As more products were shipped to Rome pirates started to steal more and more items making stores go out of business back on the mainland. High tariffs were placed on imported goods in a desperate attempt to get money flowing back into Rome. Furthermore the lack of new conquests also instigated the decrease of money flow into Rome because they were not stealing gold. The gold content in coins also started to decrease along with the amount of coins produced. Inflation was one of the causes of this. People started to barter as a result of less money. This loss of population made it hard to find laborers and soldiers for war. This caused the empire to pay Germanic soldiers to fight for them. The need to pay for troops created a large debt for the Romans. Another reason that led to the decline of the Roman Empire was their water source coming in through lead pipes. The Roman Empire is argued to have fell in 476 AD, due to the Eastern Empire still hadn’t fell until 476
Well here is where the theory excess military spending comes into place. In order to maintain their big army and protect the large empire from all the other enemies the Romans are starting to use all their money on their military and raising all their taxes to get enough money for the payments of the army. They would gradually lose all their money that could have helped to improve their technology or produce more food. Moreover the military aren’t just there to protect the empire. They are there to take over more land for the emperor to expand their power and their religion.
There were several problems. They faced massive immigration from Germanic tribes in the northwest, payment for civil jobs had not kept up with inflation, there was no efficient and reliable system for communication over great distances. A substantial number of wealthy and powerful citizens were abandoning the western half of the empire and moving to the larger cities in the east, and many powerful families in the west were leaving the cities and retiring to private estates in the

At its pinnacle, the Roman Empire had ruled gargantuan empire, with different classes, histories, and cultures. These differences caused disloyalty within its provinces, rebellion, and eventually, the fall of Rome. One reason for the decline of the Roman economy was military overspending which left little money for important activities such as providing housing and maintaining public roads and buildings. Another reason is that as Rome stopped conquering new lands and decreased trade, the flow of gold into the economy decreased causing salaries to be paid in food or clothing rather than money. Many Roman people began to buy items from slave owners rather than farmers because the slave owners’ items were cheaper. The farmers who did not own slaves could not compete with the prices and they were forced to sell their land and live on the streets since there were limited job opportunities in Rome at the time. Meanwhile, the Han had a weakening government that was not able to ensure taxes were collected, making them unable to collect enough tax revenue to fund the court and support the army.
