Grey Davis Mrs. Munger Honors English 10 5 May 2023 Long Way Down Essay Long Way Down has several awards including The Walter Dean Award, Newbery Honor Book Award, Michaell Printz Award, and The Coretta Scott King Award. Will’s brother, Shawn was killed and Will is seeking revenge. Will feels the need to follow “The Rules”. When he plans to get revenge, he goes into an elevator and his decision is quickly altered. In Long Way Down emotions affect the way that Will, Buck, and Frick all make decisions. Will’s emotions are affected by his brother dying, and also trying to get revenge. “ NO.3: Revenge/ If someone you love/ gets killed,/ find the person/ who killed / them and/ kill them.” (Reynolds 33). Revenge is one of the “unwritten rules” in the urban area that the story takes place in. Will believes he must follow the rule of revenge to not be looked down upon by his community. “They weren’t meant to be broken./ They were meant for the broken/ to follow.” (Reynolds 35). Will explains how “The Rules” were not meant to be broken, but for the broken-hearted to follow them. Will’s emotions led him to considering making poor choices. …show more content…
“But you ain’t got it in you, Will/ he said/ cocky/ your brother did, but you-/ you don’t.”(Reynolds 101). Buck is either seriously telling Will that he can not do it. Or he is once again still trying to convince Will not to do anything out of line. “You don’t got it in you/ he repeated/ over and over again/ under his breath/ while sliding a pack/ of cigarettes from/ his pocket.” (Reynolds 106). Buck is still trying to convince Will to not make dumb choices. Buck does not want Will to get hurt or worse end up like his brother Shawn, dead. Buck is trying to embarass Will to stop him from trying to kill Riggs, supposedly the man who killed Shawn, but they really have no
It’s a pleasure to talk to him. Yes, my buck!” Therefore, his grumpiness didn’t last throughout the whole
Buck was like my brother. I had to. You don't really understand until you’re in that position. But, trust me, I understand. The perception someone may have on whether a person is guilty of a crime or not varies.
He had changed, from Fear to Sadness. In reality, he was a traumatized kid that didn’t know what he did wrong, so he was punished for it. His revenge for that had been petty and cruel.
Emotions play a large role in this community; especially, Uncle Mark, Mikey, and Will in Long Way Down. Will’s dad let emotion take over his thoughts and decision before he killed the wrong guy. “UNCLE MARK AND MY FATHER/ looked at me with hollow eyes/ dancing somewhere between\ guilt and grief/ which I couldn’t make sense of\ until my father admitted/ that he had killed/ the wrong guy”. (Reynolds 218) Will’s dad, Mikey, allowed the hurt he felt to control his decision of killing who he thought shot his brother.
Some may say that Will follows the rules since Shawn followed the rules. Due to this statement from the novel Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds it states, “see this? … your brother's fingerprints are in there”(Reynolds 271). This illustrates that when Shawn got revenge for buck he put his fingerprints in the hole made by the bullet.
Right before they go over very shallow ice the man beats on Buck relentlessly because he won’t budge, knowing that they were going to die. The man obviously finds much joy in beating on Buck since it isn't helping anything. Next, Buck shows his unconditional love for
Revenge is a never-ending cycle that leads to the demise of an individual. In the book Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds when the narrator, Will, is seeking revenge after the death of his brother. Will receives advice on his choice from people who are presumed to be deceased and have came back to life. Although many characters in Long Way Down impact Will, the most significant character he encounters is Mikey Holoman because he alters Will's decision to get revenge. Mickey Holloman was most influential in Will's decision because he represented the endless cycle of revenge.
I think about guilt when I hear this, for example if you steal something from your parents. The guilt you might feel after the fact would eat you alive until it’s unbearable. In Will’s dad situation it would be way more intense than taking twenty dollars from a parent, because he stole someone's life away. This could have told Will that if he goes through with his plan, he could end up feeling so guilty it would eat him alive as well. Another convincing thing Will’s Dads said was this, “I didn’t know he wasn’t the right guy, Pop said a tremble in his throat.
The other two, no snitching and revenge, Shawn eventually taught him later on. Will did the best he could to follow these rules. Growing up he saw everyone following these rules and viewed them as normal. Although he was never put in the place where he had to follow rule number three, revenge.
Wes understood that this was not fate that caused him not to reaction but the act of freewill. He didn’t feel that it was time and place for the problem to be solved in the way of action but just moving on was the better path. However the other Wes felt differently in that occur with him. Freewill was defiantly use in this situation, Wes got into a fight with this boy over a girl and so Wes decide to go get a gun to retaliated against the boy because of his pride,” Wes could only see red, He was blind with rage.
The third and final rule, revenge refers to retaliating or hurting someone in return for being hurt by that same person. Will assumes he must
He could see them, beyond Spitz and to either side, half-crouching for the spring, their eyes fixed upon him." (Chapter 4 Page 42) Buck, blinded by his lust and greed for power overthrew the once lead dog, Spitz, to gain more of what he wanted, power. Another example of this is, "At last, at the end of the fourth day, he pulled the great moose down." (Chapter 7) Buck's greed for more and more power drove him to kill a large bull moose in which he found a worthy opponent. However, this kill was not for food, there were plenty of cows and calves around the bull to attack.
He learned from his bad experiences. Buck then met spitz who Buck didn't like at all because he was rude and mean and hurt buck. So did my sisters they met the drunk side of their dad in which they didn't like because he beat them. Overall, Buck went through a lot he nearly died and then the one he loved
Buck is being called into the wild. His life events changed who he was and sent him free in spirit and body. Once Thornton was kill Buck was able to be free and just be a wild dog with the others (napierkowski). In my opinion, this book shouldn’t have been in the category of banned and challenged books.
He encountered many confrontations and adventures in the wild, but Buck still remains the leader due to his strength. He has gone through many situations, lost his team, and his recent master. This is where he will meet Thornton and bond together. He will adapt to a new lifestyle as this quote emphasizes “Dog and man watched it crawling over the ice. Suddenly, they saw its back end drop down, ‘you poor devil’, said John Thornton and Buck licked his
