Our second amendment right has been affecting Americans year after year and continues to influence many people about their personal freedoms. I am writing this paper targeting Americans, specifically gun owning ones, that have been affected by the second amendment or feel passionate about their right to bear arms openly. I am targeting these people who do not want to give up their rights, but are willing enough to read my paper. By the end of this essay I want my readers to be aware of the dangers that open carry might cause and for them to accept the price that it puts on their personal freedom. An article in the Patriot Talon states that the right-to-carry gun laws have been “linked to an increase in violent crime.” Now this shouldn’t be a surprise; the more cars you have on the street, the more likely there is to be an accident. The same goes for guns. However, unlike driving, carrying a gun is not a necessity and gun extremists in America don’t believe this to be true. An opinion article in The Daily Beast shows that not everyone thinks open carry is a bad thing. CJ Grisham, the writer of this article, states that open carry is a good thing in America. He states that if a criminal sees a target with a gun they aren’t as likely to attack them because “Criminals prefer soft targets.” Even though CJ makes a good point here, he is forgetting some key information. What about the criminal? Open carry gives everyone the right to carry their guns out in the open, even the criminal attacking other people. Also, how are civilians able to tell how that person is going to use that gun? For self defense or to harm other people, no one can be sure what someone would do with a gun out in the open. Finally, this scenario is very unlikely to happen, so why someone would carry a loaded AK-47 into a Taco Bell just in case a bad guy shows up is beyond my
Paper will discuss that controversial topic of concealed handguns. Being pro concealed weapons, I feel they can prevent crimes from happening and help people to defend themselves in dangerous situations. The contents of this paper will review the arguments for and against concealed handgun and will deliver a policy regarding the public health topic of concealed carry laws. Concealed handgun should be allowed for the main reason that they help to prevent crimes from occurring. Not only is carrying a handgun a right given to US citizens via the constitution (National archives, n.d.), but it's been shown that states with strict or bands on concealed weapons have higher gun involved murder rates (Gius, 2013).
Concealed carry is said to help deter and reduce crime, albeit it actually puts the general public’s safety at risk especially when the firearms are misused, either intentionally or unintentionally. 1. Concealed carry laws are inconsistent between each state and permits should not be given out to individuals with little or no training. 2. Background checks are not required and do not prevent people with criminal records or a history of mental instability from acquiring a weapon.
Through the news media coverage I have seen the great value of this law and I have seen the poor side of this law. I have seen news networks talk about how mass shootings are related to the open carry law and how this can only get worse with time and the passing of the law. I have also seen the honorable side of the law, such as the ability for citizens to protect themselves more efficiently. For instance, if someone is out jogging at night and another person tries to rob him or her, the one being robbed is able to defend himself. On the contrary, as a result of the open carry law, the person doing the robbing also has a gun to use to harm the one he is robbing.
After all the arguing, the ratification process was in full force. The responsive argument, according to Vandercoy, widely made was that Congress might be able to confine the existing militia force, all armed citizens, to a select militia made up of a small segment of the population. The delegates were trying to eliminate the possibility that game laws, used effectively in England at different points to disarm the population, would not produce a similar result in America. He summarizes the state ratification process; three states ratified while expressing their understanding that the people had a right to bear arms, and two states refused to ratify until individual rights were recognized as amendments.
According to John R. Lott Jr., PhD. “When states passed concealed carry laws during the 19 years we studied (from 1977 to 1995) the number of multiple- victim public shootings declined by 84%. Deaths from these shootings plummeted on average by 90% and injuries by 82%. In fact FBI crime data by economist and political commentator John R. Lott Jr, calculated that 1,570 murders, 4,177 rapes, 60,000 aggravated assaults, and 12,000 robberies could have been prevented between 1977 and 1992 if concealed carry could have been legal in every US state during that time period,”(ProCon.org). This proves that, by passing concealed carry laws, the percentage of crime has decreased ,and states have become safer due to restrictions but still allowing people to protect
Some people argue that allowing the carry gun law to be legal will increase the percent of deaths, robberies, and assaults. Also allowing the carry gun law to be legal will bring more violence and anarchy to the state. A gun on the wrong hands can be really dangerous and also powerful. Allowing people to carry a gun on the streets any time of the day and any time of the year can increase the number of robberies.
With recent shootings in America, such as the Las Vegas shooting, the shooting at the church in Texas, and the shooting in a nightclub in Little Rock many people are weary about gun carriers, however many gun carriers are allowed to in some states that allow open carry firearms. One of the largest coffee chains, Starbucks allows and obey the laws by allowing customers to walk in with their open carry firearm. Where is all the controversy coming from, well in paragraph 2, “Forty-three states have instituted "open-carry" weapon laws, which permit gun owners to carry a firearm in plain sight when in public. In some of these states, businesses reserve the right to declare their premises gun-free zones (just as stores have the right to deny service to barefoot customers), but Starbucks allows customers to carry guns in all states where it 's legal.” (2) Customers are upset that Starbucks allows guns inside because when customers walk in they don’t want to see people with guns, because guns and firearms have been depicted in the news as a
In the United States, the Second Amendment protects the right to “bear arms”. The Amendment states, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” (U.S. Constitution. Amendment Ⅱ). This means that a strong military is a necessity for a safe country and household, so dictating the people’s right to own firearms is considered unconstitutional . Self defense and hunting are the most common reasons for owning a weapon in the U.S. Although this Amendment declares restricting firearms unconstitutional, it is nationally debated whether the use of weaponry is a collective or personal matter.
Some say displaying a weapon in public discourages troublemakers. " An armed society is a polite society," they're fond of saying. Others say it invites trouble. Say, for example, a bad guy
Many people who read the article would be familiar with Columbine, the movie theater in Aurora, or some of the other university shootings that have occurred. By using those examples it shows that Goldberg researched the events that took place, and shares the experience of victims or family members to the reader. The events that occurred at every location imply that gun free zones are not completely free of those who want to commit a crime. In Goldberg’s statement, “There is no proof to support the idea that concealed carry permit holders create more violence in society than would otherwise occur,” (Goldberg 74) He makes an informed opinion on conceal carry permit holders.
Open carry Imagine walking into a convenient store just minding your own business, unarmed, when someone with bad intentions comes in wielding a firearm what are you going to do? Even though firearms have been given a bad name, due to mass shootings and other unfortunate events, the open carry law will lower crime in Texas. A person who open carries is carrying to protect themselves and others, incidentally statistics show that other states that have legalized open carry have lowered their crime rates. States that have legalized open carry have shown lower crime rates through the year of 2012 “It is important to note that in states that have legalized the open carry law, violent crime was twenty three percent lower”. (Joshua Gillin) Crime in states that have not permitted open carry have actually shown a significant
Guns are just a tool, like knives and hammers and it completely depends on the people on how they use it. People who support guns and arms say that the Second Amendment secures individual’s right to carry guns with them and that gun rights is needed for self-protection, and was intended for military to have peace and defend the country if needed (Spitzer, 70). Most of the Americans use guns as a source to protect themselves and they believe that gun ownership prevents crime. A study conducted on November 26, 2013 showed that bans on weapons did not significantly affect murder rates at the state level (Lane, 5). Moreover, even if the rules and regulations are executed on gun control, not all criminals obey the law.
A few years ago, a student named Amanda Carpenter attended the University of Nevada at Reno. She was walking to her car from class when she was attacked and raped. This student felt as if she had been allowed to carry a concealed gun, she probably would not have gotten raped that night (Wiseman, 2012). There are many misconceptions about carrying a concealed gun, everyone is not criminals, and everyone will not commit a crime. A thorough background check, training, and the passing of a test should qualify people the right to carry a concealed gun everywhere.
In conclusion, I believe civilians should be allowed to carry weapons. They should have an extensive background check and take annual training courses. One reason is to defend yourself against tyranny. Another to avoid any encounters with criminals on the streets. Finally to be prepared to defend yourself or family from a home evasion.
A poll was taken and found that “57%” of people voting “feel less safe… [knowing that] concealed guns may lawfully be carried” (ProCon.org 3). Having concealed guns does not make people feel safer; in fact, it makes people feel less secure. For example, an older man with a “legally concealed handgun” fatally shot another man over an argument about texting at a movie theater (ProCon.org). This homicide is just one example why concealed hand guns should be banned. If the man in the situation above had not had his handgun, there would have been no casualties, but because of the law stating that he can legally carry it around, someone had to die (ProCon.org).
