Yossarian may not be the ideal image of a hero, but in his own way he fulfills this reflection of a hero. This may be either by making the correct moral decisions, earning the respect of others, or serving as a model towards other soldiers. But what is a hero? According to Time’s “Webster’s New Ideal Dictionary” a hero is a “mythological or legendary figure often of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability”. This is only one of the many definitions of a hero, the Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, for example, defines a hero as “a person who is admired for brave or great acts or fine qualities”. So, how does Yossarian fit into any of these categories? Yossarian is definitely not a mythological or legendary figure often of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability, but he does have some of the qualities in the second definition. He is courageous, brave, and sometimes moral. There are many types of heroes. As J.S. Morin states in his article “7 types of heroes” there is the perfect hero, the misfit, the grizzled old-timer, the everyman, the anti-hero, the prodigy, and the un-hero. The perfect hero is that who portrays everything good about humanity and possesses great courage, skills, bravery, etc. The misfit is the one who everyone least expect, be it because of appearance or that he is a social outcast. Maybe something deeper like the willingness to give up part of oneself so that another may have a better life. A hero should be a person who has the right motives for their heroic actions.

In S.E Hinton’s, The Outsiders, there are abounding visible and obscured heroic traits in the characters. Johnny Cade is profoundly mistreated and loathed by his family, however, he is possibly single-handedly the most heroic person in this book.
A hero is someone who is willing to sacrifice themselves for the greater good. They don’t need to be incredibly strong, blazing fast or highly intelligent. They don’t need skills, they need a big heart. Based on this definition, Eragon from the book Eragon and David from The Chrysalids are hero’s. They both have the traits, follow the hero’s journey and sacrifice things for the greater good of something bigger.
On October third, exactly at 1:49 PM, I finished an essay that explained my definition of a hero. In the essay, I stated that a hero should have three main character traits: selflessness, responsibility, and kindness. Out of Achilles, Hector, and Odysseus from Black Ships of Troy, Hector would best fit my definition of a hero. To begin, Hector could be known as selfless. Selflessness has a connection to the word bravery.

Throughout time what one considered a hero has changed, the modern definition of a hero is a typically a man, who is admired as a result of his/her courage, achievements, or braveness. However, back when The Epic of Gilgamesh was written, a hero was someone godlike with courage, and ability to do selfless acts. Based on this definition, it is clear that Gilgamesh strives to be a hero. Not only does he conquer evil and battle monsters, he also does the impossible and obtains new knowledge of death.
