The Reconstruction Era occurred in 1865, it was was a period after the Civil War in which America was focused on rebuilding the broken South. In 1867, the Radical reconstruction gave former slaves a voice in government. During this era, formers slaves gained a platform in the government, with some blacks as Congressmen. However, not everyone supported the idea of Reconstruction. Less than a decade after the Reconstruction period, a small group composed of democratic ex-confederate veterans, white farmers and white southerners sympathetic to white supremacy joined forces together to form the Ku Klux Klan. The clan spread fear and terror towards the blacks in a systematic way. Their reign of terror was felt throughout the south. It spread fear using guerilla tactics, whipping, beating, and lynching. Women played a key role in the abolitionist movement that had worked to bring an end to slavery. Many northern women, began by opposing slavery because they had become politically, informed, organized this contributed to their efforts the abolishment of slavery. At the time of 1868, women weren’t allowed to be employment were restricted, they received unequal pay compared to men, they weren’t allowed to commit fornication or extreme abuse. Where women weren’t protected by the laws, they were unable to vote which sparked a movement of suffrage. KKK member also played a huge factor in the gender roles. African Americans were allowed to vote however they were intimidated fear their lives to both so it was useless. Newly freed slaves were aided through the usage of federal laws and constitutional amendments. Former slaves were enabled to vote, own property, legally marriage, receive and education and file lawsuits. This extended the power of the newly freedmen. Women were jealous because they still weren't allowed to vote or have a say in
Emma Catone Professor Payne 11-9-14 1. In the document “Platform of the Anti-Imperialism League” the league explained why they think imperialism is anti-American. In this document the main argument as to why imperialism is anti-American is because it is against the constitutional rights that are given to US citizens. These constitutional rights are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. In 1899 the Philippines were under the control of Spain.
Between 1861 and 1865 men were obligated to leave their homes and fight either on the union or confederate side of the United States. As a result women were forced to maintain the households while the primary breadwinners were gone. The Civil War challenged the ideology of the roles of women in the antebellum era. The roles of women in the north and south transformed tremendously and became a pivotal aspect to the war. One duty women took during the Civil War was become supporters of their male loved ones, which proved to be influential since it raised the morals of the men and gave them something to survive for.
In the early 19th century, a wave of social reform movements swept across the nation, seeking to cleanse society of social evils. During the early 19th century, women joined the workforce in mills giving them a taste of independence and allowing them to defy the Cult of Domesticity. Women also joined antebellum reform movements such as abolition and temperance allowing them to expand their influence outside of the private sphere and realize the similarity between the strife of African slaves and their own struggles. Women in this time period desired to not only better their society but also themselves and sought to do this by reforming education for women and in order to gain more opportunities. The women in the movement sought to provide
The 14th Amendment of the Constitution emancipated the African-American slaves by stating that all citizens were to be free. Women were free in the United States;however, they were far from equal. The most significant way in which women weren’t equal is that they were not allowed to vote like their male counterparts. Women during the mid 19th century and into the early 20th century took notice of this fact and fought for years to give women the right to vote. Some women took what was viewed at the time as a radical approach by fighting for suffrage at the federal level, while other women took a more passive approach by fighting for suffrage at the state level.
The movements during and shortly after the Reconstruction Era focused on African Americans civil rights and integrating them into society successfully6. President Lincoln started the integration of African Americans by issuing the Emancipation Proclamation during the Civil War. The Emancipation Proclamation focused specifically on African Americans, and ignored the women’s civil rights movement, which was growing rapidly during the Civil War. Many people during the Reconstruction Era, such as Fredrick Douglass, viewed the issue of getting rights for newly freed slaves more important than getting females new rights. As a matter of fact, most court cases that were brought in front of courts during and shortly after the Reconstruction Era dealt
Reconstruction was from 1865 to 1877. During this time period there were many changes made to the Union. Some of them being the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments, the Civil Rights Act, Black Codes, and many more. The Ku Klux Klan was also started during reconstruction.
From the early years of America till the time of the Civil War, women were commonly considered to be weak and meek. Before the American Civil War, women were also considered to be very dependent on men. Men were the ones who made the money and worked for a living. Women were often in the home and taking care of their family and their house. It was very surprising when a woman would try to become more independent such as Harriet Tubman, who left her husband in order to help free the slaves.
The Fifteenth Amendment granted black males the right to vote. Although it was a huge milestone, it was bitter sweet. Yes organizations such as the Freedmen’s Bureau provided some education to the blacks, but it wouldn’t be enough. Many freed slaves did not know how to read and write, let alone anything about politics. Many wouldn’t have known how to vote; and yes the right to vote was of course important, but it was still an empty gesture.
Slaves, blacks and women played a very important role in the abolition movement. The goal of the abolitionist movement was the immediate emancipation of all slaves and the end of racial discrimination and segregation. Women role will still be low under slaves depending on race. If its a white woman she has more power than black slaves this include female slaves and white male has more power. When the American gave the slave their rights women were still consider low under male even for a black make this also include black women as well.
The Civil war brought large amounts of despair for people of both the North and the South. However, women during this time period were subject to a new sense of opportunity that would that would influence many to become leaders and take on important roles both on and off the battlefield. On the battle field many women were nurses and helped take care of soldiers who were wounded while others actually fought in the war disguised as men. Furthermore, women had important roles besides helping on the frontlines. Many took on new roles at home when the men in the family left to fight in the war.
The American civil war led to the reunion of the South and the North. But, its consequences led the Republicans to take the lead of reconstructing what the war had destroyed especially in the South because it contained larger numbers of newly freed slaves. Just after the civil war, America entered into what was called as the reconstruction era. Reconstruction refers to when “the federal government established the terms on which rebellious Southern states would be integrated back into the Union” (Watts 246). As a further matter, it also meant “the process of helping the 4 million freed slaves after the civil war [to] make the transition to freedom” (DeFord and Schwarz 96).
Women wanted to be looked as an equal compared to men and did not want to end gender roles. Their movement did help women with property rights granted, some states allowed women to go to college and jobs were now open to women not just men anymore. This would lead to move freedoms in the future because of the of this
The Women’s Suffrage Movement I. Before the Women’s Suffrage Movement started, women didn’t have many rights. African-American women and slaves had less rights. They didn’t have legal protection; some didn’t even get the right to raise their own child. Other women had more rights, but not as many as men. They weren’t able to go to college, they had to work at home, weren’t allowed to have strong public opinions, some were sold or even forced into marriage so their family could get more money.
The Reconstruction period lasted from 1865 to 1877. The thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth amendment were created during the twelve years of rebuilding the country. All of the amendments were made to protect former slaves and their rights but on paper they did not have any rights. The reconstruction period had its successes and failures.
Women wanted equal rights under the law. During this time slavery just ended in the world. The U.S. wasn't ready for these rights. Women Came Together To Change The World Women
