The Alien act and Sedition Act were two major laws passed by the Federalist Congress in 1798. Both of them caused major social and rights conflicts within the colonies by jailing people who protested the government, deporting innocent immigrants and having no freedom of the press. The Alien act of 1798 allowed immigrants living in the US to be arrested or deported without trial if they were assumed to be dangerous, or in other words, pro french. It also affected the immigrants right to vote. Previously, Individuals were required to live in the US for at least five years before voting, now they had to live in the US for at least 14 years. The Sedition Act of 1798 permitted strong government control over civilian action by allowing anyone who

During his time as president, Adams had decided to sign the Alien and Sedition Acts. The Alien acts was an act that had said that they could deport foreigners and make it harder for them to be able to vote in any election. Sedition Acts had said that if people were to write hateful against the government or president then it is considered as a
Congress reason for implementing the law was that they felt America's national security was at risk. George Hay, who was a member of the legislature of the state of Virginia, strongly opposed the Sedition Act of 1798. Hay believed that information that is printed in good
On July 14, 1798 the Alien and Sedition Acts were passed, marking the year that the United States dishonored the Constitution by violating the 1st Amendment of the United States of America. The 1st
I believe that America should delay armed conflict until prepared for warfare because of America’s weakened economy and military. Jefferson’s Embargo Act of 1807 crippled the economy when it confined all US ships to harbor in an attempt to deny France and Great Britain agricultural and manufactured products. Instead of harming Britain and France, this act hurt America’s economy, leaving thousands unemployed. By preventing trade, the heart of our economy was halted and caused a recession. Even after the Embargo Act was repealed and replaced with the Non-Intercourse Act and then Macon’s Bill #2, Americans are penniless with the destruction of commerce from embargoes.
The Alien and Sedition Acts were a series of laws that were passed in 1798 by the Federalist Congress and then were signed into law by President John Adams. These laws made it harder for immigrants to vote and also included powers that were new to deport foreigners. Before this law was passed, an immigrant had to live in the United States for 5 years before being able to vote, but the law changed it from 5 years to 14 years. The Federalists saw as a threat to American security. One Federalist said that there was “no need to invite hordes of Wild Irishmen, nor the turbulent and disorderly of all the world, to come here with a basic view to distract our tranquility,” even though the non-English people have been supporters of the Democratic-Republicans
There was also a Sedition Act, which basically tried to quite down the dissenters. As the nation moved farther away from isolationism, it also moved farther away from democracy by using propaganda and social pressures against isolationists, anti-war dissenters, and immigrants. The Sedition Act of 1918 affected lots of
In the summer of 1798, Congress decided to pass the Alien and Sedition Acts, which were four bills that limited the rights of foreigners who lived in the United States. The first act declared that the president could deport, or hold captive, those living in the United States if the states were at war with the home country of the immigrant; this was known as the Alien Enemies Law. This takes away the person's right to freedom because they were judged on the state of their country. Much like the first act, the second act allowed the president to “expel” an immigrant, however Congress limited this expulsion to two years maximum; this act was beyond unfair to the people who could be deported because it did not give them the right to defend themselves
There were many bitter controversies revealed when the Alien and Sedition Acts were passed in 1798. The rise of xenophobic fears was not only found in the general public but in the heart of the lawmakers. These acts show how xenophobic fears were on a rise, however howe these expansion were not constitutional, and the excesses power given to the federal government. The Alien Act are examples of how in America, xenophobia, or the fear or distrust of people from other countries, was on the rise.
Today you can voice your opinion and write what you believe. However there once was a law in place that went against that freedom. It was called the Sedition Act, it went against the first amendment of the United States constitution, and it turned the political parties against each other. It caused many people to become angry because their freedom to talk and express their opinion had be taken away. The reason I request for its repel is because it was a violation of the first amendment, turned political parties against each other, and because the only reason the Sedition Act was made was because of the president’s wife.
Today, I am left with the ominous feeling that if prompt actions are not taken to resolve the issues between the Democratic-Republicans and the Federalists, then our nation will be trapped in a cage of domestic strife. Therefore, I feel that it would be in the best interest of America to revoke the Alien and Sedition Acts, so that freedom of speech can be reinstated and that peaceful collaboration between the parties can be possible. For this reason, I am supporting and voting for Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Patrick Henry, Aaron Burr, and George Washington. As a supporter of the Democratic-Republicans, I agree with Mr. Jefferson that all political parties need to have a say in our government if we want to preserve the democratic spirit
The Sedition Acts, tyrannic actions by Federalist Adams and his lackies to oppress the rights of the people, are clearly a

This event aligns with the creation of The Espionage Act of 1917 and the Sedition Act made in 1918. The purpose of these laws was to forbid "spying and interfering with the draft but also "false statements" that might impede military success", as well as any ' 'statements intended to cast "contempt, scorn or disrepute" on the "form of government" or that advocated interference with the war effort" (Voices of Freedom 119). As a result, American citizens expressing their disapproval in any form regarding the war would be arrested and punished by these
