When you ask a non American “What does America mean to you?”, they will more often than not answer with hamburgers, obesity, NFL and Reality TV. That is okay because who doesn 't love hamburgers and football filled Sundays, who doesn 't love watching silly reality TV shows and who doesn 't love a cheat day every once in awhile? Those people are judging a book by its cover and fortunately for me… well my thoughts about America are quite different. When an individual asks me “What does America mean to you?”, I immediately think of three words, freedom, love and family. The most important right someone can have in this world is freedom and luckily for americans we have the luxury of freedom all the time. America has the freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly and petition, the freedoms I just listed are only a few that America are known for. Sadly for other countries, most of them do not allow freedom at all. Without love America would not be the country that it is, we would not cherish our luxuries, we would not care about our country as a whole and we certainly would not be as successful as we are. Americans have a lot of love and passion for our country, we have more passion for our country than we do for our Sunday football, which you could say is a lot. Love is something that you cannot fake, love is something that you genuinely care about and with love comes positive actions. We show our love to America by joining the army, voting for positive positive people to represent America, working and we sing our national anthem proudly while looking at our flag passionately. This country is great for many reason, despite its hardships. One of the many reasons is that we have freedom to chose, freedom of religion, and freedom of speech. We are also a melting pot for many different ethnicity. Being an American is about the freedom we here enjoy. We are full of different ethnicity and cultures.
Nonetheless, I believe that to be an American means to have freedom, equality, and knowledge.
What does it mean to you to be an American? The word itself is very broad when it comes to describing those who live in America. To me, being American means have access to multiple resources and having rights, though there are some misconceptions. Many people view Americans as obese and lazy. On May 16,2017 I interviewed Karina Salgado about what it means to be American to her. She is currently a preschool teacher at Acacia Tree Preschool here in Anaheim, but she also is studying to get her associate degree to become an elementary teacher. Karina stated throughout the interview that she's proud to call herself a chicana instead of an actual American. She also stated that she is the oldest of three and that her parents are both Mexican. Karina made some clear points towards the question of what it means to be american.
I am an American. I choose this word to represent me, although others may not acquiesce and won’t categorize individuals who aren’t born in this country to be Americans. In others perspective, to be an American means to have the blood of an American. But I on the other hand, don’t have the heritage and the qualifications that are expected of me to be an American but that is the word that I have chosen to describe myself regardless. The definition of what it means to be an American is debatable and varies from each person.

Can you imagine feeling as patriotic about a country other than one in which you were born? I believe that it depends on the person. For example, some people who leave in U.S still do not feel like they belong here while some instantly make connection with America and American life style. Some people see it as shameful to live in such a cruel country, some are proud to be a part of something that is constantly evolving, there are endless feelings towards America and all are found in the people of this country.
