Adam Lanza- Obsessed with murder, anorexic and unmedicated Elementary schools usually conjure up images of playgrounds, paint, posters, and crayons, not a mass grave. On December 14, 2012, Adam shot twenty innocent children at the Sandy Hook Elementary School, along with six adult staff, and his mom. (Oliveira Jr., Pedro). As cops approached him after the shooting, Adam felt the need to quickly kill himself instead of facing the consequences. The day ended with him taking his own life and with him, all the mystery behind his motives. Adam was the youngest out of two children, and a student at the Sandy Hook Elementary School for most of his life. At the age of three he was diagnosed with autism, then later also identified with symptoms of …show more content…
But that contradicted with what professionals advised him and his family. At the age of fourteen after psychological evaluation was done at the Yale Child Study Center, professionals recommended him treatment. Because if not his situation would only get worse. His parents never really understood the seriousness of his disabilities and were ok with Adam’s choice to stop treatment in 2006. As Adam matured and moved out of grade school his responsibilities increased, and he wasn’t able to take part in everything like the other kids at his school. In his teenage years his autism got worse. Mainly because of the fast changing hormones in his body, yet he still followed through with no treatment. In 2009, soon after his parent’s divorce, and his brother’s leave to college, he started with his obsession over mass murders. A subject he was really well educated even though he was never taught anything. (Solomon, Andrew) Adam wanted to feel normal, and go to the same school everyone else did, but that increasingly worsened his case. He forced himself to do something he was not capable of …show more content…
As one of Adam’s fascination, his mom greatly influenced him. When they went shooting he expressed happiness. And would talk to his mom, unlike at home, where he trapped himself in his room. Even with the growth in his disabilities, his mom never considered reducing her son’s access to guns, as she thought it kept him safe from anything that could happen. (Christoffersen, John). Though it appears today that might not have been the safest choice. If Adam’s access to guns was reduced, and his mental disabilities were treated, maybe the shooting wouldn’t have
The book Newtown by Matthew Lysiak is about a school shooting in a little town called Newtown. This shooting takes place at Sandy Hook Elementary School on the day of December 14, 2012. Adam Lanza, alumni of Sandy Hook, was the murderer responsible for the loss of twenty children and six adults. “In fewer than 11 minutes, twenty first-grade pupils and six adults had lost their lives” (Sanchez 1). On December 14, 2012 the lives of families across the nation changed forever. Adam Lanza, a twenty year old man suffering with multiple mental illnesses, went on a shooting rampage at the Sandy Hook Elementary School after murdering his mother just minutes before. He had no motive for his unbelievable actions, but took the lives of children who had so many more years to live and memories to make. The Sandy Hook shooting was the second most deadly shooting in the United States, as it scarred innocent people, and still has families across the nation wondering why this horrific event happened.
Lanza was 20 years old and had Asperger’s. Asperger’s, a form of autism, is not believed to have played a major role in what caused Lanza to do the shooting a Sandy Hook. Lauren Elder, a clinical psychologist with Autism Speaks says, “Often, their violent acts are self-injurious and spontaneous, the result of frustrated attempts to communicate and not getting their pain or desires heard or addressed.” (Time). Lauren Elder states that in most cases Asperger’s causes one to hurt themselves.
His first kill, happened right after his high school graduation, at the age of 18. Beginning at a very young age, Dahmer showed a fascination with biology, especially by bones and death (Jeffrey Dahmer). This occurred during the concrete operational stage of his development. Due to his behavior not being reprimanded or discouraged, Dahmer then understood it to be acceptable. Taking Jean Piaget’s theory of cognitive development into consideration, Dahmer simply did not get the proper assistance in healing during his childhood (Gyr, J. W. 1967).
He has brown hair and ADHD, he is 17, tall, clumsy, extroverted and kind. Adam is liked by most people in his school and has a small group of friends. When he is reunited he is determine to reconnect.
Even when he was diagnosed and advised to take a certain medication, because Adam didn’t want to take it the mother refused the treatment. The mother did not put enough authority in Adams life and let him do his own thing although she knew something was wrong. Nancy mentioned to friends about Adam, but she never reported it to psychologists or to people that would be able to help Adam. The mother being a gun enthusiastic knew there was something wrong with his son that he was mentally ill and she had guns that were easily accessible to him. The constant change of schools because Adam was being bullied, did not solve the problem either.

“Overall, I would just call him socially awkward, I don’t know, shy and quiet. Didn’t really look you in the eye,” said one of the Lanza’s family neighbors (Vogel). In the United States through 2013 and 2015, on average, there were two school shootings a month. Sandy Hook Elementary school was one of the deadliest school shootings in United States history, (Ray). What’s missing from the typical kindergartener’s backpack? A gun. The ultimate solution to gun violence is more guns, isn’t that obvious? We are in need of guns everywhere to the point where our nation needs armed guards in every school. They say the more guns we have, the more gun violence there is, but in fact it does the complete opposite and solves gun violence.
We have come to live in a culture where it’s taboo or unacceptable to simply check in with people emotionally and offer some empathy and understanding. I’m not saying this would magically fix all gun violence. I’m just saying that all of these things — the lack of gun laws, the lack of health care, the inability to have basic conversations with friends and neighbors about what’s going on with them, these are all extensions of a callous and self-absorbed culture that lacks any real empathy.” He ends with these points to emphasize what society has become.
A serial killer assassinated his 17th victim and is hunting for more victims. A peak into his early years consisted of a violent and abusive family. Even though he grew up in an unstable household, he lived a rather ordinary life. He was a three-sport varsity athlete in high school and had many friends. He was always an aggressive kid but used sports as an outlet.
