Giving back is a way most show love to others. To volunteer means to freely take part in giving back to a community or person. Volunteering can range from helping someone with groceries to building a house for a family in need. Although most volunteer work benefits the person receiving help, there are many unexpected benefits that the volunteer experiences as well. What most people do not understand, when volunteering, is that it is an excellent way people can grasp an overall understanding of what interest them. Like all decision making processes, deciding on a career seems to be the toughest. This course of action allows that person to easily decide on what they could potentially do for the rest of his or her life. As well as career opportunities, health benefits have been a large impact on volunteering. When one chooses to volunteer, he or she does not particularly expect health benefits to be an outcome. These benefits come without purpose. Moving large objects such as bags of trash or materials to build houses works the body as a form of exercise. So, when one is involved in many volunteer projects they are receiving many health benefits that they do not realize they are getting. Volunteer work, while a requirement for all Florida high schools, is also an opportunity for growth and change in a person. It is through volunteering that people can find a passion for helping others, a newfound happiness within themselves, and change themselves based on this discovery. While nothing as drastic as that happened to me, I came to find, pleasantly, that volunteering was an opportunity to learn more about about myself and, more importantly, others. The service I did, with the Missionaries of Charity especially, felt very personal as I was a bearer of something good and necessary for the disadvantaged. Volunteering is very important; it is both vital to the people receiving aid as it satisfies their needs, and it is important to those administering aid as it gives them joy and helps them become better people. The reason I volunteered for St. Margaret 's Fair was so I could finally stop sitting around and get to work. When I saw the opportunity to do something important, I grasped at it; I selected the ring toss game was because I felt it would be fun and important. I do believe my job at the St. Margaret 's Fair was very important as it both collected money for those in need and, at the same time, instilled me with a love of volunteering. The purpose of the fair was to collect money for humanitarian efforts in the local area.
I think it is important to volunteer in something you want to start before you actually start. Volunteering should be done intrinsically. Many students find community service so difficult, time consuming, and not enjoyable. Therefore, they tend to only complete the required hours without any essential effort. To call mandatory community service 'volunteering ' is a problem because then we begin to confuse the distinction between an activity that is willingly done and something that is obligatory and perhaps not always rewarding.
