Aaron Copland broke musical compositions into different categories. Modern compositions changed from the romantic era and classical era. Modern music took on a more artistic presence. There were different styles of music, i.e. impressionism, symbolism, expressionism, experimentation, and consonance & dissonance. During this period music can be confusing. Music can change time, tempo, dynamics, and mood very fast. This music can also be easy on the ears to quite difficult to listen to. “It is natural enough for the uninitiated to imagine that all problematic music may be safely damned under a single heading. But actually, even in the old days of "ultra-modern" music, a great many different kinds of music were grouped indiscriminately together, …show more content…
Some of the other composers during this period are overpowering in the dynamics, rhythm, and tempo. Debussy’s music is more subtle. The piece of music I chose for the quite approachable is “Afro-American Symphony, IV” by William Still. Still’s work was quite approachable because his music related to so many people because of the subjects he chose. His music had this easy to listen to presence. It was smooth without being complicated by drastic changes. “Still’s music incorporates styles derived from blues and jazz, and his songs, operas, ballets, and symphonic works return again and again to African American subjects and stories.” (Kerman and Tomlinson) Still was able to create a distinct sound and style by taking a mixture of different music. “He 's already amazingly assured in handling orchestral sounds and adept at mingling the idioms of the blues with the unwieldy forces of a full orchestra.” (Morin) The fairly difficult piece of music I chose is “Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celesta” by Bela Bartok. This piece of music is fairly difficult because of everything that you hear. It can be overpowering because of all the instruments sounding as you are being pulled in a lot of directions during
When he had the most successful Afro-American symphony by richest philharmonic. It’s been only performed by 38 orchestras in the U.S. and Europe. He to los Angeles for a writing job, before he know it he was performing a major opera company. Troubled island, when still gives an African American character to the symphony by using a tenor banjo as part of the orchestra. The elements that recall spirituals and jazz tunes.
Despite their difference in age, both composers have one element in common, they were both exposed to music as a kid. Nothing beats enhanced
Soft colors, harmonious and lighthearted were the characteristics of his work in that period. His 1920s and 1930s works were bright and lively. They reflected the upbeat music and the flourish city. His well-known Tableau No. IV, Composition II in Red, Blue, and Yellow, Composition B (No.II) with Red can show his characteristics in that
Copland on Americanism Music of the twentieth century received a great amount of attention, acting as a voice that would reflect the wants and needs of a changing nation. Where words failed, music spoke, and as a powerful voice for socioeconomic and political spheres, composers drew attention to prevalent nationalistic styles coming out of their homeland. One of the most notable American composers of the early twentieth century was Aaron Copland. As a contender for “America’s Greatest Composer”, Copland strived to integrate various images of America into his music that would be understood in the minds of audiences around the globe. Copland was born in 1900 to a mother and father of Lithuanian decent, the mother of which grew up in the
The first piece of the documentary was Mendelssohn, Concerto in E minor performed by David Oistrakh. This piece was performed in Moscow, Russia at the time of 1958. The concerto was such a captivating piece that essentially hypnotizes the audience. As an audience member the piece sounded as it had a fast paced rhythm. When watching Oistrakh you can see that he makes precise, but quick strokes on the strings of the violin with his fingers that in turn gives off a certain note.
feel like this piece is slightly different from the other pieces I have listened to. The violin in this piece was very skilled and played very nicely in this piece. It ranged in different pitches, from loud to quiet, slow to fast. I think the mood of this symphony is very cheerful because it is similar to background music in the movies when the characters are off to an adventure. I like how all the instruments played blend together naturally.
Two of the pieces out of the three that were preformed that stuck out to me the most were Tsontakis and Haydn. These two contrasted with each other in the sense that the first was only played with string instruments and the second also had string as well as the oboe, bassoon, violin, cello, flute and a drum. They both had two different feelings to them which made me appreciate certain parts in each piece even more. Tsontakis piece had four pieces that were very different but at the same time still were related to each other in some way. It reminded me of the life process, and how we have different seasons in our life and it kind of walked us through these seasons and portrayed them in a way that I found beautiful.
Charles Ives is considered a modern composer, along with Aaron Copland and William Grant Still due to the shift in their music. Modernist music associates with innovation, complexity, abstraction, and challenging convention; but according to Ives, Copland and Still, an avant-garde music does not necessarily have to be complex and difficult. Charles and his music embrace ideas of modernism; his personality and point of view reflect in his essay and compositions. He is similar to Aaron Copland in how he viewed avant-garde music and its meaning.
William Grant Still- a prominent figure socially, musically and politically. He was a composer and went to Wilberforce University in 1911 to study composing music and opera. Stills most famous piece was the afro- American Symphony composed in 1930, in which the ideas of the Harlem Renaissance can clearly be distinguished. The blues are the main inspiration for this piece and was done to prove the Black music is important in the American music

Every person has some specific preferences in music genres depending on cultural preferences and emotional conditions. People prefer listening quiet and slow music to relax or choose fast and loud melodies to improve their mood. It is interesting to notice how musicians reflect the world around them; contextual meaning represents cultural and historical changes in society, and the appearance of every genre in music illustrates the people’s needs and concerns.
The twentieth century was an extremely influential era overflowed with several prominent and inspirational figures. An effective figure who significantly impacted and revolutionized music during his time was Igor Stravinsky. The talented and popular Russian composer was mostly known for his masterpiece pieces in ballet music; however, Igor Stravinsky was also a talented pianist and conductor. Instead of being consistent with one compositional style, he reflected and embraced several compositional styles over the course of his music career. He is remembered for successfully giving the world new and unique rhythmic patterns.
The archetypal forms of music were probably drum-based, prelusion instruments being the most easily handy at the time. For an example, rocks and sticks. These plain instruments are thought to have been used in spiritual tradition as representations of wild things. Therefore, many of us do not realized that listening to music really does help a person’s health physically or mentally.
