Everything experienced in life impacts an individual's future -- sometimes for better and sometimes for worse. Living overseas is a great experience that will change the perspective one has of life and of the world. Henry Miller, an American writer, once said; “ One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” When moving to Germany, I was scared because I was away from home. Mixed with this fear was a feeling of relief because I was also obtaining a fresh start. Since my overseas move to Germany, I have met people who have inspired me to make better choices with my life, I had the opportunities that my peers haven’t experienced in the States, and was able to travel and meet people of different cultures. In my previous home there were moral people, but there were also people who did not have any drive to better themselves. In Germany, I am surrounded by people who care about my future and want me to succeed. The people here are an instrumental part of my desire to go to college. I’ve always enjoyed helping people because it gives me a warm feeling knowing I am making a difference in someone’s life. I attended a seminar called Stemposium, which exposed me to the STEM fields I could pursue in my life. I became interested in the field of Civil Engineering after going to the Army Corp of Engineers building in Wiesbaden during STEMposium. I saw the many projects they were working on, such as building containment centers and hospitals in Africa when the Ebola epidemic was on the rise. After experiencing that, I knew what I wanted to do with my life. Civil Engineering is a perfect match for me because it combines many of my interests and aptitudes such as math, physics, chemistry, and building objects. Many kids do not realize how life is out of the United States. I have experienced a completely new aspect of life outside of an American life into a third world country. Being able to stay there for half of the summer each year as taught me valuable characteristics. The culture experience I had in El Salvador has made me a humble individual, who has become more generous and a thankful person.
One moment, I was eleven, living happily in a house with my family. The next, my brother and stepfather had moved away, and the rest of my family and I would soon be following. The destination? Yemen. The reason?
My family has always been the center of my universe. They’ve taught me the importance of being united and taking care of one another—because in the end, all we truly have is each other. My parents have raised me to be a good daughter, sister, and citizen. They’ve shaped me to be respectful, responsible, and virtuous, knowing these values will last a lifetime. But above all, my parents have instilled in me an appreciation and eagerness for education.
As a teenager moving to a new country with a different culture, different language, and being thousands of miles away from everyone I grew up with was not an easy change, however, that was precisely what I did in January of 2013 when I came to the United States with my father. My whole world changed since, and shaped my way of thinking. From learning English, adjusting to a new culture, experiencing my first snow and finding my way in my new country, my life has been an exciting adventure. My parents brought me to America almost 5 years ago to have a better life, and to get a better education.
My father was a political activist and my mother was a school teacher, and she influenced my incredibly when I was younger. I struggled in school, and eventually I was taught at home by my mom. I enjoyed reading books on many subjects, and I was able to learn on my own pace. After I became 12, I convinced my parents to let me sell newspapers, and I began to publish my own newspaper, which I named the Grand Trunk Herald. I then learned about the telegraph, and eventually I became a telegraph operator.
My parents always told me that they would support me regardless of what I wanted to be. They have help me in many ways, such as helping me pay for college, buying me makeup and hair products, tips,advice,and by giving me feedback on my hair and makeup skills. Not only is my family very supportive but my friends play a big role as well. My friends have always gave me opportunities to practice on them. They also help me by always being truthful towards me.
I needed to show others that yes, I am not from this country, but I am capable of doing as good and if not better. Looking back, I can proudly say that my all my hard work ever since has paid off. Today, I am a thriving early college student. At the age of fourteen, I was accepted into an Early College High School that has allowed me to take dual credit courses since my freshman year of high school.
I believe that studying my A Levels at Jersey College for Girls will benefit my learning because I appreciate the friendly atmosphere created here by both the students and teachers. I believe that I am an enthusiastic and determined learner, which is reflected in my schoolwork, as I consider my education to be the most important skill and will help me to achieve my goals in the future. I regard myself to be a reliable person because I was chosen to be form representative for this year and I have been also involved in sports day where I was chosen to represent my house, which I believe is a skill that I can offer to the sixth form here at the college.
I enjoy engineering, in fact when I get older I want to become a biomedical engineer. I want to be able to help people. As well as find solutions to help people in their everyday lives. So that hopefully it would make life easier and less stressful for them. I enjoy all the problem solving that comes with engineering.

Throughout my childhood and adolescent years, I always had a dream of joining the military. Though it was a choice, I still did not have any inside information of what it would be like, and the requirements and specifics of the Army. It wasn't until 2005 when I decided to join the United States Army that all my concerns and questions were answered by a recruit; and I was guided through the whole process to enter and prep for the Army. If it was not for the confidences and motivation of my recruiter back in 2005, I might have not made my leap and probably would not be in this uniform today. Becoming a member of the United States Army recruiting team means having a physical and mental toughness in order to perform efficiently.
I was motivated and I wanted to learn but it took many experiences, professors, friends, and settings before I really began to understand myself and what I wanted to pursue. It’s why I believe that getting to study in another part of the world will be an important experience that will further help me shape my life.
Curtis White once said, “Anyone can be a teacher or a professor, but not everyone can influence you to strive for excellence and make a difference in the world around you.”. When I think about what teachers influenced me, I think about what got my stubborn self up and talking. What made them so special that I was so excited to go to their class or school the next day? What made them so special that I would actually do my homework and study for their test? Not the fact, that I wanted good grades because lord knows I don’t have to study to do that.
Being alone in a foreign country the student explore their abilities and become responsible. When an individual live alone he has no one to blame his failures on, this teaches student to be more patient and organized. Studying abroad is transitional stage for a person from dependence on family to self-reliance. He will be better in socializing and the best thing is he will value relations and family more. He will be able to appreciate the important of family life in a better way.
Studying abroad is a growing opportunity that many people around the world of all different ages take. In 2012, over 760 thousand international students studied abroad in the United States alone. The positive reasons for studying abroad are numerous, but there are also negative ones too. Studying abroad brings with itself a lot of preparation and responsibility. Also many people see acculturating oneself and making new friends in a new place can be challenging.
