The Army HR NCO is one of the most important jobs in today’s Army. They are responsible for accurate strength reporting, accountability of soldiers and most aspects of The Army’s soldier care programs. The following is a very brief look at why the HR NCO is a professional and what his/her role is in today’s Military landscape. Professions are generally jobs that require years of formal training and real life experience to become an expert in a field (doctor, lawyer, ect.). An occupation is generally learned in a relatively short amount of time in order to maximize efficiency and benefit to the organization. Professions are usually required to use their expertise to effect a desired outcome (a doctor healing a sick person). An occupation is usually required to repeat a procedure rapidly to maximize production (an assembly line worker). Motivation for people to pursue professions tend to be intrinsic (altruism, sense of accomplishment), while motivations for occupations tend to be extrinsic (pay, benefits). An Army professional must strive at all times to be a leader and role model to other soldiers in the Army. An Army professional must maintain a strong work ethic and value system. As an integral part of the Army, the HR professional must always be willing and ready to work on any challenge presented to him/her and in a timely manner. There are times when issues arise that are time sensitive and it is the responsibility of the HR professional to put in the work to get the job done. The author of the book, Dean Hughes, has spent 7 years doing research on World War II and finding information about the war. Dean Hughes has interviewed war veterans, studied newspapers that were written in the time of World War II, and read hundreds of books like, “The Burden of Hitler 's Legacy” by Alfons Hecks to help his understanding of this time period and events. All parents have heard at one time or another “Mommy, (Daddy) please don’t go!” For parents to walk out of the door when they hear this plea from their child is extremely difficult. Children feel more secure when both of their parents are at home. When one of the parents is absent, the children feel a sense of loss and less protected. Why does the American government feel that it has the right to demand that one of the parents leave his/her home to provide protection for American citizens when a child is left at home with limited protection?
This model of professional development must be progressive and with a common career map for all NCOs. Focusing on the five lines of effort that are, military life cycle, education, assignment / experience, credentialing / experience and self-development. These lines of effort are focused on the tasks and missions that are link in establishing the operational and strategic conditions of the future. The development of future NCO will depend on how the leaders of the present will train in an institutional, operational and self-development way to the new generation. Commitment, dedication, and motivation are the three most important values when joining the military. Background checks and months of training are required to ensure that the best is selected to stand strong as one for the best interest of all. Regardless of the requisites, hundreds of individuals devote their time to become part of the US military, unfortunately it is not meant for everyone. Even though the system tries to ensure that only the strong get chosen, it has been proven to be flawed. For example, ex-military personal, like Robert (Bowe) Bergdahl, have left base camps or leaked information to express their feelings towards the military.
Many seem to over emphasize the many privileges gained as an officer and seem to completely overlook the ever more important duties that should be the true motivators. I must ensure to maintain this mindset. I must also remember to put “people first”. (Department of Defense, 1988) This will be a cornerstone in every decision I make.
I don’t really enjoy picking fights, or committing any acts of violence. Truthfully, if I got into any type of conflict, my lanky body would probably give up on me halfway. The Brigade S-1 course was established to prepare Senior Leaders with the competent ability to provide essential HR support in either formation, be it deployment or in Garrison. During a deployment, HR support is the most crucial in regards to personnel accountability given from the S-1 section and casualty operations. Training was received on HR enabling systems through lecture and hands on training. The training gave us in depth details on running queries, viewing requisitions, updating data, view strengths/authorize/projections of enlisted Soldiers and Officers using eMILPO, Datastore, EDAS, and TOPMIS. We received guidance on Excel functions and instructions on how to create Pivot tables.

Among these five characteristics; military expertise, honorable service, trust, esprit de corps, and stewardship of the profession, I believe that military expertise and stewardship of the profession are the two characteristics that make a leader excel in the presence of their peers. ADRP 1 defines military expertise as, “Military expertise is the design, generation, support, and ethical application of land power, primarily in unified land operations, and all supporting capabilities essential to accomplish the mission in defense of the American people”. In order to gain trust from your subordinates for them to follow your guidance, a leader must have military expertise. Without being an expert in your field, subordinates will not trust your guidance provided unto them. ADRP 1 defines Stewardship of the Profession as, “Stewardship is the responsibility of Army professionals to ensure the profession maintains its five essential characteristics now and into the future”.
Throughout my childhood and adolescent years, I always had a dream of joining the military. Though it was a choice, I still did not have any inside information of what it would be like, and the requirements and specifics of the Army. It wasn't until 2005 when I decided to join the United States Army that all my concerns and questions were answered by a recruit; and I was guided through the whole process to enter and prep for the Army. If it was not for the confidences and motivation of my recruiter back in 2005, I might have not made my leap and probably would not be in this uniform today. Becoming a member of the United States Army recruiting team means having a physical and mental toughness in order to perform efficiently.
