This is your daddy writing to you from France. I know your only three but just in case I don’t make it home I want you to know that I love you and your mother. I know you also won’t understand what I’m about to explain to you, but I want you to have a letter to remember me in case I don’t return. So here I go… The United States entered the war because of a few reasons. The main reason for entering the war was the sinking of the Lusitania. This outbreak was caused by the Germans. Sadly, this killed 128 American citizens and is what ultimately put this amazing country into war. Along with that, the Zimmerman Note added suspense into entering the war. Again, this note was sent from the Germans to get Mexico to fight against the United States if they would choose to enter the war. Our president, Woodrow Wilson, was the one who declared the United States was to no longer be neutral but instead be a part of Britain, France, and Russia.

Just a few days ago there was mustard gas spread around the area of where we were hiding. Luckily I had a gas mask with me or else I wouldn’t have made it. Sorry to say your uncle was one of those unlucky ones. I thought you might want to know as soon as you could. At this very moment of writing this letter, I can hear the airplanes ready to attack in the air from the enemy’s side. I’m not even sure if you will get this letter, but I’m hoping for the best. The shrapnel is everywhere from the bombings last night. The bombs came from the tanks. Tanks are so dangerous and so big it can run over practically anything and still not have one dent after all the destruction. I'm still learning all the new weapons of this World War and I think it’s more than most of us soldiers can handle. I’m trying to stay strong so I can get back to you and your mother. I just want to be able to say I love
