By reading both of these two article about guns control, I can only say the they both the authors make sense in a way, for example we take David Burnett’s, director of public relations for ‘Students for Concealed Carry on Campus (SCCC) article "Students Should Have the Right to Carry Guns on College Campuses.” In his article “Students Should Have the Right to Carry guns on College Campuses”, on the issue of banning guns on college campuses. Burnett’s strongly agrees and he defends his view in support of a student’s right to having concealed firearms with permit. Burnett uses statistics about ‘gun-free’ colleges and how being gun free doesn’t necessarily mean crime free. He uses the crime statistics from two colleges in Colorado to support this.
Gun Carry on University grounds I opposed legalization of carrying firearms on college and university grounds. Bringing guns on campus would only increase the danger. In higher education venerable subject material is taught to students putting their minds not in the best frame of mind. Paul Ortiz, associate professor at UF, says, “...guns on campus will be a distraction to our teaching, research and service missions,” this is true. Students will not be fully engaged in their studies when they are constantly thinking about who will break down next and go on a shooting spree, it would be so easy with the pistol already there.
At the University of Northern Arizona in October of 2015 Steven Jones came to school and shot four students and killed one. He was charged with first degree murder. Now imagine you were a student at that school wouldn't you want a student or teacher to be able to stop the shooter before it got this far? College Students in the United States should be aloud to conceal carry on campus. Concealed weapons on campus would help protect colleges in the U.S. by having armed students and staff on campus.
Imagine its an ordinary day at your college, everything happening in perfect sync and it is normal but all of a sudden you hear a gunshot, then another one and it keeps happening? Imagine this situation and you have nothing to protect yourself with, now imagine it with you having a gun with you to protect yourself from the shooter, wouldn’t that make you feel safe and secure? In 2013, at least 27 shootings occurred in or near a college. Eighteen peoples were casualties of these tragedies and
(Smith, T.N. 2012) The students and staff while on campus who are protecting themselves or another should not be subject to arrest or be punished for a crime. Students need to properly educate the public on the benefits of carrying guns on the campus. By states not allowing guns on campus it is making a target for the shootings. Research says there are more rapes, assaults, and robberies than killings.
Teachers could feel more comfortable in their classrooms if they knew they could protect themselves and their students from violent threats. Schools being a gun free zone are a target for violent
In fact, it is clearly states in the United States Constitution that anyone has the right to bear arms, so why aren’t students that are in college allowed to.. College students are young adults, that are still finding themselves and often put themselves in dangerous situations. Some might say that putting a gun into a college student's hands would be a terrible idea, but wouldn’t that make them feel more responsible and safe, and that alone would most definitely decrease crime rates on campuses. There are lots of reasons that guns should be permitted on college campuses, but there are also a lot of reasons that they shouldn’t be. Most definitely guns come into the wrong hands everyday, and bad things usually happen when they do.
Concealed carry on campus will result in increased crime. Non-supporters say that the more guns in a concentrated place means more crime in that place. Their arguments are interesting and have great
What a lot of people do not take into consideration is that the teachers must go through training and have to be liable to the responsibilities they are taking once they have a concealed carry weapon. Arming teachers could help lower the number of school shootings because the reaction times will be much faster, and it will add a bit of security to the children. Arming teachers will help lower the number of school shootings. If teachers are liable and are fine with carrying concealed weapons in schools, they would be able to respond to the site of the shooting much faster than it would be waiting for the police to arrive. Apart from having faster reaction times to the shooting, arming teachers will also add extra security to many students.
There has been a long standing debate in America regarding open carry. Some people believe that open carry will help protect others from harm. Recently, on June 1, 2015, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed the Campus Carry Law, allowing licensed holders to carry a handgun on college and university campuses, effective next year, August 1, 2016. Gun Control laws need to be controlled, that is indeed true, proven by the 335 public shootings in the country this year alone. Open carry will not be a solution to this growing problem, it may in fact help increase its numbers.
A “ 2000 study of the FBI crime data found states that allow concealed carry have lower murder , assault, and robbery rates” Biyu Chong pg.27 . Mainly, if you think of it from the criminal’s perspective, you would be less likely to rob someone if you thought that they maybe were carrying gun. Furthermore “Detroit Police Chief James Craig agrees saying, that concealed weapons are a deterrent and reduce crime “ Biyu
To prevent future mass shootings, we must strengthen our gun laws to make it as hard as possible for dangerous people to get dangerous weapons.” If gun laws are strengthened, campus shootings might decrease and innocent lives will not be
“A 1985 Department of Justice survey of incarcerated felons reported that 57 percent of the felons polled agreed that "criminals are more worried about meeting an armed victim than they are about running into the police. "(Larry Pratt) Researcher Gary Kleck found that 92 percent of criminal attacks are deterred when a gun is merely shown or, rarely, a warning shot fired. This means that open carry would have the effect of deterring crime in the same way that a thief might choose another restaurant when he sees police eating at his intended target.
Many students in college aged 17 to 23 which is considered to be very young. Allowing those young students guns will lead them astray. The college lifestyle is already defined by alcohol and drug abuse, and if we permit guns to that we should not expect anything good. Lot of times, college students goes through emotional trauma due to homeworks, exams or for financial issues, allowing guns might lead them to commit suicide. One might argue and say that we should only allow guns to the one who are eligible and mature.
In order to nurture a healthy learning environment at America’s schools and universities, it is critical that students as well as faculty feel safe on campus.
