It's More Than Just a Sport Have you ever wanted to take something you love to the next level? How could a topic get any hotter? College sports is a rising debate because students are having a tough time with going to practice every day and trying to get their school work done. With that being said, college athletes are pushing for skipping the college process and going directly to the pro level. Now from the school prospective, schools would like for the players to come for four years because it's better competition which leads to more money with television and endorsements. Now the schools and the players can not decide whether or not they can go to the pros directly out of high school. Players need to learn how to find an equal …show more content…
Finding a balance between practice time and school work is tough it really is. Then not to mention that in the off season a true athlete would be putting their work in to become a better player as well as studying to become a better student. It's really tough and take it from someone who had to go through the rough times not managing their time wisely. But you learn from your mistakes and I've learned that school is the main priority but don't let the stress take over your love for the sport. Works cited Baack, E. (n.d.). Naturally, when an athlete’s season is in session the focus on academics can shift and start to deteriorate. If they also are awarded an additional salary, then academics will become the least important factor during their years in
This is an issue because college players don’t know how their future will end up. With a good college program that pays student-athletes for what they do and a good coach who teaches, this can change their future for the better. College programs
Studies say college football and basketball bring in millions while other sports bring in just thousands. By letting these athletes go straight pro that would open up the amount of people who would pay to get in , instead of giving away money to high
The image of a high schooler’s mind almost revolves around money; they think of college to be their next step, but in addition to the added work, is the added practices and how much time they will devote towards the sport - it is a drastic change in hours from high school to college. Pay will attract more of these high school athletes and it will also benefit colleges to raise more money/revenue which is an important piece along the
Also that even the larger colleges in the NCAA won't be able to support all of their athletes financially. What these people must realize is that every athlete can’t make the same amount of money. For the more popular sports they should get more money and for the less popular sports they should get less. That's like the same argument that WNBA players should be paid as much as an NBA player when that can't happen because WNBA players don't generate as much money as the average NBA player. College athletes bring in tons of money for their school.
On college campuses, amateur Division I student-athletes are expected to work much longer hours.” When you are a college athlete you make a lot of sacrifices and don't get to get the full experience that a normal college student may get. This may lead
Sports and school take up almost all of their free time. The extra time they have is used for things like sports conditioning at a gym or studying. “The typical Division I college football player
According to Fox Sports, this has been a law for at least 10 years. If a player gets fresh out of high school and then has to wait for 3 years, then that player is probably going to lose his/her talent with a sport. Also, people say that college is to much money. A basic degree in college is about $200,000. Most people don’t have that kind of money, making them in debt.
The debate over whether or not student-athletes should receive money has been a hot topic recently. College athletes should benefit monetarily for their efforts because of the serious risks involved, the time the athletes put into it, and if the college is making money off these students they should financially benefit from it. Playing college sports is a dream for some kids, but many do not fully comprehend the issues involved in college sports. There is real danger involved with playing any sport, players can get seriously injured. The physical risks involved in sports are extensive.
This notion is supported by Dr. Daniel Gould, who believes that “Children who participate in sports have increased educational aspirations, closer ties to school and increased occupational aspirations in youth” (1). People against the funding of high school sports think that parents and society are placing more emphasis than ever before and, “[P]ressures athletic personnel to deviate on winning from the athlete- centered educational and personal development mission” (Gould 1). However, athletes strive to do better in class. Michael Lorenc, a high school basketball coach believes that “those who seem to have an overwhelming schedule where they’re playing maybe multiple sports, and high academic schedules, they tend to do better than those who don’t do anything extracurricularly” (Gray). Balancing sports and school makes athletes put more effort into keeping up grades while playing the sport they love.
While other students have time for jobs, athletes won’t be able to between school, practice, and
Mental Health: An Issue Among Student-Athletes Stress has been an increasing issue regarding not only college students, but also student-athletes. Imagine the workload of any normal college student. Then imagine on top of academics, playing a sport which occupies the remaining available time within your day and weekend. This is the life of a student-athlete. Many student-athletes are able to handle the schedule and pressure that one faces in the collegiate environment, but some cannot.
Did you know that depending on the sport, students who play sports in college most likely have less than a 2% chance of becoming professional athletes? At middle schools, high schools and colleges across the country, everyone is arguing over whether or not students with failing grades should be allowed to play sports. In my opinion, a good education is so very important for our country’s youth, especially the athletes. Not a lot of kids are good enough to play in the top college sports programs in the country. But even those who are, still have an astonishingly low chance at making the professional leagues.
Athletes who play football or basketball are at a higher risk of career ending injuries. These two sports are the hardest on an athletes body. Only one out of twenty-five college athletes go pro, so why put your body at risk when you don’t receive anything for doing that and your chances of going pro are slim? A lot of these student athletes are stressed out because of schoolwork participating in a college sport. This is just another reason that these athletes deserve to be
College sports are a vital part of colleges ' because: they bring in billions of dollars of revenue, they give athletes a chance for a good future, and they draw in potential students. College sports are important due to the fact that they bring in revenue for universities. Last year at the University of Oregon the athletic department gained roughly $196 million in total revenue for the college. This money can be used to further the education of thousands of students through scholarships, better classroom supplies, and new teachers. The more money colleges are able to make from sporting events allows spending money to put back into the attendees.
