Today, more than two centuries after the final shots were fired, the American Revolution remains an inspiring story to not only Americans, but also to people all around the globe. However, the creation of the United States involved much more than the battles of the Revolutionary War. A very important man that served in this war goes by the name of George Washington, which becomes a very important figure in American history.
George Washington is perhaps the best known of all the Americans who helped create the United States. Yet as well - known as Washington's name is, his accomplishments are sometimes taken for granted today, more than two centuries after his death. George

Lawrence became an officer in the British army. When he returned, his war stories stimulated George's interest in military life. At age 14, with the encouragement of Lawrence, George realized he wanted to become a seaman's apprentice and travel the world as a sailor. George's mother, however, was opposed to her son leaving the family. Instead, she persuaded Lawrence to teach George the skills needed to become a surveyor. Lawrence had been infected with tuberculosis and died at Mount Vernon in July 1752.
In 1752, Robert Dinwiddie, the governor of Williamsburg, appointed George adjutant major of the militia for the southern district of Virginia. This was the person who was in charge
of training the militia. This was a role that required Washington to keep records of equipment and supervise the men as they went through military drills. In 1753, Dinwiddie named him adjutant major for the Northern Neck, a district closer to his

In November 1753, Washington and six other men set out on the 11 –day trip to Logstown. When he arrived at Fort Duquesne, he was treated courteously by the French troops, who sent for their general. At the meeting, Washington presented Dinwiddie's letter. While the French were discussing, Washington took notes and counted the soldiers. The French decided to not withdraw. Washington also brought back drawings, which he used to make a map of the area.
Dinwiddie quickly sent workers to build a fort when he got word the French were sending troops to the Ohio Valley. Unfortunately, the French troops arrived while the fort was still under construction, and the Virginians were greatly outnumbered. However, Washinton came up with a strategy that killed 10 French troops within minutes. Washington did not realize it but this brief fight was the first battle of what became the French and Indian War. Because Washington expected the French to counterattack, his men built a fort that he called Fort
In the book of His Excellency: George Washington by Joseph J. Ellis, the author introduces Washington, the Father of the United States, in a fresh portrait focused on the characters of Washington. This book is an impressive biography of Washington's remarkable dedication to the United States history. According to the author, George Washington is an omnipresent figure as he was growing up, described as the man in the moon who was aloof and silent. This book focuses on Washington's wartime service which became some of his major contributions to the United States, rather than merely telling the true story of Washington, its main thesis is focusing on analyzing his contributions and how his governorship had affected the American history. Washington's life is divided into three areas in this book.
Washington could spy on the British and have plenty of warning if they decided to attack . Speaking of an impending attack, Valley Forge was an^ excellent location to
This was the largest British expedition to the colonies, and was intended to expel the French from the Ohio Country; the first objective was the capture of Fort Duquesne. Washington initially sought from Braddock an appointment as a major, but upon advice that no rank above captain could be given except by London; he agreed to serve as a staff volunteer. During the passage of the expedition, Washington fell ill with severe headaches and fever; nevertheless, when the pace of the troops continued to slow, Washington recommended to Braddock that the army be split into two divisions – a primary and more lightly, but adequately equipped, "flying column" offensive which could move at a more rapid pace, to be followed by a more heavily armed reinforcing division. Braddock accepted the recommendation and took command of the lead
First he had to reestablish his men's confidence to enlist more men to fight. Washington’s plan was to block off the escape of the British by taking the bridge over Assunpink Creek. The British commander, Colonel Johann Rall, had intelligence of this, but he believed that his men could defeat the American forces in open
Without Washington, I wouldn’t have my freedom that I get from the Constitution because the British would’ve taken over the United States, and we would’ve been under the King’s rule. In my belief, I think it’s very important for all Americans to remember Washington’s legacy because it has a great impact on their lives. Thanks to Washington, all Americans have a large amount of freedom and can become whatever they want. With Washington’s legacy, I can accomplish my goals in life to create my own change. My main goal in life is to graduate college with a master’s degree in history education, and then later become a high school history teacher.
Washington was a thorough disciplinarian and emphasized a lot on training. He charged with his troops against Indians in the west and in a time span of just ten months his troop had fought twenty battles and lost a third of the men, as put by Ellis “it was his unqualified success” in the war (Ellis p.38). Though Washington never got commissioned in British Army yet he had closely observed British military tactics this led him to gain keen insights into military strategy and strengths and weaknesses of the British Army and this proved as a decisive and invaluable resource during the Revolution. Washington was tough, courageous and had a commanding presence which made him appear to be a natural leader to the troops and they followed him without any questions (Ellis p.

A great deal of the troops had inadequate clothing, with at least one out of three soldiers having no shoes, and many men did not have a coat to protect them from the rain that often fell. Along with this, there was a lack of food, and tuberculosis was also widespread. Swearing to partake in these hardships, Washington stayed near Valley Forge, and wrote to congress often, requesting more supplies for the troops, while also defending himself from congress’s claims that he was unfit to be commander. Washington also had to deal with a group formed by Horatio Gates, a commander who lead a glorious win in Saratoga, Thomas Mifflin, the nations former Quartermaster General, and Thomas Conway, a french soldier. They had recently been appointed to the board of war, and could oversee the war effort on the same level as George Washington.
But that’s just it; he formed a part of our country and seldom gets the credit he deserves. I only knew the name Alexander Hamilton until my sister (who is VERY into Broadway) told me about a musical titled “Hamilton.” When she told me it was a rap-based musical about a Founding Father I admit I was more than skeptical,
He quickly caught the attention of General George Washington, and became the youngest aide de camp at the age of 22. Hamilton’s induction into

His goal was to create a nation that would stand strong, even with the war between Britain and France. He also helped to create and draft the Proclamation of Neutrality, which spelled out the country's stand of not involving itself in conflicts of foreign nations.
Soldiers that would endure the hardships and fight for the independence of themselves and their families were vital to America prevailing over the British.
