Race relations a topic that has been discussed by billions upon billions of people in the past and still talked about in present day. How is it that the Human race as a whole cannot put aside their differences and come together to form a well and strong sense of equality? Though it may be a simple idea and look easy to do but in all reality this sense of equality will likely not be formed in our lifetime nor may it ever be possible. The United States was formed to on the idea that all men we created equal. With how people were being treated then and now this phrase seems to have been overlooked. The trial pertaining to Tom Robinson though a very tragic and unfair trial but is not the most unfair of the trials presented. In this trial a Tom Robinson was blamed on the false case of rape. “Atticus was asked to defend Tom Robinson, accused of raping a white woman.” (Chapter 9, page ) Now this is a case that Atticus has no real chance of winning and he knows this. Though he does not back out of it because he feels a need to retain his own self-respect and justice. The importance of the Tom Robinson trial is that through the entire book he is rarely mentioned leaving the reader to think that he is truly guilty. This is how the author wanted it to seem, it was made to make the reader think something so that a totally new idea could be thrown in and catch the attention of the reader. For Tom is actually innocent and did no such thing as rape or harm anyone. In this case the only reason that Tom Robinson is being accused of such things is because he is a black person. So people began to think about what was going on and how cruel they have been. The Emmett Till Murder Trial which took place in nineteen fifty five during the time when a movement for the blacks was the most prevalent. This trial was about a fourteen year old who was wrongfully murder and his body was just strewn into the river near by. With Emmett's death many controversial justice fighters sprung up. It is because they were so outraged to hear about this terrible story. One of these people are Rosa Parks a woman who refused to stand up and give her seat to a white man. Well the reason that she got into the fight for rights and all that she believed in. Is all because “A fourteen-year-old boy, Emmett Till, had been brutally murdered and his body thrown in the Tallahatchie River, but despite clear evidence that two white men committed the crime, an all-white jury returned a "Not Guilty" verdict after just an hour of deliberation” (umkc.edu/famoustrials). She would later go on to talk about how this trials had caused he to feel the need to join the fight for equal right and the cry for justice. Race relations during this time had completely changed from what they used to be back in the 1930s or even earlier. People began to start to race their voices, the people that really started to fight were mainly the blacks. The reason being is because they had been treated the worst out of all the races and were tired.
During the questioning by Mr. Gilmer, Tom said aloud for all the court to hear, “I felt right sorry her” by saying those words Tom has dug himself a hole he ultimately did not get out of, for he is found guilty by the jury after a couple of hours. The Biased Trial of Tom Robinson Tom never would've been guilty if it weren't for a biased courtroom. In To Kill a Mockingbird Tom Robinson is accused of raping a young white girl named Mayella. Tom Robinson had lots of evidence that he was not guilty but the community was against Tom Robinson. Here is some evidence that proves that the accusations were motivated because he was black.
The case of Tom Robinson in Harper Lee's novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" has been a subject of debate. While some believe that Tom Robinson is guilty of the crime he was accused of, there is strong evidence to prove that he is not guilty. There is no evidence of Tom doing anything, the evidence from Mayella could not have been true and Tom did not have a fair trial. Firstly, the evidence against Tom Robinson is circumstantial and lacks any real proof of his guilt.
Tom Robinson and many others like him have been victims of racism in the United State. Tom Robinson was a character in To Kill A Mockingbird and he was falsely accused of a crime and then was later killed for it. Tom Robinson from To Kill A Mockingbird is the best representation of racism because of its historically accurate representation of racism when he was almost lynched and later judged by the jury on his case. Tom Robinson is also current accuracy in the fact that he was a victim of police brutality.
As the trial being Bob and Mayella try to get the judge to convict Tom for rape. As the trail continues it is visible that the evidence is not nearly enough to convict Tom. At the crucial point of the trial the jury announces that Tom Robinson is guilty of rape and is sentenced to prison. Tom latter tries to escape and is shot and killed on the spot. The United States prides itself on the principle of equality. In the Declaration of Independence, the very basis of the nation, it states "all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Despite this promise, Maycomb county lacks the humanity and fairness that America promises. Not only do the whites of the county show obvious contempt for the blacks, but they are willing to go as far as to murder one, Tom Robinson, in cold blood, depriving him of the basic right promised by our great country. I believe that Tom Robinson got was found guilty because they didn’t really listen to the trial they just based what they had and that he was black. They didn't seem that two white people would lie to cover up something instead it was easier to just say that Tom is guilty because he's black and must have. Tom is prejudged when people assume he is guilty just because of his race which destroys his innocence. After Atticus shares his closing statement he says, “In the name of God, believe him” (Lee 206) Atticus knows the jury will have a hard time believing his statement because of Tom’s skin color. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch, against all odds, chooses to defend Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping Mr. Ewell’s white daughter. During the 1930s, when the story took place, Tom’s hometown Maycomb was very racist and segregated. Negroes were considered inferior to all white people, making it difficult for Atticus to support Mr. Robinson against the “superior”Mr. Ewell.
But before I digress any further, I believe that Tom Robinson had been dealt with an unfair trial in TKAM, which is largely due to the heavy amounts of bias within the jury, although he was allowed to hold a public trial. The root of unruly judgement is known as bias. For instance in Ch. 16, the jury had men dressed in the Cunningham’s formal wear, hinting that the men whom tried to kill the defendant Tom the night before, was in the jury. This just further proves my thoughts, because those that hate you, and or dislike you, will judge you with false accusations.
Tom was accused of raping a white woman who was Mayella Ewell, Mayella said he raped her while he was helping her with chores. She later on tells the readers that it was false allegations. The reason why she didn 't tell the truth at her first trial was because, Mayella was afraid of being embarrassed because she kissed a black male. She rather have an innocent man get charged with a crime than that. “However, Robinson was transferred from the state prison to Maycomb 's county jail on Saturday, two days before he stood trial on Monday, and Atticus had to defend him against a lynch mob”.
Tom Robinson is being punished for something he has not commit without any justifications to back up why he is receiving these biased actions against him. Bob Ewell, the actual criminal, gets freed; is roaming the streets with no fear, only, because his skin colour is lighter than Tom Robinson’s. In the South of the United States in the 1930´s, the justice system was very unfair towards colored people. Colored people that were sent to court could not receive a fair trial because of the prejudice and racism from the jury. This happened all the time, especially in Maycomb Alabama. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, a colored man named Tom Robinson was convicted of assaulting a white woman just because of the color of his skin. Tom Robinson should have been found not guilty for many reasons.
Don King once said, “Hypocrisy is the mother of all evil and racial prejudice is still her favorite child”. Hypocrisy if the root to many things such as,injustice,racism and prejudice these at first seem innocent but increases into a wildfire of hate,evil,and nefarious deeds. The citizens of Maycomb county would take a white man’s word to their grave as with a black man’s word is considered filth. These citizens only care for themselves as a “superior” race, then sympathizing to the others around them. In To Kill a Mockingbird Tom Robinson is put on trial,as he knows that at whatever cost he will be considered guilty just by the color of his skin.
