People questioned if the government should abandon the gun-free school zone policy enacted during the Clinton administration. Students for Concealed Carry organized in support of permitting concealed firearms on campus, and in defense, the organization Keep Guns Off Campus assembled. The issue of conceal and carry persists as more mass shootings on school grounds, such as Sandy Hook, occur. Gun opponents lobby against the regulations fearing it will create more violent crimes, but enthusiasts campaign to relax regulation on gun-free zones on colleges. Gun-rights advocates and conservative lawmakers claim it will curb acts of criminality from possible gunmans, but gun-control advocates argue against that conviction. Currently, seventeen states ban the conceal and carry of weapons on campus; twenty four states leave the the decisions in the hands of colleges; eight states have special provisions that allow for the carrying of concealed firearms, and only one state has no jurisdiction over this issue. The threat of mass shooting on college campuses should not be overlooked; however, allowing firearms on campuses endangers the very issue gun advocates are trying to
Twenty-six year old Christopher Harper-Mercer was a student enrolled in the Umpqua Community College. He shot eight students and injured 9 others. Harper committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. It was at 10:38 a.m. that the first call for 911 was made. Students said that the shooting began where the English and writing classes were located.
On the way to the club, shortly after 11 p.m., a white Cadillac pulled up next to Knight and Shakur. The shooter fired 14 shots into Knight’s car, four of which struck
In the documentary, Living for 32, Colin Goddard discusses his experience during a shooting at Virginia Tech. In April of 2007, Seung-Hui Cho, a senior at Virginia Tech murdered 33 people including himself and injured 23 more using a Glock 19 and a P22. This massacre was considered one of the deadliest shootings in U.S. history. The shootings occurred predominately in Norris hall, where Goddard was attending his French class. Goddard was shot four times in his hips and knees and only seven of his classmates survived out of class of 17.
The shots that were fired were too fast to just be one person because the bolt action rifle that was supposedly used couldn’t fire that fast even professional shooters that we tested couldn't do that and the shots that were fired came out in less than 10 seconds. The text says that there was also a police killing the same day too but the two eyewitness descriptions were
It was a couple of days before Graduation Day. Samuel heard some commotion outside the cafeteria. A couple of minutes later, there was a noise of breaking glass and a heavy explosion nearby. Samuel and nearby students went into the kitchen for a place to hide. They waited countless hours waiting while the SWAT team arrived to save the classmates.
(Smith, T.N. 2012) The students and staff while on campus who are protecting themselves or another should not be subject to arrest or be punished for a crime. Students need to properly educate the public on the benefits of carrying guns on the campus. By states not allowing guns on campus it is making a target for the shootings. Research says there are more rapes, assaults, and robberies than killings.
According to Armed Capuses.org, “The overwhelming majority of the 4,400 colleges and universities in the United States prohibit the carrying of firearms on their campuses”. The controversy that surrounds the concealed carry on college campuses vary from negative comments to positive comments. The focus should not be would weapons make people feel uncomfortable like most articles are introducing. The main focus
There has been a long standing debate in America regarding open carry. Some people believe that open carry will help protect others from harm. Recently, on June 1, 2015, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed the Campus Carry Law, allowing licensed holders to carry a handgun on college and university campuses, effective next year, August 1, 2016. Gun Control laws need to be controlled, that is indeed true, proven by the 335 public shootings in the country this year alone. Open carry will not be a solution to this growing problem, it may in fact help increase its numbers.
Many reasons are held accountable for why guns are unacceptable on campus. More guns on campus rises the possibility for unaccredited access to firearms by the wrong people. The chance of the wrong person getting access to a “good guy’s” gun is a larger chance than the gun being used to save student and faculty lives. Guns can be accidentally left anywhere; in purses, jacket pockets, and lawful users can be outdo people outside of campus. Professors and faculty members are not taught to handle firearm combat in a characterized environment.
Mental illness significantly affects many around the world. In fact, about four-hundred and fifty million people worldwide suffer from one or more of the different known mental illnesses. That is one in every four people. Severe mental health issues such as severe anxiety disorder, antisocial personality disorder, schizophrenia, or sensory perception disorder are illnesses which are common among the people responsible for the numerous mass shootings in America. Many believe the possession of firearms in the hands of the mentally ill are the real cause of mass shootings.
To prevent future mass shootings, we must strengthen our gun laws to make it as hard as possible for dangerous people to get dangerous weapons.” If gun laws are strengthened, campus shootings might decrease and innocent lives will not be
The use of and the owning of guns is a very hot and debated topic in society today. For many, this is a life and death debate due to the recent and numerous school shootings. These school shootings have caused an outcry for more gun control, specifically in relation to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. Despite these calls, increased gun control is not the answer. Most gun owners’ use their guns responsibly and for good purposes.
The shooter turned out to be Carl Weiss, the father-in-law of one of Long’s opponents. Weiss was angered because Long had made mean comments, both politically and personally, about his son-in-law. Carl Weiss was killed by a bodyguard immediately after he shot Long. Long died 31 hours later in the hospital.
Problem Solution Paper 95% of people think that america needs stricter gun control laws, yet the amount of shootings in the past years has risen exponentially. Gun violence is a serious problem and the people of the United States have wanted to solve this problem this for a long time. If people feel scared to go to school (which should be a safe learning environment for all children and all ages) that is a problem, and it needs to be solved, or at the very least put in barriers to deal with the mental disabilities and amount of guns associated with this problem. There has been an exponential rise in shootings in America since the 20th century. In the 20th century there were 226 shootings, in the first 18 years of the 21st century there have been 211 shootings.
In order to nurture a healthy learning environment at America’s schools and universities, it is critical that students as well as faculty feel safe on campus. Recent pandemonium of violent crimes on campus has many pro-gun activists suggesting that both the Students and Teachers should be allowed to carry concealed weapons on
