Psychologist There are many specialties for psychologists: however, for use in this paper, the salary of a child psychologist will be the focus. Again, the salary of a Psychologist can range greatly based on the size of the community he/she serves, or the type of work provided. The median income of the child psychologist is just over $64,000 annually (indeed, 2017). Youth Counselor Those who work for youth centers and in the service of today’s youth do so with little as far as income to show for it. Many times service is provided on a volunteer basis and done so happily. It is because of the vulnerability of his/her client that the child and adolescent counselor must abide by impeccable ethical standards that include “confidentiality and respect for the client’s values, heritage, beliefs, and self-determination” (Woodside & McClam, 2015, p. 26). Youth counselors will come in contact with virtually every race, sex, ethnicity, and culture, and as the world gets smaller and smaller and the client of the youth counselor becomes more diverse, it becomes exceptionally important that counselors understand the intricacies of all cultures so as to provide quality service while maintaining the dignity of the client. King (2012) stated ethical codes are the pillar of the profession creating a social covenant to the protection of the client at all …show more content…
Many children and adolescents take on much of the responsibility of what is happening when, in actuality, it has nothing to do with them at all. There is a fantastic group of people who intervene on behalf of the kids and let them know they are still loved by their parents and they are not to blame for what is happening. This group is youth counselors. These wonderful people provide this much needed service, for the most part, simply because they care about the kids. At school, at church, in hospitals, and in youth centers men and women of all ages, races, religions, and cultures have an open door policy so kids know they have someone who will

It is ethical for a counselor to ensure all students have a fair and equal right to respect, academic achievement, and personal development. One way to ensure equality and respect is for the counselor to identify personal biases and
Currently, I am pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with areas of study in Psychology and Criminal Justice. A Bachelor’s degree in these areas of study, can open the doors to many different career paths ranging from human services to research to counseling. Personally, I would like to seek a career that will allow me to have an impact on other people’s lives. For this reason, I choose to explore the career of a Foster Care Placement Specialist. To better understand the, job responsibilities, employment requirements and pros and cons of this career I decided to seek counsel from my friend, Rachel Zimmerman, a Family Services Specialist with the Virginia Department of Social Services.
Some of these teens were probably bullied or are having trouble at home. If these teens were to get the proper help they needed they most likely wouldn’t be harming themselves or anyone. The report found that most of the students there has learning disabilities, emotional and behavioral
The ACA standard also focuses on ethical issues in technology, online counseling, and social media. Another focus is on the imposition of counselor values on whether referrals should be made because of the counselor’s religious or other values. The ACA standards clarify that referrals are made only based on skill-based competency, not personal values. The ACA was more specific in stating the values of the counseling profession in the introduction; the enhancement of human development, diversity, and multiculturalism, social justice, the integrity of the counselor-client relationship and
One ethical issue is that of a counselor being able to balance their personal beliefs versus their profession. A counselor must be able to resolve their own feelings toward a client or their behavior and enter the professional relationship from non-judgmental standpoint. Another key ethical issue is that of dual relationships. A counselor must understand that there is no circumstance in which a client and counselor must engage in a relationship outside of the professional aspect. It is unethical for a client and counselor to have any sort of social interaction whatsoever and boundaries should be established (Scott, 2000).
Beside personal therapy, boundary setting is one of the essential elements to develop effective client-counsellor relationship. It provides a consistent framework in the counselling process which shapes the appropriate interaction and relationship structure. There are five basic principles outlined in the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) Interim Code of Ethics 2015 that guides the therapeutic boundaries. They include: beneficence (to promotes the best interest of the client), non-maleficence (“doing no harm”), autonomy (to encourage independent thinking and decision-making in the client), justice (to provide equal and fair service), and fidelity (to be honest and commit to client’s progress). However, the structure
Coming into the master’s level counseling program, I was bewildered by the complexities of the various professional associations and the separation of the code of ethics of varying associations and laws created for counselors. Likewise, I needed to familiarize myself with the discordance between the state regulatory laws and statutes in counseling. It is significant to be familiarized with ethical standards and understand the law's differentiation with an emphasis on personal morals and values. It is indispensable to gain knowledge of professional codes by considering Texas law and how the implementation could affect my future professional counseling career.
Mental Health counselor is the best career for me because it will bring me personal satisfaction, financial stability, and abilities to help others. First, a career as a mental health counselor would bring me personal satisfaction. In 7th grade, I started noticing deep cuts on the arms and legs of my fellow students, and dealt with those who felt like there is no hope for them. I’ve had to sit there and watch as those I care about fall to depression and beg to die, knowing there is very little I can do to help them.
According to the world health organisation 50 percent of mental illnesses begin by the age of 14, that’s why there are organisation such as the kids helpline dedicated to helping and counselling young people(Kids Helpline, 2016). In the news there are always people talking about teenagers and about what they do and how they act. Teenagers sometimes make mistakes and have a bad day doing it tennagers have to think about what they do every day no matter what it is or what their doing. Another reason why is because of school and what they do in it. Tennagers aren’t just not careless they sometimes in between ages 15 to ages 17 go out and do things and some tennagers tell their parents what they are doing before they do it also tennagers will not lie about where or what they did to their parents because they will know what will happen to them if they don’t.
Counselors must be aware of their ethical and legal obligations when providing counseling services, such as those related to crisis prevention and intervention. This knowledge can guide the counselor in making appropriate decisions to best assist the client. The American Counseling Association Code of Ethics (2014) provides counselors with the core principles of autonomy, nonmaleficence, beneficence, justice and fidelity to guide them in decisions making. Furthermore, the following ACA (2014) ethical codes are applicable to crisis counseling: A.1.a. Primary responsibility.
Like other professions in the mental health field and helping professions, counseling typically attracts those who are imbued with a need to help others, to make a difference in others’ lives, the community around them and sometimes even the world. There are many facets to a counselor and to counseling, some of which take on personal attributes such as personality, the values and beliefs held by counselors, and what they perceive their role in the counseling profession to be. Other facets involve ethical considerations in therapy, the importance of the profession, the value and process of change, important counseling practices and the value of necessary self-care a counselor ought to engage in. The role of a counselor is to act as a conduit to change and wellbeing in a client.
Duffy and Chenail (2008) stated when using a research approach in counseling, the counselor needs to make sure they understand the value and the purpose of the research study. The research needs to be appropriate to the client needs. Therefore, the counselor should be aware of the role and the responsibilities when using research for their client that they might not be any biases or cultural sensitive towards the client, if the counselor does not feel comfortable using the research the counselor can also reference “The Code of Ethics of the American Counseling Association”. Sherpis and Daniels (2017) specified when a counselor is conducting a research study or using a research they should consider the dignity and welfare of the client. The counselor needs to make sure to respect clients at all times.
The counselor has an ethical responsibility to strive to reduce any harm caused to a client through a empathic
