The major role played by African American women in the reconstruction era is revised and illustrated in Tera W. Hunter’s To Joy my Freedom and Elsa Barkley Brown’s article Negotiating and Transforming the Public Sphere: African American Political Life in the Transition from Slavery to Freedom. Both documents analyze the participation and involvement of black women in social and political activities inside of their communities.
To Joy my freedom, written by Tera W. Hunter provides an inner look into the lives and strives of African American women – mainly working class – living in Atlanta between the eighteenth and nineteenth century, in the middle of one of the most belligerent environments created in the era of Reconstruction.
On the other side, Elsa Barkley Brown presents the story and development of African American women’s political involvement in a more specific sphere, focusing on their participation inside the churches in Richmond, Virginia.

As Hunter mentions, “By the end of the (19th) century, African Americans had deployed a multitude of strategies in the workplace, in their neighborhoods, and in the political arena to protect their personal dignity and the integrity of their families and communities”.

This includes poor women as they escalated on the political scene during the war, allowing more women to take on new positions within the state and federal governments. On the other end of the spectrum, African-Americans were increasingly hostile to the idea of fighting and/or working for the Confederacy, which would eventually lead many African Americans to flee plantations. This damaged Confederate society as well as accelerated the end of the war. Sugrue shows Northern African Americans who assembled against racial inequality, but were excluded from postwar affluence. Through fine detail and eloquent style, Sugrue has explained the growth and hardships integral in the struggles for liberties of black Americans in the North. In “Women of Color and the Reproductive Rights Movement”, author Jennifer Nelson takes the readers back to the Unites States in the mid to late nineteenth century, where the feminist movement began to focus on the reproductive rights of women. Feminists argued that abortion was the decision of the woman who was with child, and her alone. However, several politicians disagreed with the ideology of these women. The author meticulously analyzes the rise of reproductive rights, the feminist movement, and reveals to her readers the essential involvement of women of color in these former issues between the years 1960 and 1980. Craft’s last words were, “I have made a difference,” and she in fact, did tremendously just that. From her great acts of assisting in desegregation to her influential changes in the NAACP, Craft redirected the way that African American culture in Texas was going, and shaped it into something much greater. Thanks to the braveness and strong character of Juanita Shanks and others like her, African Americans in Texas now have rights that may not have been possible without these people who decided to stand up and fight for a change. Throughout the course of American history, slavery has played an impactful role in the shaping of the United States. The abuse of slaves, the perspective of slaves as inferior, the controversy over the moral aspects of slavery, and the disagreement of slavery altogether led to uproars and unrest in America during the 19th century. Increasingly, the number of slaves who revolted against their masters grew, and concurrently, more citizens joined the abolitionists’ movement to end slavery. Due to these controversies and upheavals, the Civil War broke out. Many people played essential roles before and during the Civil War, but one woman especially stands out.
African Americans face a struggle with racism which has been present in our country before the Civil War began in 1861. America still faces racism today however, around the 1920’s the daily life of an African American slowly began to improve. Thus, this time period was known by many, as the “Negro Fad” (O’Neill). The quality of life and freedom of African Americans that lived in the United States was constantly evolving and never completely considered ‘equal’. From being enslaved, to fighting for their freedom, African Americans were greatly changing the status quo and beginning to make their mark in the United States.
Nella Larsen, one of the major woman voices of the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s, when many African American writers were attempting to establish African–American identity during the post-World War I period. Figures as diverse as W.E.B. Du Bois, Alain Locke, A. Philip Randolph and Jessie Fauset, Zora Neale Hurston along with Nella Larsen sought to define a new African American identity that had appeared on the scene. These men and women of intellect asserted that African Americans belonged to a unique race of human beings whose ancestry imparted a distinctive and invaluable racial identify and culture. The African – American 's Assimilation into White America America is often considered the land of opportunities, a place where people can have a fresh start, a clean slate. America is a land that is made up of immigrants. Over the centuries America has been a place where people dream to live in, however the American dream wasn 't as perfect as believed; there were issues of race inferiority, slavery and social inequality amongst other problems. When a person arrives into a new society he has a difficult task ahead of him- to assimilate into that new society- which includes the economical, cultural, political and social aspects. In the following paper I will discuss how the African American, who came as slaves to America, has fought over the centuries to achieve equality in a white society that discriminated them.
The public speaker starts off by bringing pathos into the speech by asserting “I have borne thirteen children, and seen most all sold off to slavery, and when I cried out with my mother’s grief, none but Jesus heard me! Ain’t I a woman?” (“Ain’t I a woman”). The excerpt I chose to reflect on is called “An End to the Neglect of the Problems of the Negro Woman!” by Claudia Jones (1949). Jones express the concerns that women of color in her time suffer from the neglect and degradation they receive throughout their lives. During this time, the reason many African American women go through the struggles in their community originated from the notion that the “bourgeoisie is fearful of the militancy of the Negro woman” (108). In my opinion, they have every right to be afraid of African American women. As Jones stated nicely "once Negro women undertake action, the militancy of the whole Negro people, and thus of the anti-imperialist coalition, is greatly enhanced" (108).
The book will challenge students to understand how Reconstruction changed the lives and society of both the common white and African-Americans in the South. Lastly, the monograph supports the class’ philosophy of cultural history as it examines African-Americans in the Southern states. Students will use their knowledge of cultural history to analyze the conflicts and violence that rose between both white and African-Americans living in the South. The final two monographs were chosen for the course as the display the changes in American society amongst women, African-Americans, and other marginal groups. Homeward Bound: American Families in the Cold War Era and America Divided: The Civil War of the 1960’s will task students in evaluating the changes in the American in Post-World War II America.
