Brandon Robles January 29, 2015 Dr. Carl Frances History 135 First Required Essay. One of the most historic events in history was when Thomas Jefferson put in place the North-West Ordinance. The North-West Ordinance was a detailed plan to provide safety and regulation to the American people in the states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. It was one of the few big turning points in the American government era. One of the greatest success that were in the North-West Ordinance, was that it outlawed slavery. Everyone that lived in the North-West Ordinance had their basic freedoms and rights on what religion to worship. For them to do so, they needed to purchase Louisiana. Louisiana in present day is all the North West and the south west states. At the time Louisiana was owned by the French. America made an offer to purchase the land for $15 million from the French. The French decided to sell it to the Americans for that specified amount of money. The Missouri Compromise was a rule that regulated slavery in the southern states. America did this to even out the Non-Slave states and the Slavery states. This compromise was made in 1820 by Henry Clay. Henry Clay was a lawyer and a politician that was very involved in the Missouri Compromise of 1820. America wanted to expand later in the years. Expanding had to take place more of the west. The Spanish owned most of the west of America, including some of the Pacific Ocean. Some of the most important figures that took part in the Oregon Compromise was the President James K. Polk and the Prime Minister Robert Peel. They two negotiated deals for them to own the west of America. There was a lot of tension between the Spanish, British and America to undertake this
The Land Ordinance of 1785 was significant because it was used to help lower the national debt. It also helped set up many public schools in the North which continued and set a precedent for public American education that is seen today. The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 made it so that new states could be added to the Union and dealt with issues
The most important point of the Northwest Ordinance was all the state would be impartially treated and acknowledged as American republic (261). There will be no served as the territory under colonies (261). Overall, the three points of Northwest Ordinance were all important. The three points included the clear procedure to be a state, bill of rights which assured the rights of people and state, and also the abolishment of slavery in the Northwest. However, there was one most important point resulted from this ordinance, which is all the states will acknowledge as part of the American republic and no longer under the colonies
The expansion of the West territory fulfilled the US to become the ocean nation between Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean completely. Another identity bringing the US to change is “Gold discovery,” even if it was nine days before the treaty with Mexico in 1848, this discovery significant altered the US to the modern era. Based on above situations, the industrialization and the growth of the US began. It transformed the US society from rural to urban. The federal government offered the land distribution for agriculture, mining, and organizing settlers around many areas.
Richard Henry Lee, president of Congress at the time, was worried about lawless people moving west (districts could make their own laws; it could choose to be lawless). 2 years later, the Northwest Ordinance was passed. It created a single new territory, and divided them into 5 smaller territories. When the population reached 60,000, they could apply for statehood. Each new state would have the same rights as the original 13 states.
The Northwest territory was slowly becoming a part of America. Many Americans already lived in the territory and the idea of a Northwest passage had not been forgotten. Annexing the Northwest territory would allow for America to expand. not only for people, but also for farms. Presidents like Thomas Jefferson strongly encouraged the expansion of agriculture.
Not only did the Northwest Ordinance discuss territorial growth, but also academic growth within the country. Although it’s framers did not provide much support, the did give an important statement on education. The document reads, “religion, morality, and knowledge being necessary to good government and the happiness of mankind, schools, and the means of education shall forever be encouraged” (Knepper 59). Another small detail, but important point was that the ordinance mentioned the relationship of those in the territories with slaves and Native Americans. In the document slavery was unlawful in the new territory, but any slave escaping to the territory would possibly be “lawfully reclaimed” by their master.
{Jason Wilson} The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 was an important stepping stone for the United States after winning the American Revolution in 1783. This Ordinance created rules and regulations for the continued expansion of the United States of America set up by the Articles of Confederation Congress. The “Northwest” refers to what is known today as; Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin and a small part of Minnesota. This gave the federal government a source of revenue that was badly needed in light of the Articles of Confederation. These territories were given the standards to which they would become states and gain representation in the federal government.

They reached a boiling point after Missouri’s 1819 request for admission to the Union as a slave state, which threatened to upset the delicate balance between slave states and free states. At this moment in time, Congress was in the middle of deliberating Missouri statehood, by this time a normal expectation whenever a boundary territory accomplished the qualifying number of white settlers.
The Louisiana Purchase The Louisiana purchase was one of the biggest land purchases in history. In 1803, the United States paid around $15 million dollars for around 800,000 square miles of land. This was arguably the greatest achievement of thomas jefferson’s presidency. The louisiana territory was a wild card in the european game of imperialism.

The U.S. paid fifty million dollars and a cancellation of debts worth eighteen million dollars which averages to less than three cents per acre. The Louisiana territory included land from fifteen present U.S. states and two Canadian provinces. The territory contained land that forms Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska, portions of Minnesota, large portions of North Dakota; large portions of South Dakota, parts of New Mexico, the northern portion of Texas, the area of Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado. The Louisiana Purchase was smart move by the United States.
Regarding the sectionalism policies, Andrew Jackson was one notable president who has made an impact on sectionalism. For instance, the First Seminole War was originated in 1817, and this war was originated because Native Americans and American services faced a quarrel as they attempted to evoke African American slaves residing between Seminole groups. Throughout this particular war, Jackson obtained the authority in opposition to the Seminoles. Throughout the duration of this campaign, Jackson apprehended Alexander Arbuthnot and Robert Ambrister. Both Arbuthnot and Ambrister were British and they worsened this issue through delivering weapons for the Seminoles, and they also advocated the Seminoles to battle with Americans for their property
The Missouri compromise was an agreement between the north and south. It allowed Missouri to be the 24th state. Maine was also established, therefore Missouri was a free state. The Mason Dixon line was established, this created a line between the slave and free states. This rule was broken, and even more conflict was contributed to the start of the civil war.
Although this was a big step towards emancipation, the Northwest Ordinance also stated that any slave that escaped to the Ohio territory was to be returned to their master (Doc. H). The Revolution also brought social change. The Loyalists
The issue the compromise was about was whether there should be slavery in the western territories. Maine wanted to be added to the Union, however, slavery was banned there. If Maine were to be added to the Union, it would upset the balance between free and slave states in the nation and the Senate. So, the Missouri Compromise, proposed by Senator Henry Clay, allowed Maine to enter the Union as a free state, and allowed Missouri to be entered into the Union as a slave state.
President Thomas Jefferson sent out Lewis and Clark to explore the west and take notes on everything that they saw. He says in his public comment on the expedition’s return, on December 2, “ Lewis and Clark, and their brave companions, have, by this arduous service, deserved well of their country.” Lewis and Clark did as they were told. They went out and explored the west in hope to help Thomas Jefferson take it over. All three of these text show us that Thomas Jefferson was the one that wanted westward expansion.
