“You Cannot Judge a Pumpkin’s Happiness by the Smile Upon His Face”
An exceptional father figure is portrayed in the story “You Cannot Judge a Pumpkin’s Happiness by the Smile Upon His Face”, by Jane Rule, through Harry’s character. Harry is a good father figure due to his in involvement in his children’s lives, such as, he went trick or treating with his children . Furthermore, he is strict/forceful when needed as a good parent should be, for instance, telling his children to bundle up for the rain instead of staying at home. Ultimately, he is caring and concerned for his children’s safety, illustrated by Harry thinking about cancelling Joey’s paper route. All these qualities, depict how Harry is doing a good job as a father.

He might have been forceful aswell, but in acceptable way. Joey and Sally didn’t want to go out for Halloween, because Sally felt sick and it was raining. Harry said “she’ll be fine” (13) to Sally’s upset stomach, and “you can put sweaters on underneath” (13) since, it was raining. He is pushing his children because he doesn't want them to stay home for Halloween. A lousy parent wouldn't bother if their child went out for Halloween, or not. On the other hand, Harry is determined to take his children out for halloween, because as a child Harry didn't really get to celebrate any holidays. ‘Harry had not had the conventional joys of childhood himself, he was enthusiastic about them for his own children.’ …show more content…
Joey and Sally entered a party while trick or treating where, everyone was smoking pot. Harry could smell the pot from outside and he started to panic because he couldn’t find his children. When Joey and Sally came out of the party, Harry was really concerned for Joey because he knew about pot and even knew where the people at the party grew it. Joey said “they grow it on their roof”(14) and Joey should not know about pot at his age. Harry talks about cancelling Joey’s paper route because he doesn’t want him throwing papers at cripples, drunks, vicious dogs and dope fiends. Harry realized they should have moved to a better neighbourhood. Harry said “ we can give a Halloween party at home next year.” (15). This indicates that Harry doesn't want his children going door to door around their dangerous neighbourhood, he wants to keep his children safe and in my opinion that's the first thing a good parent would think of doing.

In conclusion, I feel that Harry is interpreted as a strong father figure in the story, “You Cannot Judge a Pumpkin’s Happiness by the Smile Upon His Face”, by Jane Rule, due to the fact that, he acquires all the right qualities. He does a good job parenting his two children, Joey and Sally. For instance, Harry was involved with his children’s activities and knew when to put their foot down with his children. Moreover, he took certain measures

Walls continues to tell stories of her father and to go along with Christmas Jeannette, her mom, and siblings all planned the perfect one but Rex ruined it. Shortly after Rex had burnt down the christmas tree Jeannette covered”the Christmas that was supposed to be our best Christmas we’d ever had. When Dad went crazy, We all had our own ways of shutting down and closing off, and that was what we did that night”(115).
Oliver realizes that his dad’s unusual and unexpected response to his speech is sincere and honest. His dad confesses that he wasn’t the best father to Oliver, but that he was proud. The evil and sardonic character Oliver portrays quickly changes into a warm and kind-hearted person, as Oliver finally receives his father love and stops all plans of destruction. Oliver becomes a much happier and less selfish person once he found happiness in his father. The novel shows how love was more valuable and helpful to Oliver
“But Wes knew exactly what he had stumbled on. He had just found his mother’s weed stash. After a moment to think about whether he should take it, he came to the obvious conclusion: he was going to turn this barbecue into a real party.” (Moore, 59), as you can see, Wes had a choice into either leaving the stash alone or taking it and he chose the wrong
He does not acknowledge the importance of his family until his son betrayed by his father’s absence from his birthday party, wishes his father cannot lie again. It becomes a struggle in the man’s job, and in his daily life, but he eventually learns his lesson and the family is restored. The
When Harry’s mother passes away, he gains responsibilities such as looking after Keith, doing housework, caring for his father and finding his way without a loving mother. Harry ‘could cook at the age of seven’, and he and Keith ‘shared the duties [their] mother left [them].’ Harry now ‘make[s] breakfast… on [his Dads] birthday’ because he knows how to, with the knowledge he received as a young child. With all the duties his mother left Harry, readers see that Harry has the independence of an adult. Harry’s father cuts his finger off at work, ‘it severed the bone, the tendons, and spat across the factory floor.’
One of the most-awaited moments of the year is right here once again. Dim neighborhoods are brightened by ghastly smiles of Jack-o '-lanterns in communities where the breeze is also slowly getting colder and the leaves that have fallen off of pines give each step a crunch. In a few days, children dressed like pirates, princesses, ghouls, and little monsters will be knocking on doors requesting goodies and several other goodies. Yet just before Halloween begins, you can delight the kids in your community by teaming up with several moms and dads and arranging a Halloween scavenger quest.
9. Style (a) Characterize the author’s diction. (specific word choices- formal or informal; simplistic or learned, emotional or objective, etc.) Most of the language in the book is reasonably informal. The children, during the time of the writing of the book, spoke very informally, especially boys like Huck and Tom who cared little of school.
He has his many intriguing attributes of being an exciting parent, but opposing those are his attributes of being irresponsible and more often than not, immature, which is why it is important to go in depth and
Contrastingly, Atticus strives to role model good behaviours, in order for his principles to permeate his children 's morals, ethics and tenets. Exemplified in this quotation: "First of all," he (Atticus) said, "if you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you 'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view […] until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." In this dialogue, Atticus is bestowing a crucial piece of advice, regarding empathy. Atticus paints the importance of empathy with a brush of metaphors on the canvas of life.
By using his bright personality and his affectionate nature, he accomplishes providing the emotional support and well-intended actions necessary of a quality parent, even if he is often unable to work and stay sober. In life, a single flaw may seem to dictate one’s entire life and personality. In reality, a person is much more than that an individual imperfection, and even the best people can still contain major flaws. By not generalizing the mistakes of others, it is possible to see people how they really are- instead of by their
In this letter, Adams uses many rhetorical strategies to appeal to her son’s feelings towards his father. She uses strategies such as pathos to amplify her motherly feelings towards him and appeal to his emotions towards his father. She also emphasizes his born advantage of having an extremely well rounded father, to teach him about life and how his world
In To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Atticus shows traits of an excellent father. In a small, southern town full of old fashioned, narrow-minded people, Scout and her brother Jem must learn to do what is right. Atticus leads them onto a path that not everyone in the town may travel. Many people in Maycomb disapprove of his method of parenting and voice their opinion about it throughout the novel. What is popular is not always what is right, and Atticus shows us this throughout the novel.
Atticus Finch: Good or Bad Father “Dad, you have to buy me this, my friend has this at school and it is SO cool. It only costs ten dollars, please.” A good father may be the one that always buys anything, and everything for their child/children but in reality, a father with good punishement, and teaching to do the right thing may be considered a good father. Atticus Finch may not be like your average everyday father. From Jem and Scout’s point of view, they do not see anything “wrong” with him.
