The discovery I chose was Brunelleschi's dome for Florence's cathedral. I love architecture and learning more about the history of the art. That is why I chose this topic. A little background about the Cathedral itself; the building was built to be an architectural masterpiece. So, the cathedral was planned to have a massive dome measuring 150 ft across and beginning at a height of 180 ft. The overseers built the entire building except for the dome, because they had no idea how to accomplish the feat. They ended up making a sort of “competition” with a reward of 200 gold florins to the person who could come up with a good plan. It was very interesting to me that Brunelleschi was a goldsmith (who had also tinkered in multiple different crafts)
The biblical story of David is represented in two different styles of art due to time period. The stories being told differ because of the impression they’re trying to make on the people of their time period. The statue of David by Michelangelo is a representation of the uplifting of the city and it’s political views. The High Renaissance Era was a very political time, so Michelangelo portrayed the . In the Italian Baroque Era, art focuses on movement, determination, and tension.
The Amity dome was a large structure made of wood and glass. It measured feet tall and feet around and the crew only just managed to complete it on the morning it was needed for filming. Prosthetics make-up artist Margie
1. They used undisguised natural materials from the local environment, such as redwood, cedar, and oak, as well as brick and stone (or as Maybeck often put it, they employed “open use of natural materials, honestly stated”). 2.They combined historic motifs, such as Gothic arches or Palladian windows, and traditional craftsmanship, with modern building materials and construction methods, such as reinforced concrete, asbestos siding and plate glass windows. 3. Each building was a unique design in itself, an original work of art that fulfilled the specific needs of the client, and the community it was a part of. 4.
but how it was constructed. Brunelleschi traveled with Donatello to Rome where he studied architecture and sculpture. Brunelleschi was infatuated with the construction of the Pantheon, and especially the dome that sat on top. When Brunelleschi returned to Florence, he tackled the problem that faced the people of Florence. The unfinished
The building was 200 ft tall, and the façade was excessively ornamented in a beautiful way, and in a mixture of different styles including Gothic, Baroque, Churrigueresque to illustrate the appearance of a Spanish Colonial church. The facade was made of stone, and it did not include usual ornamentation, but sculpted historical figures of remarkable and significant people mostly were
Example of sprezzatura because it looks like it was effortless but took a great amount of work. Brunelleschi’s Dome was designed and planned out by Filipino Brunelleschi in 1420. Brunelleschi had entered in a design competition in order to build a dome for the Florence Cathedral. He produced the winning design and soon his reputation had flourished. In total it had took him about sixteen years to complete the entire dome.
I chose to study the discovery of Uranus by William Hershcel in 1781. He start out as an amateur astronomer. He was born to a family of musicians, and actually made a living with music. In his spare time, he built telescopes that far surpassed those that were used by professionals in the day. He spent a lot of time studying the moon and other known planets for extraterrestrial life.
Brunelleschi was one of the leading architecture during this time, and was famous for designing the dome (Pazzi Chapel). The chapel is rectangular layout containing one square room, covered by an umbrella dome. The design is very similar to the Old Sacristy; Brunelleschi creates semi circle arches above all four ways in the square room to be able to support the hemispherical dome (Clinton, 30). The dome is decorated with round sculptors with the Pazzi code or arm made of glass terracotta (Pazzi
(Yaari, 2008) The construction of the arch itself is classical. Using glass pillars and pediments to create an arch. Here they have taken two classical architectural elements and combined them by supplementing the arch with pillars and pediments. (Bofill,
According to some legend, Tsar Ivan gave an order to either blind or cut off all architects head to prevent them from creating a similar masterpiece in futre. Some historians believed that it was built by two architects Brma and Postnik . the other part of them believed that it was the same person but with distinct nickname.
I chose to research about William Herschel, and how he discovered Uranus. It is very interesting to start out with, because I first studied about William Herschel himself and before he started he was a musician, then later in his life he had an interest in astronomy, so he switched later on in life to study astronomy.. He decided to build a huge telescope to look at the stars. He was very interested in with how light reacted with the eye and said “the eye is one of the most extraordinary organs.” With his telescope he isolated double stars so he could measure the stellar parallax.
The discovery I chose to research is the “Discovery of Uranus by William Hershcel in 1781”. Learning about the planets and the universe is one of my favorite things especially because I feel closer to the spirit. Herschel was looking through his telescope hoping to find double stars. Instead, he found what he thought was a comet. Through years of studying and mathematical proof, he found that the so-called “comet” was actually Uranus, a new planet.
Because of my interest in Astronomy, I have picked "Astronomy: Discovery of Uranus by William Herschel in 1781". It was very educational for me to see, how the process of science worked in this particular case, and why it is so important for observations shared and discoveries to be replicated by others. I have based my observations on the work by Simon Schaffer, St. John 's College, Cambridge called "URANUS and the establishment of Herschel 's astronomy". Below is a breakdown of the assignment questions: What was the motivation that led to this discovery? William Herschel was only an amateur astronomer and at that time having a royal patronage was everything.
The great Dome of Santa Maria del Fiore, erected by Filippo Brunelleschi remains one of the wonders of Renaissance architecture. Along with the Cathedral’s dome, Brunelleschi was known for his magnificent inventions and arcthecural designs. In the process of marking his legacy, Brunelleschi was challenged socially and politically by rival artist and patrons of his time. Despite countless obstacles, Brunelleschi was a man that thrives in challenging situations. The secretive nature of Brunelleschi had made both his personal life and the engineering of the dome a mystery.
I decided to do some research on the Apollo 11 lunar landing. To me it represented more than a scientific feat, it was evidence that nothing is impossible. The team of 3 men (Commander Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Mike Collins), all had different roles, and they worked together to accomplish something that had never been done before. After Armstrong and Aldrin landed, they set to work. During the time they spent on the lunar surface, they took samples of moon rocks, performed experiments, and took photographs.
