8. Daly, McMinn, and Allan (2014) conclude that physical activity and executive functioning affect each other in a bidirectional relationship. In your own words, explain how one affects the other and vice versa. Executive functioning is the increased level of cognitive processing that is related to the frontal lobe of the brain, which controls and manages important processes that pursuit goals. Executive functioning includes pre-potent response inhibition, the capability to deal flexibly with new situations, selective and sustained attention, and planning. Research has indicated that physical activity has a positive impact on cognitive functioning, especially executive functioning. One previous study found that fitness training has healthy …show more content…
Variable –focused studies are ones that treat each variable as related to another variable, whereas person-focuses studies use mathematical or statistical formulas to examine how the variables combine across individuals. In other words while variable-focused studies study how characteristics are related to each other, person-focused studies assess how these variables group within individuals. Variable-focused studies use multivariate statistics to assess for associations among adversity, outcome, and potential qualities of the individual or the environment or measure the level of risk that may guard individuals from the negative consequences of risk or adversity or function to compensate for it. Person-focused studies compare individuals who have different profiles across or within time on a series of criteria to determine what distinguishes resilient children from other groups of children. Both the variable-focused studies and the person-focused studies have benefits and weaknesses. This leads investigators to include and use both. The variable-focused studies frequently maximize statistical power and are apt to explore specific and different associations between the outcomes and predictors that have propositions for intervention. Yet, the variable-focused studies can fail to seize marked patterns in the lives of real people, missing a sense of the whole and overseeing unique consistencies across dimensions which can reveal who is at greatest risk or needs a specific intervention. The person-focused studies keep variables compiled in naturally occurring patterns and are capable to investigate for common and uncommon patterns in lives through time that results from several processes and limitations of development. However, person- focused studies can

Cecilia Martinez Burr Psy 302-041: Psychological Research Techniques Fall 2016 October 27, 2016 JAR #3 Title U Can Touch This: How Tablets Can Be Used to Study Cognitive Development Introduction The general topic of the article was to examine the methodological gap in developmental research by testing the viability of using touch screen tablets in the study of cognitive development. Previous research on this issue tested the general viability of tablets in developmental cognitive research in children aged 1-4 by utilizing presentations on a web-technology-based tablet using a storybook method and an eye-tracking paradigm. Their results showed that the tablet based method proved more reliability than other methods and proved as a viable
In chapter 7 the main topics that were discussed were thinking, language and intelligence. The aspect of cognition is defined as the mental activities involved in acquiring, retaining and using knowledge. Thinking involves be to manipulate internal, mental representation of information to be able to draw inferences and conclusions. With thinking there are two kinds of mental representation present which are, mental images and concepts. There are also types of concepts that are used with thinking.
After reading this week’s chapters from our textbook, one interesting topic that was discussed in chapter five was classifying instructional objectives. When a teacher wants to design objectives, it is important that they use three domains and they are the cognitive domain, affective domain, and psychomotor domain. The cognitive domain involves mental operations from the lowest level of the simple recall of information to complex, high-level evaluative process (Carjuzaa & Kellough, 2017, pg. 136). The affective domain involves feelings, attitudes, and values and ranges from the lower levels of acquisition to the highest level of internalization and action (Carjuzaa & Kellough, 2017, pg. 136). Psychomotor domain ranges from the simple manipulation
Being active has helped me become better at soccer and hockey. In hockey you need to be in shape; I workout on a daily basis, to keep fit for hockey. When I train for hockey I jog, sprint, skate, and hoist weights. I believe that not only does being active help you physically, it also helps you mentally. When you workout it releases endorphins into your body to make you feel happier and better.
Chapter 6 and 7 covered a lot of concepts regarding mental illness; and out of all the mental ilnesses, depression and stress really stood out. Stress and depression stood out because every single mental ilness underlying problem was depression; and usually triggered by a stressor. Depression and stress play a role in veryday life, and probably have played a greater role in adolescent years. This reminded me of when I was in middle school, and especially high school. Adolescences is one of the hardest time in a persons life, because of all the pressures coming from every direction.
Dreams are exquisite phenomenons that can often be analyzed to help you realize new things in the conscious state. The subject for this study is a 15 year old female who is 5’ 6” and weighs approximately 130 lbs. The dreams being analyzed are mostly connected to her daily life recently. Throughout the study, she thought about her dreams and realized that there were subtle symbols that could be compared to events in her daily life. The following paper shows the analysis of three of her 15 dreams from over the course of the week.
I think that it is important that researchers make sure they aren't making assumption of one group of humans based on another and that they research the specific group of people they need to to make sure that they are fully understanding what they are reporting. I learned that research can be a very complicated procedure and that research have to make sure they aren't false reporting facts that are for all humans when they only studied college students that volunteered for the study. This is important to psychology because it is important to understand researching and what the important factors of certain thing are on the research project. This is also important to humans as a whole because psychological research can help us understand how and why certain groups of people live like they do. It helps us understand that psychological factors can change as you go fro group to group but also how things can be the
There is only one approach in psychology that studies thoughts, feelings and behaviour. The biological approach believes that the way we are is due to our genetics and physiology. They believe that the activity going on our nervous system’s is what affects the way we think, feel and behave (Sammons, 2009). The physiology in the biological approach looks into how the brain functions. The brain is a very complicated machine as such, the brain is what controls our every move, every feeling and every action.

“Cognition may be the most important requirement of activity participation, since the mind regulates body movement as well as other behavioral aspects of participation” (Stumbo & Peterson, 2004, p. 198). There are a moderate amount of rules to remember; such as what each card means, to say “UNO” if you or another player has one card left, and remembering what color or number you need to match with if it is your turn. The complexity of the rules is simple since the action needed is on the card. An example is when a skip card is played the turn skips to the next person or going in the reverse direction if you discarded a reverse card. These cards may be played only if they match the color of the card discarded before hand.
Tiana Freeman Cognitive Psychology Extra Credit Paper Cognitive Psychology is a branch of psychology that focus on our mental life. It is in our everyday lives and it involves several cognitive processes. Because it is so complex, it is difficult to pinpoint exactly how many cognitive processes are used and the order in which the use of them occurred. It helps us with our decision making and problem solving abilities.
As you know, exercise is very important for your physical health. Exercising regularly helps keep your heart healthy, lowers your risk for type 2 diabetes as well as some cancers, and helps you get stronger muscles and bones. This is common knowledge for most people, but what if I told you that exercise has even more benefits that aren’t just physical? Today I will be informing you about the benefits of exercise on your mental health, resiliency and academic performance.
2.1 Assessment What does physical activity mean to you? To me physical activity is doing anything that involves moving the body eg. walking, jumping ,playing sports. I feel that it is very important to be physically active as it helps with your health and stress levels, looks and many more benefits.
Studies have shown that regular physical exercise in middle adulthood helps to prolong cognitive abilities (Guiney & Machado, 2013; Rogers, Meyer, & Mortel, 1990). “Middle-aged adults…who are more physically active…tend to score higher on tests of reasoning, reaction time, and short-term memory (Van Boxtel, Paas, Houx, Adam, Teeken, & Jolles, 1997).” This correlates to my second observation REPORT ON OBSERVED SUBJECT 5 when MC, her other daughter JC, and I went for a walk. MC was noted to have been, “swinging her arms back and forth, putting some “pep” into her step as she walked. ‘It’s good to swing your arms when you walk as you get older,’ she informs me and my sister.”
