Jean Paul Balzac Ms. Seijo English 10 4 February 2014 Marijuana In 1919, alcohol was made illegal across the United States with the goal to better people’s lives and make society safer. During the fourteen years that the prohibition lasted, crime rate nearly doubled, unemployment rose, and tax revenue decreased. Eventually the ban on alcohol was repealed because of its negative impact on the economy and society. Now fast forward to the year 2015, where a common substance known as marijuana is illegal. It was made illegal in the 1930’s for the same reasons as alcohol, because it was believed that it was going to do harm to society. As years have gone by, it is obvious that a mistake was made. The fact that marijuana was made illegal has created numerous problems for the United States that on the long run could have been easily avoided. Countries in different parts of the world and some states within the United States have already legalized marijuana and they have all shown positive outcomes out of their decisions. Although marijuana is illegal in majority of the states, legalizing marijuana for recreational use would bring about social and economical reforms that would help deter crime in the country, increase the amount of money the government makes, and also help people that are medically in need of the drug. Cannabis, also known as marijuana, is a depressant drug that affects the central nervous system. There are around 500 chemicals within natural marijuana but
Just as in the 1920’s we are also facing prohibition, and the same things that played out in the 1920’s have been occurring for years. Marijuana is federally illegal, but some states have already started to legalize it. There are also crime organizations that profit because of the prohibition of marijuana the same as the gangsters of the 1920’s did with the prohibition of alcohol. Prohibition is damned to fail when the majority of the country is against banning a substance, but the federal government still bans it. 2)
In the past decade, a number of movements to legalize the use of marijuana has been gaining momentum. According to the 2016 Gallup survey, a record high 60% of Americans say that marijuana should be legalized and this figure marks a 9% increase compared to 2014. Support for legalizing marijuana was 31% in 2000, 50% in 2016 before reaching 60% last year. This shows that despite government efforts to eliminate its use, marijuana is becoming more popular. It is clear that
Introduction In recent history, smoking marijuana (also referred to as weed and/or cannabis) has become a prevalent past time amongst college students of many majors, even students who aspire to become medical clinicians. According to the United States’ Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), approximately 38% of college students have claimed to have used marijuana recreationally in 2015. That statistic is nearly 10% higher than the number of students who claimed to be recreational marijuana users in 2006 (DEA). Marijuana is particularly popular amongst premedical and medical students for its ability to relax the body, cause hallucinations, induce psychosis, and enhance mood when used (Marijuana, drugabuse.gov).
The war on drugs has failed miserably, and the American society is suffering economically from it. Marijuana has proven itself not to be harmful if handled the right way. Marijuana is not addicting like many drugs. The United States could grow further if the government would put an end to the prohibition of marijuana. The social contract is not agreed upon by everybody in our country and probably never will be, but numerous people are starting to believe that it should be legalized.
Suppose everyone lived in fear for the rest of their lives, constantly pushing away change because no one knows the exact outcome. According to The Discovery House, researchers, scientists, and observists can proudly say that marijuana does not affect the same part of the brain as any of the other substances under the Schedule I Act. Any way of using marijuana is much safer as well, yet being under this schedule, it is tried as highly addictive with no medical value and no recognition for the differences in recreational and medicinal use. Criminalizing it has not affected general use either. My proposition is to clear out the clouded, avoided areas of our country’s problems and be rid of them forever by having everyone under the influence.
Marijuana, formerly known as Cannabis, has been looked at in a medical sense for centuries. Marijuana was seen as a household drug throughout the seventeenth to the early twentieth century as a remedy to reduce nausea or vomiting, headaches, an anti-inflammatory, and the choice of pain reliever. In the 1920s, the Eighteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution outlawed the manufacture and sale of alcohol, also known as Prohibition. As a result, marijuana flourished as a psychoactive drug.
Ksir, 2004 mentions that there are over 400 chemicals in marijuana. The main active part of cannabis is DELTA-9 TETRAHYDRO-CANNABINOL, commonly known as THC. It is THC that causes the feeling of intoxication and relaxation, otherwise known as “high”. Ksir, 2004 also mentions that THC is the element that causes marijuana to be classified as a drug. Consuming of cannabis in various forms such as a blunt (cigarette), hash, etc. gives a sense of euphoria and causes difference in how a person perceives what is going on around him/her.
If marijuana is regulated and taxed properly, it can generate millions of dollars that can help pay the debt of the US and/or help cities rebuild a better infrastructure. Marijuana has become the third most popular drug in the US behind alcohol and tobacco. It is a renewable resource and is not just used for smoking; it can be used to make paper, oils, and cloth. Every year millions of tax dollars are being spent to enforce marijuana laws. If these laws were repealed and marijuana was legalized, we would not only make money from the marijuana, but we would also be using a lot less money to enforce marijuana laws.
Marijuana should remain illegal in the United States, and states that have passed laws to make it legal should reverse those laws. Marijuana is addictive and a gateway drug. Legalizing marijuana will make it generally more available to the public, which will also make it more likely to be used by young adults and children that are not old enough to make smart decisions regarding drug
Synthetic Marijuana There is a new trend in drug use in today’s society. Synthetic drugs are on the rise and mostly used among teenagers and have created major health problems. Synthetic drugs are being chemically created in laboratories and in some households. Synthetic drugs such as synthetic marijuana are created to give the same high as real marijuana and cocaine in a ‘legal’ form. All users who use synthetic drugs will pass a drug test due to synthetic marijuana being hard to trace.
Why Marijuana Should be Legal Marijuana is a very prominent issue in society today. Many false and slanderous things have been said about marijuana in recent times. But the truth about marijuana continues to reveal itself. Sadly these truths are being criticised because of the stereotypical view that many people call the typical “pot smoker”.
Marijuana, also known as Cannabis, is derived from the Cannabis plant and is used commonly for either recreational or medical purposes. Marijuana is composed of chemicals such as tetrahydrocannabinol (HTC, and over eighty cannabinoids. Marijuana is acknowledged for providing smokers with a “high” feeling. Since the twentieth century, this illicit drug has been banned across the world. However, over the past few years studies have been conducted on marijuana and the results show that it can actually be helpful in many different areas of society.
According to Bernie Sanders, “It is time to tax and regulate marijuana like alcohol. It is time to end the arrest of so many people and the destruction of so many lives for possessing marijuana”. This argument is important because marijuana is considered a "gateway drug," which has not been scientifically proven. Many people have tried marijuana or at least know someone who has attempted to smoke weed. A person most likely does not know as much as they think they know about what it is or the effects.
According to U.S News, six Americans die every single day as a result of alcohol poisoning. Believe it or not, in the ten thousand years of known cannabis consumption, there has never been a death blamed on marijuana use. Understanding these statistics goes to show how well our country is ran. Alcohol brings in an abundance of revenue to our country every single day; whether you are watching television, scrolling social media or driving down the highway, there is no doubt that you will see a positive advertisement for alcohol use even though over ten thousand American lives are taken each year due to drunk driving
Pot refers to the flowers, extracts and the leaves of a plant called Cannabis sativa and other closely related species called hemp. It is one of the most commonly used illegal drugs and is known by different names like marijuana, cannabis, grass, weed, and hash. It is widely grown across the world and is considered a recreational drug. There are many people who are of the belief that pot usage is less dangerous in comparison to using other illegal substances.
