Candidates campaigns consisted name calling, and lies to make the other party candidates look bad. Examples, Jackson's Mother being called a prostitute and his wife being accused of adultery. While Adams were being accused of turning his pool table and chess set into a gambling piece and furniture. In the election of 1828 about 60 percent of the the voter were eligible perception while in in 1824 election about 27 percent were eligible to vote. An outcome of grand increas of voters, was a grand increase of political realm of the nation. Although most individuals whom were granted the rights to vote saw it as extremely positive change in all aspects, there were few who viewed the concept of voting as chaotic concept , they stated that “The tendency of the universal suffrage is to jeopardize the rights of the property and the principles of liberty.” (Doc B) everyone have the right to
America entered into the Era of Good Feelings which was a time of one party rule and peace. Democratic Republicans ruled the national government and voters had to chose a candidate from this political party. Culturally America didn’t change as slavery still in the south, industry still in the north, and western lands are still unknown. However, Henry Clay’s American System created a compromise between all regions with Northern industry, Southern Slavery, and Western Farmers. Therefore, The Missouri compromise increased sectionalism and brought economic differences to each region of the United States.
Around the presidential election of 1824, the presidential candidates -John Quincy Adams, Henry Clay, and Andrew Jackson- took part in the “Corrupt Bargain”, an alliance made between Adams and Clay in order to secure Adams’ presidency. During the Electoral College, Jackson received 99 votes in front of Adams who received 84 votes, while Jackson did receive more votes, he had not gotten a majority of votes, so the House of Representatives were to choose the next president. The spokesman of the House of Representatives, Henry Clay, was to choose between the two candidates. Instead of choosing for the sake of the country, Clay chose to help himself, as Adams had offered him a position as the secretary of state. After Adams’ presidency was secured,
The Presidential Elections of both 1876 and 1896 were both very influential for the United States in their own ways. The 1896 Election focused around the prominent issue of silver coinage, and led to the votes being split between urban and rural areas. Where the 1876 election was particularly influential because it brought about what is known as the Compromise of 1877. Centered on differing issues, and led by political party leaders rather than the presidential candidates, both the election of 1876 and 1896 became influential for the United States.
The elections of 1824 and 1828 were the first to bring a new method of campaigning. These methods were brought to the political life in America by John Adams and Andrew Jackson. Their methods of campaigning were first spotted when Henry Clay and John Adams made an agreement to defeat Andrew Jackson. Adams was successfully elected president with the help of Henry Clay. Soon after the election, Adams was accused of making a ''corrupt bargain'', which was when Henry Clay convinced congress to elect Adams to assure his victory.
The presidential campaign of 1828 was the dawn of modern politics for the United States. Towards the election of 1828, the election process had changed in numerous ways. New states such as Indiana, Alabama, and Mississippi wanted new settlers as Americans were expanding westward, so they made constitutions that eliminated landholding requirements for voting. In turn, older states revised their laws to keep citizens at home, resulting in 21 out of 24 states that had universal suffrage for white men. At this time, the notion that presidents had to be wealthy and well-educated was gone, and the new ideal as the head of America was “the common man”.
The creation of the United States is considered by many to be a great experiment in democracy. After the War of 1812, America was filled with tremendous nationalism and as the young country grew, many nations look to it as both an inspiration and a warning. Americans seemed united behind their president James Monroe, who was elected in 1816 and then ran uncontested for his second term in 1820. However, even during this time there were many discussions and arguments within the nation’s own government regarding the benefits of democracy.
But still Jackson was the most popular with the people and won the more electoral votes than anyone else (99). Adams that come in second placed with 84 votes they were to close each other that there was not clear majority, the election was thrown into the House of Representatives. Jackson lose that election because Henry Clay, Speaker of the House secure Adams victory. One conflict
Jackson portrayed himself as the “common man” president and connected with the electors. This was a pretty messy election because Jackson and Clay have been enemies for years. During the election of 1828, Andrew Jackson accuses Henry Clay of killing his wife. John Quincey Adams was running against Jackson and major accusations were being made about both running mates. Andrew Jackson claimed that Adams used tax payer money to buy gambling tools.
The founders of the United States did their best to create a government that would not allow erroneous decisions to greatly harm the nation. They set a percent of presidents being politically sound and well-known; their beliefs for how the nation should be handled were essential to their campaign. President Andrew Jackson, however, did not follow this system, instead winning primarily by his personality and popularity amongst the common American. While his actions in office often appeared to be for the people, most had a hidden selfish side to them that he easily covered up. With the election of 1828, Jackson radically changed American politics, focusing them more on public appearance and personal character than on intelligence and political views, making personality just as, if not more important than the actual politics of a political term.
American voters became more influential in presidential elections because of the events that took place during the Jacksonian and Progressive Eras. In the Jacksonian Era, some voting restrictions were removed, voting became more private, the public was more informed about politics, and voters were taken into greater consideration by presidential candidates. In the Progressive Era, better living conditions, the fight against corruption, and other political reforms made it easier for the working class to vote for candidates that they favored. These events gave voters a greater influence in politics and made elections more fair. During the Jacksonian Era, states began to give citizens a larger influence over presidential elections.
Patricia Totman Briefly explain how the Electoral College works. Do the most "popular" votes always decide the presidency? Do you think the Electoral College is the best way to elect the president? Discuss some alternatives to it (based on your research).
The Era of Good Feelings, beginning in 1816 with the election of James Monroe as president, directly followed the War of 1812, was a time of nationalism, hope and and confidence in the United States. However, in the shadow of this national pride, different areas of the country began to shift apart in different ways, opening the door to domestic tension. The Era of Good Feeling was both a time of economic growth and political change for the country. This was caused by a surge in nationalistic feelings throughout the United States, as well as growing sectional tensions. The War of 1812 made the American people feel as though they should be aggressive in foreign affairs, which led to the introduction of a protective tariff and the Monroe Doctrine.
When the year of 1807 came around, the way that America elected a president changed. In previous elections, only the rich men were able to vote which as a result whoever promised more the wealth was elected for president. When the common man was able to vote in 1807, the type of candidate to win the election change. As seen in the election of 1828 the person who was more relatable to the people, won because the common man was able to vote and so they used that opportunity and elected whoever they thought was going to help them. Overall the people preferred Jackson over Adams because Jackson was able to relate to the people better, and because he was a symbol of the American dream.
Political campaigns and elections in the United States changed dramatically between 1815 and 1840 due to large social and political changes, such as universal white male suffrage which caused caused more voters in the middle and lower classes, and the growth of the common man ideal which resulted in politicians that were voted into office based on their background rather than their actual political views and knowledge. The political changes that granted universal white male suffrage caused an increase in eligible voters (doc 1). This increase in eligible voters (mainly the middle class) led to a demand for politicians who were more inclined to push for legislation that would benefit the “common man”, this included topics such as child labor
The period between 1812 and 1840 was marked by significant changes in American politics. The War of 1812, the Missouri Compromise, and the rise of Andrew Jackson as a political figure all played a role in shaping the political landscape of the country during this time. These events led to a shift in power from the traditional elite to the common man, as well as an increased focus on issues of federal power and states' rights. Three factors that contributed to this change in American politics were the changing role of the federal government, the expansion of voting rights, and the rise of popular political movements.
