This is your daddy writing to you from France. I know your only three but just in case I don’t make it home I want you to know that I love you and your mother. I know you also won’t understand what I’m about to explain to you, but I want you to have a letter to remember me in case I don’t return. So here I go… The United States entered the war because of a few reasons. The main reason for entering the war was the sinking of the Lusitania. This outbreak was caused by the Germans. Sadly, this killed 128 American citizens and is what ultimately put this amazing country into war. Along with that, the Zimmerman Note added suspense into entering the war. Again, this note was sent from the Germans to get Mexico to fight against the United States if they would choose to enter the war. Our president, Woodrow Wilson, was the one who declared the United States was to no longer be neutral but instead be a part of Britain, France, and Russia.

Just a few days ago there was mustard gas spread around the area of where we were hiding. Luckily I had a gas mask with me or else I wouldn’t have made it. Sorry to say your uncle was one of those unlucky ones. I thought you might want to know as soon as you could. At this very moment of writing this letter, I can hear the airplanes ready to attack in the air from the enemy’s side. I’m not even sure if you will get this letter, but I’m hoping for the best. The shrapnel is everywhere from the bombings last night. The bombs came from the tanks. Tanks are so dangerous and so big it can run over practically anything and still not have one dent after all the destruction. I'm still learning all the new weapons of this World War and I think it’s more than most of us soldiers can handle. I’m trying to stay strong so I can get back to you and your mother. I just want to be able to say I love
The United States did not want to take part in World War I, the U.S simply wanted to stay neutral but then the war started to interfere with the U.S financial state. President Wilson did not want to declare war right away, instead he stated that the United States needed to prepare their army to ensure them victory. With both sides in the war running low on supplies Wilson believed it was better to be safe than sorry since the Unites States military lacked supplies, support and unity from Americans. Why is that? The U.S military around the time of the 1900’s was considered to be one of the smallest and weakest in the world because of this there was no chance against a German army of 4.5 million men.
Wilson viewed America as a nation of peace and he wanted to preserve this view. However, as time went on, the little things the U.S did while claiming its neutrality started to matter. Germans retaliated to the U.S trade with the Allies. One thing led to another and the U.S joined the war under the Allies’
We shall endeavor in spite of this to keep the United States of America neutral. In the event of this not succeeding, we make Mexico a proposal of alliance on the following basis: make war together, make peace together, generous financial support and an understanding on our part that Mexico is to reconquer the lost territory in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. The settlement in detail is left to you” (Zimmerman, 1). This phrase cut out from the actual document shows Germanys real intentions in the war, and is already preparing to go to war with the United States. It was obvious to President Wilson that the Germans were not going to back down, so he called the new Congress into session prematurely and asked for a declaration of war on April 2nd.
would not actually be going to war due to President Woodrow Wilson’s implications. Minor events, including the sinking of the Lusitania, occurred before the United States made its appearance in the war. The U.S. suddenly became a target when Germany began the strategy of “submarine warfare”. Any ship that brought supplies to Great Britain or France at the time would be destroyed with torpedoes. Only a few weeks later, four American ships were sunk, and fifteen people were killed from German submarine attacks.
I am writing back to you, oh and by the way thanks for the supplies you sent me and that letter was wonderful. Anyways this week has been awful. I never thought I war could be so ugly, that I would be killing all these people. We just lost the battle, it made me feel bad about myself think I didn’t do good enough to support my country. To make this battle our win.
The British Decoded a telegram from German Foreign Minister Arthur Zimmermann to the German Minister to Mexico, von Eckhardt, offering United States territory to Mexico in return for joining the Germans("The Zimmermann Telegram | National Archives"). The press published news of the telegram on March 1, shocking the American people. On April 6, 1917, the United States Congress formally declared war on Germany and its allies("The Zimmermann Telegram | National Archives"). Ultimately, this affected how the Americans viewed Germans and
Wilson asked congress for a declaration of war against Germany. Although not at once congress agree to the declaration of war and Pres. Wilson signed that declaration on April
If the U.S. was truly neutral, they would not have interfered in war with the accomodations relating to their connections with Britain. The Zimmerman Note, large amounts of exports and loans to the allied powers, and Woodrow Wilson’s War Message, all present evidence surrounding the United States not acting like the neutral country they claimed to be, ultimately leading to the United States being forced to enter World War I.
George Washington encouraged the United States to take a neutral approach, to avoid wars with nations in the future. Woodrow Wilson wanted to continue the policy of neutrality. He eventually asked Congress to declare war on Germany. The Government failed to sign the Treaty of Versailles and join the League of Nations. Many thought that joining the League of Nations would lead to war.
Altogether, the US needed to secure its nation due to many threats across the world. During war, many things occurred and happened. Germany created some strategy against the United States, which was revealed in the
