Sam Adams: Father of the Revolution The United States owes its distinctiveness to the achievements of many people. However, there were those who had a more profound influence on America’s success in becoming a unique nation such as Sam Adams. He used his influence as a leader in the Boston community and as a member of the Massachusetts General Court to steer public opinion before and during the American War for Independence. By September of 1777, the cause for independence looked bleak. The Americans had recently lost the strategic Fort Ticonderoga, and Washington had lost the Battle of Brandywine where there were nearly seven hundred American casualties and four hundred American troops captured. France had not yet agreed to support the colonies militarily, and the British had captured Philadelphia, the colonial capital. The delegates fled to Yorktown, Pennsylvania to meet and discuss how to move forward. Throughout the meeting, Adams saw the delegates’ disheartened faces, and he knew that if Congress lost hope the war world be unrecoverable. Although he remained silent for most of the deliberation, he finally stood and encouraged, “Let us awaken then, and evince a different spirit. . . . We shall never be abandoned by Heaven while we act worthy of its aid and protection.” Adams remained positive even when others were discouraged, giving enough hope to other delegates to push forward in their cause. Before America could have any Founding Fathers, the country needed Sons of Liberty to stand up to the British government. These men harnessed the outrage that had spread following Parliament 's Stamp Act of 1765, which levied an internal tax on the colonies. Though the Stamp Act was repealed, the disagreement over "taxation without representation" wouldn 't go away, resulting in events like the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party. Samuel Adams was a man of many occupations; he was a businessman, colonial activist, member of the Massachusetts legislature, and a protestor, but his occupation most important to the independence of the colonies was as a political leader. An influential politician in colonial Massachusetts, Adams was known to use propaganda to his advantage during the years before the American Revolution. Samuel Adams contributions to the Caucus Club, protests against British taxation, and founding of the Sons of Liberty made him essential to the early struggles for independence in the colonies. The Caucus Club was founded in 1719 as a powerful political force in the Massachusetts Colony.
An example of this contribution would be his education. When at the age of sixteen, Adams had earned a scholarship to attend Harvard University where on June 1755 where he was the first from his family to graduate from college. He had impressed Reverent Thaddeus Mccarty who had directed the Central School of Worcester with his commencement speech that he ended up hiring Adams as a teacher. Then on May 1780 Adams, James Bowdoin, John Hancock, and other leaders had founded the American Academy of Arts and Sciences during the American Revolution. The whole purpose was to provide a forum for group of scholars, members of learned professions, and government and business leaders so they could work together even though the democratic interests of the republic.
Samuel Adams was not a very popular leader during the American Revolution and is known by many only by the beer produced in his name, but due in part to his efforts during this time period he should be remembered for so much more. Samuel Adams helped to lead many colonies, including that of Massachusetts, into an area that they had never been before, Revolution against their King and country. Throughout the years there has been many individuals whom have helped shape The United States of America into the independent country it is today. It’s hard to believe that this country was at one point governed by a distant British king, and that before Americans claimed equal rights, they were subject to British tyranny. Americans were in desperate need of a leader who would step up for his people and declare independence, Americans were in desperate need of Thomas Jefferson. ‘ Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743 at his family home in Shadwell, not far from Charlottesville.
