The authors of the book Decision Making for Student Success express that, “A college degree has become strongly associated with having a successful life, due largely to higher earnings and the ability of a college degree to open doors to a variety of occupations and careers” (Baum 114). This means that people with a college degree are more likely to have a successful life because they are presented with more job opportunities that earn higher incomes. In “Where College Fails Us,” the author, Caroline Bird questions whether or not college is the best option after graduating from high school. Bird supports her writing with evidence by exploring multiple career fields, the expenses of college, and the quality of education depending on the student. …show more content…
The issue with Bird’s statement is that job opportunities are very limited to those people in today’s world that do not pursue higher education. According to Geiger, he describes the knowledge acquired in college as “a prerequisite for the growing jobs of the new economy” and “the clearest pathway into the middle class” (Geiger 9). In other words, jobs in the economy today are requiring workers to have a college degree. If a college graduate and a high school graduate are both applying for the same job, the employee will most likely choose the candidate with greater education. As a matter of fact, people with successful careers such as: nurses, teachers, doctors, lawyers, and engineers are all required to have a college degree to qualify for the job. For example, my mom, Jeanne Medine, graduated from Louisiana State University in education because she always wanted to educate the younger generation. She was a teacher for 8 years and later went back to college to receive her masters, plus 30 more hours. As a result of her continuing education, she is currently the principal of Iberville Elementary Montessori Program. For example, if my mom had not gone to college her opportunities for working directly with children in a school system would have been limited to working as a paraprofessional. There would have been no opportunities for advancement and the pay would have been minimal making it difficult to live comfortably or support a family. Therefore, with her degree from LSU, she is successful in life; she achieved her goal and is making a good salary with an even better retirement plan for the future. While it may be possible to get a job that you enjoy without earning a college degree, opportunities for
In the article, “Should Everyone Go to College,” authors, Stephanie Owen and Isabel Sawhill’s, published by the Brookings Institution, discusses the benefits of a college education. The article begins by mentioning the arguments related to the requirement of having a college degree while entering the middle class in the United States. Having a college degree reminds people that higher education is the best advancement humans can make to allow them to make more money in their lifetimes, rather than if they just had a high school education. A fact that does not get much attention is not all college graduates, or college degrees, are equal. Even though Owen and Sawhill focus, in general, alternative career paths may result in equally lucrative
What does it mean to be a college graduate and do they really care about your career? In this essay, “We Send Too Many Students To College (2011)”, Marty Nemko’s, asserts, that colleges are a business as well as students are a cost item. Nemko supports his claim by illustrating authoritative quotes with the nationwide survey conducted by UCLA researchers. Nemko’s purpose points out the way colleges misinform high school students who are seeking a degree where sometimes employment is difficult to acquire, in order to collect billions of tax dollars with minimal accountability.
Wina was able to have a better chance of applying for more companies because a business major is more abroad. Not only did it bring economic benefits, but it helped in a way that she could become more confident since she persevered and achieved her dream of earning a degree. Also, she learned a lot of college lessons during those years and is able to practice it in real life, In the end, interviewing my mom, Wina Bailey, helped me understand and learn from her mistakes and how college is a huge benefit of being successful in life. The last message my mom presented to me is to go to college right after high school, get it done right away, and take advantage of opportunities whether it’s tutoring or being able to retake a test, Nonetheless, “ Time management is the utmost, once you get that down you won’t be overwhelmed” this allows any college student to be prioritized and have a “better flow” when it comes to school or college work.
When I read the essay of Caroline Bird, "College is a Waste of Time and Money," I feel that she argues many students do not want to go to college because they do not want to be or they do not want to learn. Besides that, she interviews many people from college student, professors and administrators. First off all, she shows that nine million college students are not in school. She gives two reasons to prove it such as they attend college because they think that the school is a pleasant place and they do not to work to get parents or taxpayers to support them. For these reason, they attend college unhappily and reluctantly.
In our modern society, College is a key to success. As a result, people with college degrees tend to receive more respect than people without college degrees. In Anthony P. Carnevale’s essay, “College is still worth it”, published in January of 2011, Carnevale argues that the official Bureau of Labor (BLS) data is not correct. This is because the income data show that employers pay workers with college degrees a remuneration inducement. As specified by Carnevale, it would be illogical if the education associated with the college degree were not upscale for the job.
This made me wonder what years of college had led to for my mother Wyonette. Wyonette’s college experience began when she was 24 years old. My mother chose UH Maui because in quote “...it was close to home, also the best value.” she said. When I asked her what she majored in and why she said in quote “I chose to major in business because it would be a useful degree that I could use in different aspects in my life.”
The general argument made by author Charles Murray in his article, “Are too many people go to college,” is that the college is not necessary for everyone. More specifically, the Murray argues that students who went to school should have learned the core knowledge they will learn in the college. He writes, “ K-8 are the right years to teach the core knowledge, and the effort should get off to a running start in elementary school” (236). In this passage, Murray is suggesting that start teaching the core knowledge in elementary school until high school is better than to spend money and more time to the college. It is not important to go to college.
It matters to be well informed because that's how we can progress. To conclude, success does not require a college degree. People are made to believe that college promises good paying jobs, but that isn’t always the case. College is not for everyone, people can go and end up in debt because some people simply don’t need it. Many graduates can’t find jobs and they question why?
A rising issue in today’s society is deciding whether or not college is worth the cost. There is an extreme amount of pressure that is forced upon high school students by parents, teachers, and peers to further their education and attend college. However, there is research that challenges the thought that college is the best possible path for a person to take. College may be a great investment for some people, but it is not meant for everyone. This is supported by the arguments that colleges are expensive, jobs do not always require a college degree, and students are forced to choose a lifestyle before being exposed to the real world.
A College Education is not Needed to Make a Million Dollars in a Lifetime A college education is the under-lying key to success in one’s future, are words most children heard and became conditioned to believe; however, while many aspire to go to college after high school, not everyone can, or should follow the path of higher education in hope of making a million dollars in one’s lifetime. With an higher education you are more likely to succeed in a job. “Study found that women with four-year degrees earned about 66 percent more in the 1990s than women with just a high-school education” "Study: Comparing the Earning
Parents and teachers in highschool make it seem like the only way to get a good job and make a living is to go to college and get a degree. In the past this might have been true and that the only way to have a solid future. College education is not worth the cost because it can be vastly expensive, create a large amount of debt, and leave the person unprepared for the job. College today can create lots of debt for the student even years after they graduate from college. Although people may argue that a person can take care of the debt faster the person may not have the ability to do so.
In the article It Still Pays to Get a College Degree Susan Adams writes, “For the vast majority of young people, college still offers a path to financial success” (27). Throughout the article Adams gives statistics on employment rates of people with college degrees and those
They may also be repelled by the rising cost of tuition, and while it is true that pursuing a higher education may be one of the largest expenses you or your parents will ever face, the importance of a college education has become quite evident in terms of earning potential within today’s economy. According to Jeff Mcguire (N.D.) “College education acts as the key to a successful future to individuals who are serious with it. It provides a financial security and helps a person build a remarkable reputation. Personally, it has helped me to have a competitive edge in the workforce.
“Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it”(Maya Angelou). The college has become one of the most common choice for high school students, however, it is still the huge decision left out for the students to choose whether going or not going to college. People often say success is to get a high paying job and be rich. Is this really true? When ending up studying 48 hours the night before the college exam just to go to college and look “successful” to other people, you might realize that there could have been other choices than going to college.
