and attacked the Americans. To end these attacks, three representatives were sent from America to France.
With the difference in troops one would assume the British were slaughtered however, the British won the Battle of Camden. The “Southern Strategy” helped promote man power, support, and knowledge of area for the British. The British defeated the Continental Army purely based upon poor leadership, poor strategy and inexperience. To begin with, the Continental Army had, to this point, been victorious in both New York
Will L. 7D Dec, 2017 HOW THE AMERICANS WON THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR How did the scrub-like Americans defeat the strong, organized British army? The two main advantages that helped the colonists win the Revolutionary War were geography, and war tactics. The American Revolutionary War was a war fought on American soil between Britain and the thirteen colonies. The Royal army consisted of nearly 50,000 regular troops.
The British had been preparing for a long time and were prepared for anything that came. So they sent a small group in straight ahead. Then, the rest of the army flanked from the back side and caught the United States majorly off guard (“The Battle Of
The location of the colonial militias, concentrated near the North Bridge, was decided in advance. The Patriots thoughtfully planned an ambush on the British, therefore, they were the
The War of 1812 involved three wars that were fought on separate fronts. Although America lost the war for Canada in the North, they won the western and southern war and the final war, the Battle of New Orleans under the leadership of the “war hero”, Andrew Jackson. Wrapping up the War of 1812 with the signing of the peace treaty in Belgium, in 1814, the British finally decides that the war with America just wasn’t worth it anymore. The end result was a negotiation between the U.S. and the British delegates. Each side drop demands one by one until the delegates agree to end the war officially.
The British soldiers were highly trained in using bayonets to fight, so in this type of battle, they would have the advantage. Although the Continental Army did fight using linear tactics, they used different tactics early on in the war. Some may call it cheating, others label it as “Guerilla warfare”, but either way it was a smart tactic to use. The Americans had knowledge of the land and used the geography of the land to their advantage when possible. This type of tactic was usually used by Gen. Washington’s frontier fighters, they would hide amongst the trees and shoot the Native American scouts leading troops, the British Commanders who road on horseback, then British soldiers who
The United States of America has gained its independence about 2 centuries ago. The American’s achieved victory over Britain since they had a patriot spirit, allies, fighting skills and had a great experience with geography. The patriot spirit towards Americans that fought since they inspired many different types of groups and soldiers were fighting for things they cared about. Different types of groups such as racial, social classes and minority groups.
The Revolutionary War is perhaps one of the most important pieces of America’s past. It has helped to shape this country into what it is today. If this event had not taken place, this country would likely not be here, or in the conditions it is in. Freedom, government, and pride are just a few of the many effects of the Revolutionary War. One major reason that the Revolutionary War is important is that the victory of the war meant independence for the colonies.
There is one war that the United States of America gained independence from and after that this country was not only a country but a nation united as one. The American Revolution was this war and it had a huge impact on shaping this country. This war lasted from April 19, 1775 through September 3, 1783. Throughout all these years there were many up and downs and some tragic loses, but America pulled through and fought strong and proud. During this time many battles were fought causing the victory of the United States.
This type of fighting was not none to the British. They used small groups to ambush the unexpected British military. They learned this for the Native Americans but they also used the British style of fighting as well. The used the French troops to attach from sea while the American troop attacked from land in Yorktown. They stole food and supplies from the British because funding was not efficient enough.
