First off is the differences in social structure between the North and South. During the 1800’s, from about 1830 to 1870, the abolitionist movement North was to abolish slavery and put an end to racial inequity. This ties in with the sole cause of civil war because the opposition to slavery in the North and South created an uprising or conflicts between the North and South. The reason why slavery is considered the sole cause because everything ties back to slavery as seen here. Southern slaveholders decided to fight the Northern union as they believed in black emancipation. Secondly, slavery was a way of life in the South. They believed that slavery wasn’t wrong and that black people were just animals or products. They traded them and sold them, some even enlisted their slaves in the Civil War. …show more content…
Slave owners was actually a very small number of people in the South, statistically 20% of families owned slaves. The reasoning for this is because those who owned slaves were wealthy and had power. Even if you did not own slaves, most still supported it. The main reason slavery was supported so greatly in the South was because the social system was so based around plantation and agriculture. “If a small farmer had extra produce or livestock for sale, his market was composed of the plantations and the middle-class professionals of the towns who served the interests of the planters. If a small farmer or a middle-class professional needed to borrow money, he had to borrow it from a planter or from a bank that was likely to be owned by planters (geosc).” The social system of the South was based off of this and the labor system was through slaves. If slavery was to go extinct, so would the wealth of slave owners. As well the society would have no power and would be
North and south civil war While both sides fought the civil war over the issue of slavery, the North had fought for more moral reasons, while the South fought to preserve its own institutions. I will be writing about this as my topic and explain how it started, who were involved and what were the reasons, etc. The civil war was the most historical event in all of the world and at a site I found and used it says “While the Revolution of 1776-1783 created the United States, the Civil War of 1861-1865 determined what kind of nation it would be.” Meaning that the civil war was the changing point in the country in this era. It was the north and the south fighting over slavery and institutional reasons too.
Southern states believed that it was their divine right to own slaves. The deep south “daily living” contributed to the expansion of slavery (204). Rothman throughout his book explains this and specifically on pg. 21 he talks about life as a slave. He explains how smuggling of slaves, kidnapping of free people, and slave coffles trekking provided way for growth of slavery and growth of antislavery opinions in the North.
In the mid-nineteenth century conflicts over the institution of slavery caused the Civil War between the North and the South. In the North slavery was viewed as a inhumane act and it violated human rights. In the South it was vital to their economic and social developments. These conflict had to be solved by the government and political figures. The main causes appeared out of the political conflict in the government of the states in the union.
The Southern states utilized slaves to work their large plantations and to perform other work. Oftentimes, slaves were traded, rented, or sold to pay off debts, thus being treated like objects or property by the slaveowners (Document G). This demonstrates how the slaves dealt with injustice and discrimination while under the white man 's control. Although the Union disagreed with the Confederacy’s use of slavery, 12% of slaves lived in the border states of the North and the South (Document B). While the North had no slaves, the South owned 3,500,000.
Back then, it was near impossible to imagine the North and South getting along considering they were polar opposites. At this time in history, the South was largely a plantation and agricultural economy with a slow rising population. The North, on the other hand, heartily embraced an industrial economy and the population was tremendous. The United States was essentially two separate nations forced to coexist as one. It was the infringement on states’ rights and collapse of the two party system, that made the disagreements between the North and the South nearly impossible to solve and made the Civil war inevitable.
Most of the cash crops in the South were cotton and tobacco. They believed that because of the African American’s unique color, they were different and therefore does not give them human rights. They passed the ⅗ Compromise which only counted ⅗ African Americans citizens. If they were to count the African Americans as people, they would most likely be close to even with the Northern states. The Northern states were abolitionists which meant that they were against slavery.
Before the American Civil War, we struggled with the concept of slavery based on our economic and moral differences. People who lived in the North believed that slavery should be abolished since they did not grow crops that needed an abundance of slaves. Moreover, they thought that slaves should be treated like all human beings based on the constitution. On the other side, Americans who lived in the South thought slavery should not be abolished as their crops demanded twice as much work than the ones in the North; therefore, they needed much more workers working in their field and that’s where slaves came into view. They also thought that Africans were inferior because of their skin color and origin.
Otherwise the country was going to “perish”. The south’s perspective was that slaves were needed to maintain things. On plantations, slaves picked cotton which was a big money maker for southerners. Those who lived in the south thought they were defending their way of life. Northerners had morals, and could grasp the concept that it was wrong to violate the rights of these men and women no matter what they looked like.
When people are born into a family or town where there is slavery, they are taught that and only that, which makes them think that it is right. Then these people have kids and teach the the same thing, eventually turning into a ton of people believing in slavery. One of the most important disputes the North and South had was westward expansion. No one could figure out how to keep the amount of free and slave states equal. The two tried to keep it as equal as they could for a long time, but it got too out of hand.
Everyone knows what a slave is, its a person who is being held against their will and forced to do a task without payment or able to exercise their freedom. Back then in a America, before equal rights. Before the civil war, that at least gave the slaves the freedom to do as they please under the law. As we know from American history. Almost everyone, in the south and some supporters in the north believed that slavery was okay.
Slavery was a manner in which the which population were supervised and controlled; kept illiterate and unskilled as education meant that the black population could identify themselves as more than just cheap labour. White southerners were afraid that the black population would disrupt their social status and economy as the black population would be able to compete with poor whites for jobs and be on an equal base with them. The abolishment of slavery aroused a sense of fear amongst the white southerners as they were scared the black slaves would massacre their families, insurrection as seen in Richmond in the 1800 and eventually start a war . Another reason for the secession was not only motivated the belief that blacks wear inferior to the white race, the economy of the Deep South was also a huge
Imagine if the cotton businesses had no slaves the Southerners would have to create their own factories, for example, if they did have to create their own industry, they would have to sell all their slaves and that’s one of the last things that they wanted to do. If the South had no slaves, they would have to do everything all by themselves. According to page 242 it says " planters would have had to sell slaves to raise the money to build factories, most wealthy southerners had their wealth invested in land and slaves. Planters would have had to sell slaves to raise the money to build factories. Most wealthy southerners were unwilling to do this.
In the antebellum south, social divisions were wide and equality was not in the hands of many. The South during these times is often viewed as a place filled with large estates where many slaves worked the land as the owners relaxed; however, this is not true. Large plantation owners made up only a small percent of the South's population. The owners of these plantations did not usually
Most were left unfed and if they disobeyed orders they were whipped and cruelly beaten. However, the most of the South didn 't see slavery as inhumane. To them slavery was needed, slaves were needed to help farm, as well as make profit for their owners. Slavery was seen as a source of
To a greater extent, slavery was the greatest cause of the outbreak of the civil war in 1860. Disputes of slavery caused economic and political troubles between the northern and southern states leading up to the civil war. The fact the the northern and southern states were different in almost every way caused them to turn out like completely different territories, one of their greatest differences was the fact that most southern states economy relied on hard labour, agricultural jobs like tobacco in Maryland, and cotton in Virginia; this caused their economy to be more based on the labour of slaves than the more developed territories in the north (Harrold), who after this time was starting to not need the slave labour in their territories because after early 1800’s, the industrial revolution had been spreading to America, and the country developed very quickly. But in this expansion, only the north states were getting the effect of the industrial revolution, meaning the north would not need slave
