Unit 3 Argumentative Processed Essay: The Soda Ban The highly debatable and argued over ‘soda ban’ has been taking over the world and grabbed the media’s attention. But why? Well, many think the ban is about soda, but really, it isn’t all about soda. Truthfully, it is about the world thinking about the decisions they make. But, the ban does restrict all drinks ran by city that are above 16oz or have 50% or more of milk and fruit juice. However the soda ban may have some positive effects, ultimately the ban is a bad idea. Due to the contradiction it brings, the fact there is only one person making the decisions, and the other ways people can spend money. The soda ban is a defective idea in itself because of the loopholes in the plan. As Karin Klien talks about the problem in her article “Sodas a Problem but…”, “Convenience stores such as 7-Eleven are overseen by State and would be exempt , but a Burger King across the street would be restricted” (Klien, 288). In addition, there isn’t a need for this soda ban because it makes no sense for a customer at a fast food restaurant (like Subway) to walk across the street and go to a 7-eleven, which is a state-ran store that has drinks that are over 16oz., and even over 64oz. People could even go to a grocery store and buy a 2-liter bottle of the sugary drink because it isn’t run by the city. Another way the soda ban contradicts itself is because of how you’d get the same amount of sugar if you were to drink a drink from a smoothie

The author describes sodas and sugary drinks as today's reason for child obesity and diseases such as type 2 diabetes and etc. The author states data and scientific reasoning for her explanations on why these drinks are inferior to the body and country. The author remarks that, “These drinks have very little, if any, healthy ingredients in them and now there is strong scientific evidence that they are linked to weight gain, obesity, type 2 diabetes and other chronic diseases.” The author uses scientific knowledge and evidence to prove her point that a tax on soda will improve the country's health rate. The author also uses statistics to show how the U.S.As sugary drink consumption rate will go down.
A common argument could be that it won't be effective because people are going to eat what they want, and if they want to consume more than the recommended amount of soda they will find a way around the ban. Instead of being able to buy one large soda they can buy two or three small sodas. Some will undermine the ban and buy however much sugary beverages they want, but this ban will make it more inconvenient and establishments that go against the ban will get a big fine. This ban can open the eyes of those who weren’t informed about the dangers of obesity and how sugary beverages play a big part in it.
Our vision of a “good life” includes these large amounts of soda, which shouldn’t be okay. This “good life” that we are painting is getting embedded into people’s heads. This might make children think that you should drink soda as often as you should drink water. This soda ban would definitely limit the amount of lousy decisions
Therefore children should be allowed to buy soda at school if they can anywhere else. Secondly, kids bring pop or sugary drinks to school on their own anyway. ” It was a lunch that would horrify a dietitian: a bag of Tropical Skittles, a Jones soda, two Little Debbie marshmallow treats, a deep-fried pizza stick and a bottle of sweetened iced tea..” (Jessica Blanchard &Casey McNerthney).

Soda has thought to be an American icon since it was first created. It was only recently that soda has been viewed as being detrimental to our health and only in the last five years has someone attempted to take political action on this matter. But, the soda ban proposed by former New York Mayor Bloomberg, will not be an effective tool against obesity. The soda ban will not be effective because there are key contributors to obesity, such as fast-food, that unhealthy food is less expensive than healthy food, and the way food is advertised. As far as the obesity rates are concerned cheap processed food is a major contributor to obesity.

In New York, they are actually debating on whether or not to ban the tasty drink. A lot of people decide to go in favor of the ban, while others became outraged by the idea of soda being theirs, no more. Despite some people may say it causes health issues, there are still many ways that putting the ban in place, will hurt businesses that make profits from soda, won’t apply to all places, and plus, people are able to make their own decisions whether or not they want to drink soda.
In September 2012, Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York City proposed a law to prohibit the sale of sugary drinks over 16 ounces. Bloomberg argued the regulations were necessary to help curb the increasing obesity rate of New Yorkers and help improve their health. The ban targeted sugar-sweetened drinks such as soda, fruit drinks, smoothies and coffee in portions larger than 16 ounces at restaurants and movie theaters. Supermarkets and convenience stores would have been exempt.
The first reason why Cook County should not keep the soda tax is because, people will still find another way to get the drinks. Since several families purchase these drinks, they will just go to another county. Some families are on the border of two counties, so they will take their money elsewhere, and purchase products at a cheaper county. Because of these reasons, Cook County put a temporary hold on this
