“You educate a man; you educate a man. You educate a woman; you educate a generation.” Bringham Young (GoodReads, 2015) Women have a tendency of starting a new view or a new idea. It is from women’s beliefs and values that changing times have come for more values and more beliefs. From looking at Women’s Suffrage, White supremacy, and stereotypes, you can see how women have impacted today’s society and my life. The video The Burning Times let us experience what it was like to be a woman in the 1500s. This brought around the marginalization of women. The witches were condemned as devil worshipers and seen as healers not witches in the beginning. The hat was a symbol of knowledge, and the cauldron was a symbol of life and power. It might not be seen but still operating. White privilege, is often rendered invisible but is one of the most common forms of racism and racialism. Most successful businesses and companies are often (96%) run by men (Power, SWLF-3446-FA501_2015 (Women and Social Welfare ( BRACE )), 2015). After analyzing Peggy McIntosh’s “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack,” I realize how many of these quotes and statements that I did not realize as a white female I either felt or was surprised people have to deal with. For example “I can chose blemish cover or bandages in flesh color that more or less matches my skin.” (McIntosh, 2015) As a white girl in university I had no idea that there were not band aids or blemish cover in every colour. I know there are so many different band aids with different cartoon characters on them so why can’t companies like Johnson & Johnson make band aids with different skin colours. There are even more types and companies that create blemish cover, so with that many companies and different shades of concealer that can be made slightly different to make everyone feel beautiful. According to the movie watched in class Whitewashed people believed by coming to North America and escaping the Europeans they believed they were coming to rights and upper class. We got turned into White people by assimilation. It is because of the added colour of other nationalities that we ended up being called the whites. But there is no need for the privilege too. Europeans changed themselves completely, angloconformity, conforming to this dominant white culture. White people don’t see ourselves as a white person but other people and other cultures see us as white people. According to Whitewashed, to be white in a white supremacist society is to deny the idea of racism. (George, 2013). In our culture though the history of blacks and coloured are looked back on as people with diseases and
Like, McIntosh many people of the white heritage are consider the norm in the American society. While many other that are not white,
This week we were assigned to read to different articles. The first article was written by Peggy McIntosh titled, “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack”. Throughout the article, Peggy showed the readers what it means to have white privilege. She showed the readers 50 different types of “advantages” that whites get over other races, such as African Americans. This is the biggest theme throughout her entire piece.
The central them of White Privilege Knapsack is about how certain people have better advantages simply because of what they were born into. Whether it is being a specific race that is believed to be superior over others or being males versus a female. What was the article about?: Growing up children learn from an early age of what is acceptable and what is expected of them.
According to McIntosh, white privilege is like “an invisible weightless knapsack of special provisions, assurances, tools, maps, guides, codebooks, passports, visas, clothes, compass, emergency gear, and blank checks” (McIntosh, p2), also McIntosh believes that she had trouble facing that for she is white as well. Male privilege contains that men have done most of important things in life or in civilization so men must be put in the center, and male hegemony exist in “all the inner sanctum of our most powerful institutions” (McIntosh, p2). One thing necessary for implement meritocracy is to have education, and the education is not designed for certain color or gender. Like McIntosh mentioned, the school gave her “no training in seeing me as
This is because whiteness shares an essential feature of property, “the right to exclude” (1714). Black people, then, are legally excluded from accessing whiteness and the rights and privileges associated with
In Peggy McIntosh’s’ essay, “White Privileges: The Invisible Knapsack”, she uses numerous diverse rhetorical strategies to persuade and engage her readers attention toward the claims she states about white privilege and racism. The essay points out that males and white people from birth have certain privileges, earned strengths, and unearned power. The author made good use of ethos, pathos, and logos to persuade her readers to understand and accept her claims about white privilege, and these claims she specifically stated, gradually expanded her thesis throughout her essay. McIntosh’s purpose in her essay is to identify the “invisible systems” that we have of male and white privilege in order to educate the public and readers about the masked favoritism or inequality to reestablish it.
White Privilege in America Recently in America racial tension has increased because events that’s have been occurring across the country. Across the United States (U.S.) black men have been killed by law enforcement and this has sparked protest in its aftermath. The media has started to give more time to these problems so more Americans have learned about them. This has started a conversation on different social issues that include the dominant culture, social privilege in the U.S. As a young black man this has affected me directly.
Whites are not aware of the privilege they have, simply for the fact that this is their life the majority do not know anything different. When you have been drinking coke every day of your life and everyone else has ben drinking diet coke labeled as coke you wont know the difference. Lipsitz (1995) affirms whiteness is everywhere in US culture, but it is very hard to see. This is how white privilege looks to the average American even though everyone else is not getting the same treat as the whites they do not understand it because they have been treated the same way or so they think their whole life as well. Minorities are getting diet coke their whole life, though they see the whites making more money, and treated better in turn they begin questioning and coming up with the
Growing up in Cuba, boys and girls were freely allowed to play with one another. Many girls would climb big trees to get fresh savory mangos. They would fall and scrape their knees while playing hide and seek and even play sports which were considered “manly”. Many girls preferred to work outside the house, they would perform jobs such as; repairing a broken fence or painting the house. Boys were never told not to play with the girls, in fact, they would also help out around the house and clean dishes after a meal.
White people constantly desire to be the dominant group in the United States, so they fear that one day, minorities will become the majority group. In order to maintain their place at the top of society, they must obscure white privilege by denying the existence of white supremacy. Without ideas of white superiority, White people may lose power and no longer be the dominant group in society. This country was founded on beliefs of freedom and equality, yet minority groups exist who are underrepresented in society due to racism and feelings of white supremacy. Over time, white supremacy has certainly dialed down with the emergence of the civil rights movement and more mindful individuals; however, it is still prevalent in modern America since racial discrimination is still an
New York, New York - Who ever said; "When Opportunity knocks, open the door?" Whomever uttered that statement should be shot and gagged. That's the problem we face in this egotistical society! Opportunity is a fundamental gift that reserves itself for those who take and embrace a situation by exherating effort to make it happen. Charlamagne Tha God, the co-host of Power 105.1's The Breakfast Club explains in his new book Black Privilege: Opportunity Comes to Those Who Create It, how embracing one's truths is the fundamental key to success and happiness.
Now whites have the stereotype of, “ every white person is privileged”. Yeah, that is completely wrong as our words to the colored folk. My family went through a lot of financial issue, which meant we weren’t really “privileged”. Right now, we live in a two-room apartment with the smallest kitchen in the world! But that is only one experience; there have to be many more around.
W.E.B. DuBois, one of the pioneers in Critical Whiteness Studies, emphasizes the interrelation between “the relative invisibility of whiteness” (ibid.) and the maintenance of white supremacy, which underlines the political nature of Critical Whiteness Studies insofar as its premise is to question and challenge existing societal structures. According to Frankenberg, whiteness is a construction or an identity that is inseparable from racialized dominance (ibid.: 9). White therefore refers to a position in racism as a system for categorizing racialized groups and for the identity formation of the subject positions within racism
People see whiteness because they experience its effects. A useful comparison can be drawn between the unrecognised privileges of males, and those of white people (McIntosh, 1988). It is not unusual for men to acknowledge that women are disadvantaged. With that said, McIntosh (1988) argues that white privilege is in the same manner without recognition and thus preserved. McIntosh (1988) views white privilege as an invisible collection of unearned assets that is of benefit to white people on a daily basis.
As I grew older, though, I became more sensitive to social situations and developed a desire to be educated. I’ve always known that white people ruin everything: past, present, and probably future. It’s disappointing to be part of such a destructive race. Then again, the bad eggs can’t represent every Caucasian. I understand that this race has earned its bad reputation through countless decades of genocide, unfair treatment, and ignorance.
